Okay, pretend to be surprised if you want, but Facebook and PlayStation 3 are coming together, sort of. We saw the tiniest bit of teaser last week via leaked photo, and now we've got details and a release date. Users will have the option of sending status updates for PSN purchases and Trophies whenever the user syncs up the account to the PlayStation servers, and developers can now integrate automatic updates when certain game events occur, similar to what we saw with the recent Uncharted sequel. Unfortunately, some of the very basic functions you'd come to expect from Facebook apps, such as writing your own status updates, aren't there yet. Hopefully we'll be seeing more integration sooner rather than later, as the company's noting this is just the beginning of the integration with the social network. Integration hits with firmware 3.10, which as we heard from a previous Sony Poland leak is this Thursday, just one day after Xbox Live's Facebook integration debuts (how very convenient, indeed). Also in the update? New photo navigation and PSN gamer card options. Video after the break.
I use PS3, I use Facebook, but I don't see why I'd use them both together. On my phone Facebook is great, otherwise, while I realize "social networking" is a big buzz word right now, I don't see how gaming and Facebook fit together.
This probably explains why the Facebook app for Android (and I guess for WebOS, too) sucks a leaky taint. They're busy making another crappy app for PS3.
Another thing I don't need in a gaming console. (I realize that some people do indeed like Facebook and for some reason want integration of it and everything in their lives.)
anything else being updated with this update? doing any kind of web browsing or facebooking with a controller is pointeless, both on a 360 or a ps3 (i have both, don't use either ever)
Why do you need Windows network shares on your PS3? The PS3 can only play so many formats. Using a good DLNA server, like PS3 Media Server, is by far better. It will automatically convert almost any file to something that will play on the PS3. It can even handle MKV with softsubs, the PS3 cannot do this by itself.
developing is one part, they have to test the new firmware with every - single - game made for the ps3 both disc and psn titles. Not only games but they have to test every video format, every picture format, and every music format that the ps3 supports. So actually that was pretty quick.
You can listen to pandora while you play if you do it right. Just take the digital out from PS3 and run it to digital in on a computer. You can get all the sound you want from your comp.
People give their facebook details to the sony corporation now? I guess there's no hope for the world, people are just too stupid - and it's getting worse.
First this crap on xbox, now on my ps3 too. And yea i don't have to activate it but i don't even want this crap anywhere near me, let alone taking up space on my hard drives. AND i don't care if it only uses 1kb of space, that's 1kb too much to waste on this crap.
I have a question for all Playstation 3 users in this forum, I still haven't upgraded to version 3.0 and still using the last 2.xx version. Should I upgrade to 3.0 I didn't seem to like the way it looked at all, and are there any other benefits to 3.0 other than the online gaming of course which I miss because of the 2.xx version I'm still running.
Be careful. The 3.0 and 3.0.1 upgrades fried a lot of hardware. The BluRay players started having problems due to overheating. Check out the link to see what models have been affected by this. I hope the new firmware fixes these issues, but I doubt it since Sony is denying this is even happening.
I own the xbox 360 and what i think is ridiculous is that you have to pay to be able to use fb and twitter, they should be available with the silver membership.
All I know is when my Facebook friends start getting inundated with status updates about my PS3 trophies, I will suddenly find myself without friends on Facebook.
having a lot of features on a console is interesting but not necessarily a must. Nowadays almost everyone have a computer with Internet access.
If SONY thinks it's good to add Facebook, twitter or whatever to the console, mostly like i've seen from that video - to publish some games related stats & status well so good for those wanting this, if i don't want, will disable the option so no harm all win!
to those that keep comparing consoles - well it's funny reading your posts ... really believe me! ;)
just to express my opinions on why i chose a PS3 & a PC for gaming (not that the Xbox360 is bad)
1 - The net in my country isn't great for online gaming - can't pay for something i can barely use 2 - I needed also a Blu-ray (no don't compare to online streaming, else you'd show you don't know what the difference about the bitrate vs quality is & i'm a perfectionist for multimedia content) 3 - I have a PC, that has shared games with the Xbox ;) 4 - I'm mostly after Sacred, some multi like NFS series, COD series, Diablo series (waiting impatiently for Diablo III) (so i'm a PC-ist), my preferred console games would be any good car racing, platform games & some retro-gaming, but to exclusive i'm really after God of War & Team ICO games. So the choice was obvious! 5 - I think the PC is the best, yet expensive gaming machine & having a PS3 just make it the best combo for all type of gaming.
Now to those who have an Xbox360, well happy for you, still your best combo would always be to possess both or a WII as secondary console, but certainly not the PC unless you are a RTS fan plus Xbox Exclusive (true ones not shared!)
this article is about Facebook on PS3, so sorry if i went to the same trend as others about another unnecessary console war.
Facebook on PS3 is not necessary for me, i don't have an account but if someday i do, would be happy to update my trophies & games stats on it, as long as i can stop it.
Cross-game chat will to come to PS3, yet i don't feel like i need to speak to someone playing KZ2 while i'm Co-opping in UC2, oh i forgot if i succeed in doing in with my lame connexion ;) .. still that's just me!
i LOLed @ the friend's bar colour option .. so if you are in a moody pinky day ... when i see u only i'll know ha!
some people here did say good things to wish about a FW update.
I want MKV support I want subtitle support I want faster gameplay I want less install I want external big capacity disk support for backup & saving files I want external (yet proprietary) install for otheros (on older systems) or games I want SSD support I want all usb devices support (an xfi USB audio device, an external wireless N wifi device, USB TV or any gadgets )
Well take your time SONY, but if you bring all these, then the PS3 will be the beast, now awake & ready to rumble ;)
" I want MKV support - Use MKV2VOB I want subtitle support - why?! I want faster gameplay - its pretty fast... game designers need to make less loading screens I want less install - get a bigger harddrive - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148374&cm_re=500_GB_laptop_sata-_-22-148-374-_-Product I want external big capacity disk support for backup & saving files - See above I want external (yet proprietary) install for otheros (on older systems) or games - I want SSD support - this should work as it would just be a Disk. I want all usb devices support (an xfi USB audio device, an external wireless N wifi device, USB TV or any gadgets ) - My diNovo keyboard works fine on the ps3, Strangly enough ive used my xbox controller in the usb slot (bought the converter form lik-sang before they were taken off the net). "
i can see your views, still sorry for maybe i wasn't clear enough.
- I want direct MKV support, without streaming or re-encoding - I want subtitle support for some Video Karaoke i have in my native language - i was wrong about faster gameplay ... the beast is just A.W.E.S.O.M.E, mea culpa ;)
- Some games doesn't require installation at all, so even if it speeds up loading, i would prefer having less installation files on it. I want a bigger hard-disk, for sure will do so! - have anyone tried a big 'EXTERNAL' drive formatted in NTFS & could access it on the PS3, please help me to do so! - SDD should work, but not officially supported for now! - I want support for more specific USB devices like wifi dongle (wireless-n) for i have no wifi built-in in my PS3, maybe some other devices.. My IBM USB keyboard works too, even some cheap mouse. I would really like to see game support for such devices.
Most of all i would like support for my part of the world - that will not be fixed by a FW update, but an integration on PSN itself!
The one thing I wish that Face book would do is that, instead of one solid list of bullshit listings maybe break it down into Applications, and Friends, and events listings.
I would like to see Facebook in three separate columns and have the ability to turn on/off those columns.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Am I the only one who doesn't want Social Networking crap on my consoles?
Play stats are fine. But keep facebook etc off please.
Or you could just not activate it at all. That should work.
I use PS3, I use Facebook, but I don't see why I'd use them both together. On my phone Facebook is great, otherwise, while I realize "social networking" is a big buzz word right now, I don't see how gaming and Facebook fit together.
I can imagine my facebook homepage: "Sony and Facebook are now in a relationship".
No word yet on if you'll need the Facebook CD in the tray for it to work.
Or if it will only work if you pay Sony an additional $50 a year. :/ Oh wait...
That doesnt even make sense.
Where's the Thursday date coming from? Did I just miss it when I read the US and EU Sony blog posts?
I been trying to find that out too. Engadget is the only one with this Thursday thing. I'm starting to think they just pulled a date out their a**.
You two just read it wrong. Poland PSN said it was coming on Thursday which they state quite clearly.

