Hallods F43 MP4 player packs a 4.3-inch 720p screen, outed in Japan
Looks like the wait for a real HD PMP is finally over: Hallods of Japan has just released their F43 MP4 player featuring a 4.3-inch 1280x720 screen, easily beating other sub-5-inch, 480p screens found on big names like the Archos 5 and Viewsonic's VPD400. Under that sharp screen is 8GB of internal storage and a hot-swappable microSD slot, along with a battery life of about four hours and ten hours for video and music, respectively. Like many PMPs out there the F43 supports videos encoded in MPEG4, FLV, RMVB and DivX-WVGA. Sure, there's the ironic lack of HDMI output, but for ¥16,800 ($188) this is still a pretty good deal. Let's just hope Hallods will send them over to the US soon.

Prediction 1: your comment will fade away
Prediction 2: Baby jesus won't cry
What's the point of having such a high resolution but only 8GB to store the video? ARCHOS 5 have up to 32GB to 500GB to back it up.
They also retail for $500+. This thing is $188.
point is not to store videos on it, but load them on for viewing one or two at a time.
DVD quality video: 700mb
720p: 3-4Gb
1080: 7Gb.
You get teh movie, load it on, watch in bathtub with wifey, then delete.
its just a rebrand of some pmp made in china another company makes one like this

@jay jay: they may look similar but the speakers and ports are different, and not to mention the screen, of course.
The player you linked to has the same screen as the PSP with a layer of touch on top.
It takes MicroSD cards, those are easily and cheaply available in 16GB sizes (I bought one 6 months ago for $40, so I would imagine they are cheaper now). There are now even 32GB MicroSD cards available, though closer to $100, but they too will drop in price. Personally I would much rather have the option of expandable memory so I can buy what I want now, and perhaps expand to more later without having to buy a new device. I really think it is crazy that neither the ZuneHD or iPods of any flavor allow for MicroSD cards. That is the biggest thing preventing me from ever buying one.
You're in the tub, with your wife.
And all you can think think do is watch a movie?
@CJ
Read out loud in my mind in Fry's voice, your comment is the best thing that's happened all morning.
!!!
OMG
!!!
HD-screen-equipped video player that doesn't support HD video playback!!!
"Video: MPEG4, FLV, H.263, AVI, RM, RMVB, Divx-WVGA "
@Shinigami: No, apart from H.263 and DivX, these are all video containers which mean they can be HD as well.
@CJ
What if the movie you are watching is of the last time you were in the tub with your wife?
nice; but why complain about lack of HDMI output? don't you want this thing to watch videos on, rather than plug into a HDTV?
partially.. because if it had hdmi then you could use your hdvt for watching too just copy your movies on a stick memory card plug it in and watch it with your partner and with that price it is considerably cheap.. it would be a quite smooth method
Agreed. This is a portable device not meant for non-mobile applications such as a standalone HPTC media server or Blu-ray device. HDMI output isn't necessary. If someone is buying this toy its probably because they already have dedicated sources for HD for their HDTV.
I always found it stupid the Zune HD cannot natively display HD.
Holy pixel density Batman!
Seriously we need this kind of pixel density on computer monitors. The clarity would be mind blowing.
My eyes are hurting just thinking about that.
Define: overkill.
bring on ATi EyeFinity
@Gad Get:
Sorry?
@ Russ
Not even close. Try again.
I'll give you a hint... "this kind of pixel density on computer monitors."
Oh my itz teh iTablet from deez Applez!
No, Apple will have half the resolution with 10x the price in a pretty black or white shell.
jeez that's pretty awesome. I can't believe they can turn a profit at that price. It's less expensive than an ipod touch with the same internal storage. Now if only they'd put a hard drive in it or have a slot for a hard drive.
oh, I forgot to ask. Is there any word on what kind of interface it uses?
Good idea - a slot for a 2.5" HD would be most xlnt and wouldn't have cost alot, and may not have increased the size of the device much.
I couldn't find anything mentioning that this is a touch PMP or not :/
Damn bar, you just got raised.
