After a protracted "let's be absolutely certain we're in the clear" period, T-Mobile has gone ahead and lifted its self-imposed moratorium on Sidekick sales following that little
meltdown you may have heard about. Oh, and there's a bonus, too: they're a little cheaper this time around. The Sidekick 2008 has dropped to $49.99 on contract while the top-of-the-line LX 2009 has shed $25 down to $149.99 on contract, so if you were looking for an excuse to live dangerously with your precious address book, this might be as good of a reason as any. Then again, what are the odds of lightning striking twice?
mmmmm........naw
While I'm a fan of the Sidekick series. I have to say it's either go big or go home time for Danger next time around (if there is a next time). The prices should be FREE (w/ contract of course) & $99.99 for the LX '09 ...

Good luck Sidekick ... You're like Apophis from Stargate SG-1. Just when you think he's dead, you wake up in a hospital bed with his glowin' gay eyes shinin' in your face.
If I was in the market, I personally wouldn't be afraid to buy a sidekick... I think the odds of that kind of meltdown happening again are pretty small
I'm glad to see the Sidekick being sold again. I bought the first three SK's, and will always have a soft spot in my heart for them. While they were so-so phones, I loved them for the photos that they took. I even did some gallery shows ("Cell Outs and Phonies") and published some shots taken with my phone in PDN. They produced some cool, Holga-like images, and was sad to hear that the whole platform might be scrapped. Here's a link to some photos on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hiptopia/sets/59247/
"the odds of lightning striking twice?"
The odds are very good considering MS is aggressively cutting their workforce
to show decent profit. This was the reason the problem occurs in the first place.
The Hitachi consulting team that was running the project screwed up bigtime.
You're insane. This is probably the safest "cloud" device out there. Once you screw up that badly once, you MAKE SURE it doesn't happen again. They are probably twice as vigilant as any other company out there regarding that sort of thing now.
It took 8 years for this to happen one time, I dont think it will be happening anytime soon
I want to respond to some incorrect information that has been posted on this blog. Randomness posted that Hitachi Consulting was involved with the Sidekick issue. I am a Vice President at Hitachi Consulting and can assure you that my company was not involved in this issue and that we have never been engaged to perform any services for the Danger subsidiary of Microsoft.
Regards,
Ian Smith
Vice President Hitachi Consulting
Who can blame them for being cautious?
You can already see here in the comments that the meme-squad has been scrambled and will assure memery whenever T-Mo is brought up in the future, so they HAVE to watch their ass now.
Dude... next time use protection.
@Mmmmm...Donuts,
You meant next time his parents should use protection, right?
So, just so we know before we get (or not) one of this... Did they really got all, if not most, of their consumer's data back from oblivion or not?
Since perception is important, average consumers will not be drawn to this unless they issue a full formal explanation on what happened, how did they tried to solve it, how did they fail the first time, and how is that not going to be an issue in the future.

I have been a long time SK user, 5+ years now and they were able to recover just over half of my data.
I think there should be some sort of better copensation than the 20$ I got for losing half my data.
If you want a slightly dumb smartphone go for a sidekick, easy to use and works like a charm, just dont expect a good app store.
Statistically speaking, the odds of lightning striking a certain place twice are lower than the odds of lightning striking a certain place once, but after lightning has already struck, the odds of it striking again are identical to the odds of it striking in the first place.
@AJ in the East Bay
Indeed.
