Okay, pretend to be surprised if you want, but Facebook and PlayStation 3 are coming together, sort of. We saw the tiniest bit of teaser last week via leaked photo, and now we've got details and a release date. Users will have the option of sending status updates for PSN purchases and Trophies whenever the user syncs up the account to the PlayStation servers, and developers can now integrate automatic updates when certain game events occur, similar to what we saw with the recent Uncharted sequel. Unfortunately, some of the very basic functions you'd come to expect from Facebook apps, such as writing your own status updates, aren't there yet. Hopefully we'll be seeing more integration sooner rather than later, as the company's noting this is just the beginning of the integration with the social network. Integration hits with firmware 3.10, which as we heard from a previous Sony Poland leak is this Thursday, just one day after Xbox Live's Facebook integration debuts (how very convenient, indeed). Also in the update? New photo navigation and PSN gamer card options. Video after the break.
Facebook integration is a terrible feature, you have always been able to view facebook on the mediocre built in web browser. At least they fixed the friends list but what PS3 needs is Cross Game VOICE Chat.
@ blitzkrieg: you can probably block updates from the PSN like you can from applications. My feed is significantly clearer now I've hidded Farmville and the like ;)
Just thought I'd clarify, I know hidded isn't a word (damn alcohol making my hands do things I don't want them to do...no, stay away from there *slaps*). Sorry for filling up your inbox 7egend
PS3 Slim for the first time i think IMHO is a better choice than the 360 "Money Wise", and this is comming for a two Xbox owner. I have an Arcade & Special Edition Halo 3 Pro. Why, simply almost all my friends have xbox and second Xbox Live.
Stop the same old Shi#$%, I give you useless wireless is overpriced is ok, I don't need it, is convenient but not necessary for a multiplayer gamer, HDD is way, way, way overpriced but Xbox Live c'mon guys. PSN is free, so is Xbox Live. Just do the math $49.99 / 365 days = 0.14 cents every day for me this is free for a way better service. I must admit Microsoft is too slow right now and Sony is closing the gap in terms of PSN features.
PS: You could find Xbox Live membership online as low as 29.99 for 12 months + 1 that means. $29.99 / 395 days = .075 cents daily.
Yeah, as someone who has been kind of back and forth with the whole Xbox 360 or PS3 thing for 2009 Christmas present, this is a bit of a downer as I expected Sony to directly put out some competition for the November Dashboard update for Xbox 360. I guess they decided they could just play catch up? Well as far as my decision goes, I really wanted Blu-ray as I have used my gaming consoles as my movie player for years and thought that a PS3 would be a great way to jump into Blu-ray. However, the fact that virtually all of my friends are on Xbox LIVE rather than PSN, as well as the fact that 1080p Zune Video downloads and Netflix will be available for Xbox, have kind of turned my decision around and I think I may finally be ready to choose. It would (will??) be very different using an Xbox 360 after becoming accustomed to the PlayStation way of things with my PS2 and PS1 before that, though. Oh well! It may be the best time ever to jump in on the PS3 but, as someone who is just now delving into this generation of consoles, it will probably be the Xbox 360 for me.
You can already do Facebook and Twitter updates on the PS3. What kind of additional competition were you looking for?
Pick the machine you want, but if you select your machine based upon Netflix streaming, you're making a big mistake. The material via Netflix presented on either platform is neither awesome in scope or quality. And you can stream it to your PC for free.
All of your friends may be on XBOX Live, but PSN is free, and Blu-Ray to boot. They both do Netflix, and the disc is not that inconvenient.
All things considered, why would you want to pay a fee for not seeing your friends when you can do it for free? That was the decision maker for me. If I'm going to be a reclusive gamer (nerd), then I'm going to do it on the cheap. Paying for it just seems kind of...sad.
How is it sad? People pay more for worse things. (Open to interpretation)
And while It may be free, if there's no one to play online with then its pointless. All of my friends are on Live as well and My online experience on the PS3 is nothing compared to my 360. In the end, you get what you pay for. Plus, its $50 PER YEAR. Not anything to really cry about.
And the Blu-Ray argument is quickly fading away. I can get a Blu-Ray player for less than $199 now and the prices will only continue to fall as they replace DVDs or fade away all together in favor streaming. By this time next year, I would be surprised if you couldn't find one for around $100 or less.

