BlackBerry Curve 8520, LG Shine II coming to AT&T
That successor to AT&T's wildly popular LG Shine that we spied back in August has finally popped official today, becoming the Shine II (surprise, surprise). It's a very evolutionary set -- if you squint, you can't see much difference from the original -- but this might be a situation where it's in AT&T's best interest not to mess with success just as long as they don't end up pulling a RAZR over the next several years. It's got a 2 megapixel cam, a mirror-finish 2.2-inch LCD, GPS, 3.6Mbps HSDPA, and microSD expansion to 16GB; look for it on November 22 for $119.99 after rebate on contract. Perhaps more notably, the BlackBerry Curve 8520 has migrated from T-Mobile over to AT&T today with the same EDGE data and optical pad as its cousin; it'll be hitting in the "coming weeks" for $99.99 after rebate. Of course, the Bold 9700 hits on the 22nd for a hundie more, so there'll be some soul searching among AT&T-based BlackBerry lovers over the next few days, we suspect.

So is it me, or are the blackberries far thicker than you'd think they'd be? Considering the droid can pack a slider and a huge screen in, the blackberries just seem so bulky. The original generation Pearl I had was pretty thin, but then again everything broke on it within 6 months.
I'd just expect thinner BBs by now.
I was actually expecting HSDPA or at least some minimal WCDMA support on the curves by now. Lame RIM
Not everyone wnats a superthin phone. I personally think the BB's thickness is perfect. The thinner something is, the easier it is to break!
The Blackberry Pearl is about as thick as modern BB get at 15mm, with the Pearl Flip being the only exception.
The Tour, Storm and Droid are the same thickness.
Is it just me or is this one of the least interesting phone posts I've seen on the main site?
It is in fact one of the most uninteresting posts.
I almost forgot featurephones even existed...
And this article reminded me that I don't even care about them anymore. I'd never turn back.
Still no Android phones AT&T? Might be time for me to move on if that's the case.
I'm in the same situation. I'm ready to renew my AT&T contract but I don't like any of their phones offered except for the iPhone. I already carry an iPhone for work so I'm really interested in an Android phone. If they don't offer one by the end of the year I'll switch (probably to Verizon for the droid).
WHY ATT! While the rest of US telecom companines are re-inventing themselves you continue to release.... a slider.... REALLY ATT , REALLY!
Are we doing carrier fanboyism now...wow.
SMH
What will the kids think of next.
I think this post should've been relegated to the Engadget Mobile site. That's what it's there for.
Seriously. Must be a slow news day. And why in the hell does the Shine cost more than the BB?
maybe its me but im tired of the reuse of the name CURVE...
oh what curve do you have? um, not the first one, not the last one, the middle one...
LOL
If you have a problem with that.
Don't even bother with Apple.
The hundie is back!
Why is it this RIM Blackberry device has EDGE only.....but yet this silly flashy slider has 3.6mbps HSDPA...lol? WTF RIM??
Because this Curve is a low end handset. Not meant to have all the excitement of the others.
Disclaimer: I hate my (2nd) iPhone 3g. At 15 months old the buttons randomly trigger. I've not dropped it in over 8 months. It wasn't a bad drop. They just don't last.
But seriously....for $99 why would ANYONE not get the iPhone if you're on AT&T already??? $119 on contract for a feature phone on the same network? Are they for serious? I wouldn't even recommend the iPhone (x10 FTW) but for that price it just makes sense.
Why not get the iPhone? One reason... your employer buys your phone and won't allow the iPhone on its Exchange server. Otherwise I would have had an iPhone ages ago! ;)
Yeah the Android phone is going to be where it's at.

The original Shine was atrocious. I returned that phone within an hour. Texting on it was painful; the buttons took so long to register, and sometimes took multiple presses. Not sure how RIM keeps releasing phones without 3G, especially for anything more than $25.
$99 is a lot to be spending on an EDGE device. At least it has WiFi, which is more than I can say for my old Curve 8310.
Really... this is all At&t has new to offer...
$99 bucks doesn't seem so absurd anymore. AT&T's website currently lists the Curve 8320 for $149 after $100 rebate. Now that is truly absurd. (especially when you can pick up a refurbished Curve 8900 for $49!)
What is with the hate? That Curve is going to sell a hell of a lot and so will this Shine 2. I know plenty of people with the shine, not everybody needs a smartphone.
I would like to see some Android phones hit at&t as well, but realistically not every phone needs to be a higher end smartphone.
My brother in law would love that Curve 8520, he is a lawyer that uses the hell out of his 8310 but would never get the Bold.
I got the curve 8520 about a week ago with optus here in Australia. I got it on prepaid for $399 and I got 1 year free internet with it. Overall I love the phone, only thing is the internet is of course a bit slow because it's not 3g.
3 reasons the last shine sucked: would shut off randomly while closed with the battery full (even plugged in) i went thru 3 shines; plagued with the same issue. i flipped my shit when the alarm didnt turn on and i was late for work the first time this happened to me. bluetooth started to crap out after a while on the three phones as well. finally there was no option to store texts to the memory card, and the max amount of texts was a hundred (or maybe even less) so i had to delete texts constantly. my dad doesnt text or use bluetooth, but his lg flip phone works fine so this problem seemed relegated to the shine.
I like how AT&T is keeping expectations low by posting "EDGE" in the shot for the BlackBerry.
why does verizons version get 3g and at&t's doesnt? not cool