Damn, that screen looks fine.
Does it use a touchscreen? (I don't see how it could be anything else)
Is that 8 GB real? I'm just asking cause my phone has "8 GB" on Verizon which is really 0 GB in reality: just a empty MicroSD card slot. It's a hypothetical 8 GB I guess.
Wow, 1280x720 pixels in a 4.3-inch screen, this means 342 ppi. Since 250 ppi is all you need to match photo prints, this is impressive. I could have said overkill, since discerning all the details would require holding the screen very close to the eyes. But still, I would love to see a PDF rendered on such a screen.
The thing about reaching higher pixel density is that it is not going to be of discernible benefit for a small screen like this for most eyes. However, I am still excited to see it, since it means wearable displays as dorky as they may appear are going to finally hitting real HD specs someday soon. Even more importantly if they are able to sell an LCD this dense that cheap, it means 720p LCD projectors are going to become far more common.
hey,
how did you get to the 342 ppi number? just curious...
Thanks,
Sid
around 4.5" w/ 1366*768 mutlitouch LED would the best screen yet to be made :)
And then Levis/Dockers would come up w/ a fashionable side pocket for cell phones...cool :)
I wonder how ppl carry the PSP right now as its huge compared to these devices, I think they had always wished for this side pocket.
@sid1 : √(1280² + 720²) gives you the screen diagonal in pixels (1469). Divide this by the diagonal in inches (4.3) and you get the ppi (342).
It's not touch screen, but does have a tv out connector. It has buttons on the top for navigation. Not bad price tho. And you can just learn to carry around microsd cards.
ug, microsd cards. I wish it would use normal SD, they seem to be cheaper, faster and come out with more storage before microSD. I suppose internal real-estate might have made it the only option though.
...so does this mean my inevitable PSP2 is gonna have a 720p screen in it? Cause when the original PSP launched about 5 years ago in Japan, its 480x272 screen was a relatively big deal and looked phenomenal. It's still a nice looking screen, just doesn't look as good next to the iPod Touch or Zune HD, which have denser screens for their size, or any of these WVGA mobile devices which have easily two or three times as many pixels. In short, a 720p resolution on a screen that's about 4.0" would be very, very nice.
Hallods? Is that a KIRF Harrod's or something?
sod media players, add displaylink drivers and make these diddy secondary monitors for my netbook. Then I'll take three. One for each foot.
Sony Tx00 (mine is T900) cameras have this resolution on a smaller touch screen. Would love to see more devices with this res.
Does anyone know what kind of screen it uses? I was looking seriously into the Gemei HD8800 because it has a new display tech that looks a lot nicer than the typical TN panel. Since it's actually a cheaper method of manufacturing that allows for higher pixel density, it stands to reason this one has a higher res, too.
Of course, the Gemei offers HDMI output at 1080p and is a lot cheaper, so it's a tough decision to make between the two even if the display type was the same. Hmm.
All we need is a screen like this in a psp, dual tegra processors, and another joystiq, then the $250 asking price is justified.
Just ordered one online for 10,115 yen with shipping, thats about $113.
where o.o
links man links~!
jay jay above is right: It's the RAmos T8HD, but I call BS on the 1280x720 unless this Hallods company has contracted with the OEM to add a higher resolution screen. The T8HD will have a standard 800x480 and cost about $90 in China when it gets released.
Gee, this is the first 4.3 screen to break the 1280 barrier which means we can actually see a full screen of all the websites. I really hope a good high end vendor starts buying these LCDs makes them multi-touch capable and packs a snapdragon + tegra + 1GB RAM into it for an android phone/device.
Guys,
I smell the end of days for tablets, MIDs and PMPs if this screen kicks into the phones.
The only tech lagging behind is the all day 3G surfable batteries.
Hope this screen res finds its way into the HD3, Omnia 3 or the next gen iPhone HD along with LED which are due in June/July '10
DOH! I just orderd a HTC HD2 and now there are 4 inch 720p screens.
I would love to see a snapdragon/tegra phone with such a screen.
I see sid1 already tought of an HD3.
