Warner's DVD2Blu trade-in swaps Blu-rays for your DVDs, Leland Gaunt approves
After baptizing the remaining HD DVD faithful, Warner has moved on to teaching new Blu-ray converts the five pillars of faith with a trade-up program. Send in your old DVDs (just the box art won't cut it this time around, better buy some blanks and get to ripping if you still enjoy Training Day on long car trips), $7.95 - $9.95 per movie plus $4.95 for s&h (orders over $25 ship for free) and expect HD versions back in 4 - 5 weeks. Is it worth it? Depends on how many of the 55 flicks on the approved list you own (included after the break) but for most you're probably better off keeping the ones you have and eyeing budget bins carefully, nabbing catalog flicks like Harold & Kumar for less than $15 without any mail-in shenanigans shouldn't be too hard for the truly thrifty.

When do I get VHS2Blu?
@Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder
You need to exchange it for laser disk first
I haven't heard anything but you might want to check out VHS2HDDVD
Test.
@Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith-ATDF Co-Founder
Ha. I was thinking the same thing. I don't know what to do with my stupid ancient VHS tapes.
so cant i just buy these dvd's used and cheap on ebay/craigslist and trade them in or will they somehow figure it out
@Sharukh Mithani
THEY WILL COME TO YOUR HOUSE AND KNOCK DOWN YOUR DOOR.
(in seriousness, it would be cheaper just to buy the blu ray)
not a bad idea actually, i have checked some stores for some of my favorites and they're about $30 so 50% off might just be worth it
$15 (total) each? That's about how much it would cost to go buy those titles new off of Amazon (with 5 day delivery instead of 5 week delivery)
Move along people.
@Badger_badger_badger
Read again... The 5 dollar shipping is for the total order and only if your order is less than 25 dollars, if it is larger than 25 shipping is free, making the prices between 7.95 and 9.95 per movie.
Only if you upgrade 1 movie is the cost ~$15.
cool deal but is it the exact title you would be swapping
@3rdsun Read the article...
Would be cooler if you could choose from more than 55 titles. Maybe someone else should come up with a larger list and I'd be interested in trading in my 400+ DVD's
@Jaylittles531 Very much agreed. I have plenty of DVDs to trade in, but none of those...
Rip off in many cases the DVDs value+ $5-$10 equals the cost of these Blu-rays at many stores, these are all old films and readily available for between $15 and $20 in the first place.
Congratulations, most of those movies I wouldn't want to own on DVD OR Bluray.
Aren't most of these available through Netflix Watch Instantly anywaysl Based on the poor selection of titles, these have made for television written all over them.
Warner Bros. should really re-think their marketing plan. They're about 6-8 months late to the party (kind of like Microsoft). Should have introduced them when Blu-ray first came out.
I can go to Amazon and get most of these discs for a few bucks less than what Warner wants to charge, plus not have to wait the 5 weeks (and I get to keep my discs). No thanks Warner Bros -- and the studios still think they can make Netflix or Redbox wait 30 days to rent movies? With such a real 'winning' selection, once again they think they can force the consumer into buying their terrible movies. Yeah right!
Only think that would screw you up is if the el cheapo DVD you have was counterfeit. If you mail it to them and they reject it, then you're out a DVD I'd guess.
The use of religious terminology in technology-related articles lately is somewhat disturbing.
@Resolution
technology is a religion to some people :P
It's a great idea, until you realize you're basically buying the same movie all over again. I'm tired of buying the same movie every time a new edition or format comes out. It's one of the reasons I stopped buying DVDs. Would much rather use Netflix for the bulk of the movies I want to watch.
It should be free. But since that won't happen they should at least make it cheaper and not take as long. 4-5 week wait is way too long.
I like the idea of this, but the prices ought on some titles to go down in price about $2.50 and Warners is missing some key titles for me:
goonies
lethal weapon 1, 2
kiss kiss bang bang
bullit
amadeus
true romance
Uhh...well it's not hard to find inexpensive blu ray discs. Amazon always has sales and there are many other places to look. Paying 7.95-9.95, plug another 5 bucks for shipping...this isn't worth it at all.
I saw the headline of the article and thought "FUCK YEAH!"
Then I read the article and though "FUCK NO!"
it would be even cooler than that if i had a blue ray player... but since i dont and im not getting one any time soon...
not exactly sure how WB thinks im dumb enough to spend MORE money on some of these titles than i did bying them on DVD in the first place...but then again... it is WB so there ya go...
Need to find a way to get Casablanca Blu-ray for cheap... I've got the DVD but no luck with this program. I like the special edition--but why can't they make a plain one for film-loving college students at the University of Chicago, for example?
Yeah, you guys are right, this isn't that great of a deal. Only $1 - $10 off per movie (most only $2) & you have to send your DVD to them. I'd rather pay the extra $2 and give the DVD to a friend.
Sweet!
Not only is this idea full of it...but they don't even have the Matrix on the list? I'm guessing this program was set up for the *ahem* non-professional movie shoppers out there (translation: Suckers). Seriously, in this day and age of internet shopping, there plenty of places to get Blu-ray discs at bargain prices.
Watch out for Wilma Jerzyck - she has a mean temper.
I used Red2Blu.com to exchange some of my HD DVDs for Blu-Ray discs. That was a good deal. $4.95 plus shipping to exchange them. Once I got the notice that they received my HD-DVD artwork, I received my movies in less than a week. They even sent me the Ultimate Matrix Trilogy box set on Blu-Ray when I only had the Complete Matrix set on HD-DVD. The price difference new was about $50 or so. This does not seem to be nearly as good of a deal.
@Michael Bushnell I was thinking the exact same thing. the red2blue exchange was great. i got to keep all my hddvd's and in return received brand new blu rays for 4.95. this deal sucks

