wow i really like it too. it automatically recognized my google sign in. now i dont have to bother with signing in anymore. i will be commenting alot more because of this.
@Alexander-trom You're not verified. You need to log out and log back in and claim your username. That goes for anyone who sees unverified on this page!
@Casey Manley i kinda don't. The "design geniuses" who created the commenting system are obviously not that bright, having used ITALICS for the whole name and date row. There are just too much slanted words on a busy canvas that creates a hard to read area. I'm a graphic designer, and i've read tons of books on the matter and this is a NO NO in design theory. Also the boxes around the comments are getting a bit tough on the eyes.
We all agree that the commenting system was a bit flawed at it's functionality level, but the design was good - clear and easy to follow... With this new one is so hard to read the comments that it's almost Gizmodo.
Also, the font for the main content and titles is a serif font, which is usually used for fancyier or stylish content, not tech blogs.
1.) What's with the weird coloring on the "Low Ranked" and "Lowest Ranked"? They have this weird green tint on a letter or two? Or is that my monitor or eyes going batty?
2.) I can still click on the date of each person's comment and get to those specific comments, but I can't click on a comment from someone's profile and get to the comments specifically?
Eh, the only thing I would change is to switch to a san serif font in the article body. I just don't like reading serif fonts on screen. But I use an RSS reader most of the time, so I will stop bitching. Looks awesome engadget!
@Michael Scrip I second that request. I really don't like having to expand all comments to get the whole thread visible every time I open a page. Autoexpanding all threads should at least be an option on our profiles.
I agree, the typeface is horrible. I can't be bothered reading it any more as it gives me a headache. Bye Engadget, you just ruined a perfectly good blog.
Agreed... Times New Roman for the body text is a mistake... it makes me cringe , and really doesn't make sense when you consider all of the comments, story titles, and sub-titles are all sans serif fonts. How did that one slip by? It's never a good idea to mix serif and sans serif fonts, and the serif fonts really don't compliment the feel of the new site. At all.
Also, what's up with the front page? I'm viewing full screen on a 1280x800 screen, and I have to jump past the break (and then some) to see the latest posts! And what's up with the multiple separated horizontal menus?
Overall, I appreciate the new look and feel, but there's still some quirks to work out for sure...
I agree with you.. it's like gizmodo now. I am not getting interest to read the comments. just keep the old commenting system with new features. Highest and Lowest ranked comments look good in older system. Please engadget i beg you change it.
@Bogdan absolutely agreed, this design is a mess, its completely confusing and the font selection is terrible, please fix some of this stuff, i'd hate to have to leave here
@Casey Manley Overall I like the look of the new site, but a few changes would be nice.
1. Ability to edit comments (Why do so many sites not have this feature? 1a. At least give us a preview function 2. Auto expand replies, very frustrating to expand each one 3. What was wrong with the color coded "Highly Ranked" comments before? One quick glance showed all the blue boxes of comments worth reading. A small text box is not the same. 4. Comment text size is too small... way to small 5. Time and date should not be italics, or at least make it a sans serif font
Every new redesign has its issues, and I think the site looks good, just a few tweaks to make it even better.
@greenskye Just after posting my last comment came up with some more 1. A "First" button to navigate comment pages. Took me 5 links to get back to the first page after commenting. 2. After commenting the site should load to your comment. You don't even have a preview function, the least you could do is show me my comment. 3. Possibly an option to show more than 50 comments per page. I have fast internet, I can handle the extra loading times.
@greenskye I agree. I really think everyone needs to take a look at what gdgt.com has done with their commenting system. It works really well and allows you to edit for 4 minutes after posting.
@greenskye Totally. The serifed fonts are less than ideal, especially in the actual Engadget posts. There's a reason most of the web is sans serif, and it has a lot to do with readability at low DPI.
Also, its annoying how the content is getting pushed farther and farther down the page. I have to scroll the height of my monitor to get at actual content.
@Bogdan Good thoughts! I would be impressed if Engadget editors pay much attention to the criticism we post here, but I have some more ideas. The differences between the font sizes on the front page are too large. We have headlines/titles that are 3 times larger than body text, and they are in a capitalized, heavy black, aggressive font. This makes them very loud compared to the delicate serif. Also, on the comment pages, the comment font is pretty small compared to everything else, it's harder to read. automatically expanding comment threads would be cool, too. I'd be delighted if designers here would consider making the fonts a bit more uniform in size, thanks.
i like it so far, i just miss the old, light blue, blog title links. i think they should be changed back from the new black. and i mean, now that everything is on one site (mobile, hd), why not color code the links, in that mobiles would be pink, black for hd, blue for original.
@Casey Manley The only thing I'd change is the fonts. Use the same font everywhere, its like a freaking 1950's advertisement, every font on every page, next they'll throw in some comic sans for something. What to much text manipulation, bold, different colors, serif, sans serif, random different sizes. Its mess to read.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
I'm lovin' it.
@Casey Manley
wow i really like it too. it automatically recognized my google sign in. now i dont have to bother with signing in anymore. i will be commenting alot more because of this.
NO edits STILL????????
@Alexander-trom You're not verified. You need to log out and log back in and claim your username. That goes for anyone who sees unverified on this page!
@jeesusfreek
No edits, but you can reply to a reply!
@MeanSpyvie
Or maybe not...
Very nice.
@Casey Manley
I'm not... Still no edits or previews before you submit.
And still no way to go directly to a specific comment from your profile page.
And I STILL can't change my profile pic!
@Joshua Topolsky
I'd like to see a Previous/Next Comments nav bar at the top as well as the bottom of the comments.
@MeanSpyvie
Yes... I was thinking the same exact thing when I posted above!
I hate being dumped to the last page... then having to click "Previous 50 Comments"... THEN click on page 1
I kinda liked the original, all text site...
I keed -- this site looks great!
@Casey Manley I was going to make a comment about how this looks like gizmodo, but you guys actually use a readable font. Kudos.
@Casey Manley
i kinda don't.