go for the xbox360, then resell it later on for a ps3 after realising that xbox live gold was only free for the first few month, your friends are assholes on xboxlive, strangers are assholes on xboxlive, the fan seems to be spinning rather loudly, netflix seems to have a rather limited movie collection, you could play nearly all of the xbox exclusives if you had a real computer, after installing every game on your hard drive realise that a 120 gig can only hold less than 20 games, and a hard drive upgrade is 10times more expensive per gigabyte than your desktop or roughly equal to the cost of an ssd per gigabyte...
then again i'm a console gamer who recently discovered the joys of computer gaming after seeing how cheap it is to put a box together that can play cod4, and the only reason i sold my 360 was because i dread the day i have to call support and tell them i have the dreaded rrod or even worse e74... and my ps3 is gathering dust simply because i'm enjoying modern warfare2 on the pc a little too much
Ah good choice, the PS3 is good, don't get me wrong but it's features are just not that useful, to me anyways,m as i find myself only using it to watch movies (blu-ray and downloaded :D) Don't pay mind to that dude "jake Johnson" who's talking about paying for XBL being sad, what i find sad is the fact that he can actually complain about not being able to put out the £4.99 (a trip to subway for me) a month :(... That said, my main qualms with psn is the fact that i can't chat with the friends i've got on there while playing a game (i haven't switched on my ps3 in a month so tell me if it's changed now) if they aren't playing that same game too, unlike my 360 where i can join parties on the fly n chat away making it like a gaming skype. And as most of my friends are gamers as well, i can save credit :D.
"However, the fact that virtually all of my friends are on Xbox LIVE rather than PSN,"
Funny Cody was downranked when he spoke the truth, for this is absolutely true. Uncharted 2 *almost* pushed me over the edge to getting a new PS3 slim, but I'm not going to spend $300 for one game. Bluray rips are handled by my Windows 7 Media Center with MediaBrowser and Arcsoft TMT so I don't have to handle physical discs one by one to the PS3 and then wait 2 minutes for the menu to load.
Why has nobody bothered to mention games in response to Cody yet? You all are talking about features that should be used 25% of the time at best. I just got the netflix trial to try streaming and it's OK but there aren't enough movies to keep me on board and yeah the disc is not that inconvenient.
I have however been consumed by exclusive games at the moment since there was uncharted 2, ratchet and clank, and now Demon's Souls. Combine that with multi platform titles such as Moder Warfare 2, Borderlands, Tekken 6, etc and as a gamer there's definitely more than you can chew.
If you're so interested in keeping up with friends and streaming movies might I suggest a computer with AIM/Skype and a web browser(Which the PS3 has).

Come on Sony! Forget facebook, give me some features I actually care about. I could care less about these social networking sites being ony my ps3. Please dont force this firmware on us.
Not interesting. All I want for Facebook integration is to sync my Facebook friends with the PS3 network and see who else is on PSN. No one wants to see what demo I downloaded.
gotta say being an iphone user and att customer since cingular im glad to see them poking fun at att i hope this start a fire under their butts and get better 3g coverage

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Great, what did Sony break in the firmware this time :(
Please don't be mandatory.
Facebook integration is a terrible feature, you have always been able to view facebook on the mediocre built in web browser. At least they fixed the friends list but what PS3 needs is Cross Game VOICE Chat.
Fantastic. Now my live feed, which is already an abomination as it is, will get even more cluttered.

Not excited.
Unless they are adding more codecs...
*Cough* .mkv *Cough*
@G33K3D uP: mkv is a container, not a codec. Would be a most welcome addition though
Great! Just wanted I didn't care for...
Forget facebook, how about giving us the ability to change our PSN ID just like you can do with steam.
My face needs no book.
But it does need some dental work.
It actually looks like someone already hit you upside the face with a book.
Sony still busy trying to put lipstick on a pig I see. Do yourself a favor and scrap the XMB and start from scratch!
I wish I can "-1" you until your message is invisible.
@high
where can i get some of the stuff you're smoking?
i own an xbox but i still respect the XMB as an easy to use (for me) interface.
but really... hook me up with your dealer
@High
I completely disagree with you. I myself own a 360, but I find the XMB really slick. Call me crazy, but I think it's a little bit classier.
@Jake Johnson

"Sony still busy trying to put lipstick on a pig I see."
Yeah, but that pig is made of things like bacon and hot dogs and honey-roasted ham. And you can always scrape the lipstick off if you don't want it.
Here piggy, piggy!
@Carlos: So you won't mind sending us all a check for $50 every year then? I mean, it's free right?

tbh not that great an update. hope it aint mandatory.
I love the friends list now. Glad only 1 box pops up. Glad theres also some opacity to it and color! Thanks Sony!

that should be possible since the 360 does it.
Yeah, that would add value to be able to game with your Facebbok friends without have to search for them.
gotta say being an iphone user and att customer since cingular im glad to see them poking fun at att i hope this start a fire under their butts and get better 3g coverage
it seems this is the wrong article
That is very perceptive of you. +1 for knowing your mistake, -1 for being lost.
Well, I guess he broke even.
lol. can't blame that one on the comment system.
It's going to update my status every time I get a trophy? That is ridiculous. I got all the trophies in Uncharted 2 in around five days, so it would've updated my status 48 times?
Just turn it off, and turn it back on after you finish and it will sync them up. Atleast that is the way I understand it.
Fantasti.cc much?
okay, ignore this. saw the video and it posts a single message of the trophies you get when you sync. awesome.
Its nit as annoying as hearing about your friends getting a wild turkey in Farmville, or any other mundane stupid accomplishment in any of those Facebook games.
@Monkey Fetish
They have Wild Turkey in Farmville? That must explain why it's so popular!
Am I the only one who doesn't want Social Networking crap on my consoles?
Play stats are fine. But keep facebook etc off please.
That's why it's an option. No one is forcing you to use it. If you never turn it on, you never have to worry about it.
And -1 for your double post fail.