It looks like the completely fading text has been fixed, im sooo happy!!!
Look at 0:20 and 3:10. If it's not completely fading away, it's fading to the point of being unreadable.
anything else being updated with this update? doing any kind of web browsing or facebooking with a controller is pointeless, both on a 360 or a ps3 (i have both, don't use either ever)
When do you think PS3 will be able to access windows network shares? This is what I am waiting for..

I wonder if Nintendo will ever add Facebook to the Wii Photo Channel.
It's probably unlikely, but not totally out of the realm of possibilities since Nintendo did update the DSi Photo Channel with Facebook integration.
Sony, that's great and all, but you'd better be bringing this to the PSP as well.
Finally Sony is trying to get it together there is one major update they need now is cross chat and they need to make in game music mandatory
So it took Sony 4 months to develop these two features? Do they have only one developer there? SAD.
developing is one part, they have to test the new firmware with every - single - game made for the ps3 both disc and psn titles. Not only games but they have to test every video format, every picture format, and every music format that the ps3 supports. So actually that was pretty quick.
Want to impress me, Sony? Bring in uTorrent integration. THAT would be epic. Or atleast let me listen to Pandora while I play my games.
You can listen to pandora while you play if you do it right. Just take the digital out from PS3 and run it to digital in on a computer. You can get all the sound you want from your comp.
sony actually paying people to do these crap firmware updates?
I might have to sell my PS3...
...or not use the feature.
I wonder if this firmware will fix the blu-ray drive that the last firmware broke.
Having your PS3 report your achievements to your facebook = GUARANTEED to get you laid when girls see them.
/sarc
voice chat = 600 lb gorilla in the room......
I always thought he was 800lb? Maybe he's been in the room so long, he's starving to death?

well they changed the browser it looks like... i hope they make it stop crashing all the damn time...
Useless
All I know is when my Facebook friends start getting inundated with status updates about my PS3 trophies, I will suddenly find myself without friends on Facebook.
in France it will be out thursday as well...
"Unfortunately, some of the very basic functions you'd come to expect from Facebook apps, such as writing your own status updates, aren't there yet."
Erm... Couldn't you just go to Facebook on the browser? I really don't see a need to clutter up the UI unnecessarily.
Wow maybe when twitter is irrelevant we could get that integrated also, in disc form probably.
hello ...