@Casey Manley same here
@Joshua Topolsky
So two things confuse me:
1.) What's with the weird coloring on the "Low Ranked" and "Lowest Ranked"? They have this weird green tint on a letter or two? Or is that my monitor or eyes going batty?
2.) I can still click on the date of each person's comment and get to those specific comments, but I can't click on a comment from someone's profile and get to the comments specifically?
@Casey Manley
Wow... I got perhaps the most common username ever. I'll cherish it forever.
@Casey Manley
Yeah but the user picture is still not completely working correctly.
@Casey Manley
Me too. So pretty...
BTW, what's the font you use in the hero module? (THe big Moto Droid thingy on the frontpage)
Whats this!
I dont like change!
@Joshua Topolsky
Is there a way to have it automatically expand each thread?
So it will at least kinda work like the old site?
Thanks!
@Casey Manley
Oh sweet! It automatically adds an @..... blah to my post!
That's so useful! click reply to the person in a reply thread, and have the name automatically included! Awesome!
@Joshua Topolsky
No underscores in new usernames? Did I miss something? jgpuff just looks stupid now.
@Casey Manley didn't realise my sister designed the new engadget site!
@Bogdan

@Casey Manley its just a lil slowwwww
@Joshua Topolsky
I seriously do not understand why the font size is so tiny. It's practically unreadable and a guaranteed eye-strain. Please fix it!
Times New Roman needs to die. Way too hard to read.
@Bogdan
I agree with you.. it's like gizmodo now. I am not getting interest to read the comments. just keep the old commenting system with new features.

@reisa
Just making sure I had my usnername.
Hate it.
Want old one back.

Yay. The comments are fixed. I don't find the fonts hard to read at all.

I go to sleep for a measly 4 hours and THIS happens!?!?
Nicely done

looks great except for the times new roman. Choose a new font!
