Google announcing Chrome OS launch plans this Thursday
It's looking increasingly unlikely that Google's Chrome OS is really launching this week (not that we were really that convinced anyway). What is true, however, is that the company is hosting an event later this week at its Mountain View, CA headquarters to showcase its progress, provide an overview of the platform, and give information on its "launch plans for next year." Excited? Us, too.

Will be cool to see which computer manufacturers support this.
I was just thinking that myself, I mean, desktop-wise I fail to see it going anywhere, but if they make it nice, I could see it work on Netbooks, but the average consumer is just going to think it's trouble and opt for a windows machine in my opinion, Sort of like what happened with linux being sold alongside xp on netbooks.
As per my thinking if its using Linux as base , then it can run all the system they are capable of running Linux. But i prefer wait and see what they got for us.
Which netbook vendor *wouldn't* be interested in a freebie cloud-based OS w/ Google backing?
But the 20-cent query of the day is: How well will a cloud-based OS fare?
Since netbooks are built mainly with the web browser in mind, one'd think that Chromie would do well, especially if it's cheap (cloud-based==no hard drive), light, fast boot, and lasts for a full day. It'd be interesting if and how it can move up the foodchain to regular laptops and desktops.
Yep, Chrome OS can have a chance only if Google can build an industry wide alliance with hardware manufacturers just like the Open Handset Alliance for its Android OS. Support of just a few manufacturers will not help much.
Even then, it will have to be bundled with a Windows version with an ability to switch between the two OS.
I TRULY CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS SCRUMPTIOUS OS TO ENTER MY LITTLE BELLY
Haha I was going to post about hardware compatibility. Then I saw the first post was about that... and then I saw a whole slew of responses saying the same thing!
Anyhow, FWIW, I'm on the same page. I really hope there is very good hardware compatibility. Specifically, my brother is getting one of the AMD netbooks for xmas. The CPU on it is significantly faster than the Atom in all windows benchmarks, but the linux hardware compatibility isn't great. Hopefully this will a) have better compatibility and b) they merge their updated changes back into other linux packages so the other distros can benefit.
So it will probably be free, but at the expense of having Google track every move you make on your computer.
I think calling it Metroid OS would be more fitting.
i knew that logo looked like something other than a Pokeball! good call!
why not call it Chromeos? combining both Chrome and OS, duh!
For realz, The logo matches and "Metroid" would perfectly compliment "Android". Maybe they should buy the rights from Nintendo to use the trademark?

Haha! It DOES look like Metroid morph ball.
"Metroid OS" sounds hot, though.
OMG IT DOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Agreed.
Check this out it's the inspiration for the chrome logo

Chromeo is already a name of a band, so I don't think the lawyers will like Chromeos.
I installed Google Chrome web browser, used it five minutes, uninstalled it.
I picked up a Google Android phone at a Tmobile store, saw how sluggish and "1.0-ish" it felt, never looked at Android again.
Google O/S: Let's hope the third time's a charm, eh?
You have too much negative thoughts about Google products... I don't think it will impress you...
I am looking forward Chrome OS
i have used every browser i can find and the chrome is the one for me
What's not to like about Google Chrome? It's fast, and lightweight in comparison to Firefox. I'm waiting for the add-on scene to take off till I switch browsers.
I haven't had the luxury of using an Android phone (not many good ones here in Canada, personally I'm waiting on the Droid), but most people seem to like the OS. Which phone did you test Android on?
In my opinion, the release of Chrome OS can only be beneficial. Competition does, after all, only results in constant innovation and improvement.
Things change, you know. Android isn't going to stay the same forever: never to look at it again because you found version 1.0 sluggish doesn't strike me as very sensible.
What I don't like about Chrome browser is when you switch to a tab it takes a second for the content to show. Not sure if it still does that but it was a killer for me when I tried it on release.
im running the dev channel version and tab switching is instantaneous. content is there right away.
Chrome is the fastest and most lightweight browser out there. Also Android has dramatically increased in speed and hardware has changed fast. 5 Star, you just have something stuck up your butt.
Depending on when you played with an android phone, there's a good chance that it felt "1.0-ish" because it was running v1.0.
People keep comparing iPhone and Andoid phones without seeming to take into account the fact that iPhone has more than 2 years on Android. Give it two more years and Android will overtake iPhone in almost every aspect. That's my magical prediction.
What's with the exclamation mark in the yellow part of the google chrome symbol?
Yeah, what's up with that? It should be a question mark!
I know right? That's already taken by Crunch Bang Linux !# one of my favorite light weight distros btw.
and also the glare on the top left between the red and green sorta looks like an inverted apple logo. where did they come up with that ball?
Cannot wait!
*drool*
Has anyone noticed the Chrome OS logo is almost the exact same color scheme as the Windows logo? The Chrome logo looks way more modern though. I wonder if that was intentional...
The Chrome logo reminds me of the old electronic game Simon
I think its less the colors of microsoft and more the colors Google has used since 1998.
Yall are idiots. The Windows logo has colors from the classic Apple logo. Apple is the always the inventor of everything.
i can has chrome OS?
I'm sorry Jotan but not until your English grade rises above an F.
I hope it turns out to be more than the Chrome browser embedded into a minimalistic Linux distro...
Pass. Used Chrome, it sucked. Windows 7 is working just fine thank you.
You probably used the fan based gOS which is not Chrome OS. You mentioned Windows 7 so I'm assuming your comparing Chrom OS to Windows 7 and not Chrome the browser.
Looking forward to it, maybe it is the next Android for netbooks (or even laptops).
I really hope there's another hour-long video demo of all Chrome OS's new features! And I really hope we don't get to see it again for months afterward, just like Wave!
I don't mind setting aside a 10GB partition to install it and play around with it at all. If it is as useful as 90% of Google's other services, it will be a winner.
CRUNCHPAD PLZ
Hear that microsoft and apple? Game is about to be changed big time. Google has a ton of services, android is excellent they have the money and development skills to take over.
OMG 2010 is gonna be the best year of all time! of ALL TIME. I can't wait to see all the new tech all this competition is going to bring. :) I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about it.
Sucks more to be apple because they might chip some of their 10% market
Does teh Goog ever fail? I think not.
Knol, dodgeball, answers, video (not youtube), Lively...
Most successful Google products are actually aquistions plugged into El Goog's enormous user base.
Yeah, they have a few of their own... but a lot of it was bought. You can see a list of all the companies Google has acquired here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_acquisitions_by_Google
Although, I believe Google could make it themselves if they wanted, but instead of hiring a new team to develop it from scratch, why not just buy a company and hire their developers? Then that company isn't completely screwed because Google offered the same service for free.