I am not sure you guys are reading this correctly, you don't have to pay 4.95 per title to ship them. That is the total shipping charge. And if you get more than $25 worth (~3 movies...) then shipping is free.
The only time you will have to pay 15 dollars for one of these movies is if it is the only one you get. In that case it does not make sense, but if you need more than one the price is hard to match...
So for the 7 movies I want to upgrade it is $59.65 shipped, or ~$8.52 a movie, which can't be matched, even on these films...
Still too expensive. I've been saying all the studios need some sort of olive branch program like this with respect to DVD --> Blu, but this first attempt still doesn't entice me in the least to go ahead with it. Greedy asses.
I was hoping that some of the earlier non-animorphic Warner DVDs would be on the list, but sadly, I don't see any.
walmart has pre-order of a new release around $15 with blu-ray, dvd and digital copy.
Read purely for the Leland Gaunt reference.
@JCShroyer Same here. I wonder how many picked up on the reference.
@JCShroyer
I listened to the audio books, so I hadn't seen the name in print, but once I read it, it totally tickled the back of my mind. It took me about a minute to figure out how I knew the name. Anyway, I also read the article and the comments only because of the reference.

I just priced Full Metal Jacket, Blazing Saddles, and Wyatt Earp (the only ones I have that I'd swap).
$26 through this program.
$31 from Amazon and I get to keep/sell the DVDs.
Um... no thanks.
Superman Returns, Wedding Crashers and Dumb and Dumber.
$25.85 shipped though the WB program
$49.93 from Amazon
Good deal when you look at it, but all I really want on Blu-ray of those 3 is SR. It's currently $23.95 on Amazon, but I think I saw a Black Friday ad listing it for $12, so I guess I could just do that.
Just to comment on those that say there should be a trade in at lmost no cost - DVD to Bluray. THERE's NO WAY that will happen. Blu Ray discs are a new product. Sure you might see the same thing but there's a lot of work being done on many of these titles. Older DVDs probably needed to be remastered for BR and the newer ones still have authoring costs associated with them. A minimal cost swap out isn't gonna happen. Movie studios, just like any for-profit business, won't do something that COSTS them money. Tape to CD didn't swap stuff for free. SDTV to HDTV didn't give you a rebate for trading up etc etc. Yes, I wish they had a lot more titles available. I have 100s of DVDs as well. Frankly, there are only certain titles (probably 20%) that I feel would benefit from an upgrade to BR. Most are B-movies that were cheap when I got them and only get watched again once in a long while. All my new purchases are BR mind you.
Of that list, only certain Cinematic titles seem worth it eg Last Samurai.
Everyone new that someday the HD Disc would come along and make our vast DVD collections 2nd rate. Whining that it cost you a lot and you want a free (or nearly free) upgrade is out of touch with how most of the electronics industry works.
I'm amused by the mac screen on the illustration.
THis is such a smart idea.
How is this a good deal or favor to DVD owners?
I didn't see 1 DVD I wanted to convert over to Blu-Ray. I did do the HD DVD to Blu-Ray, and traded ALL my WB movies except 2 they didn't have. 1 they do now, but it's not worth it until both are posted, so I'm waiting. I wish the others Studio's would do the same thing. I'd like to get rid of all my HD DVD's. Then I wouldn't need all my extra backup HD DVD players that I have. I do still like the HD DVD format better though. HDi was far faster then the BD-Java Blu-Ray is using.
