OCZ needs a name for USB 3.0 solid state drive
That faint sound you can hear right now is the approaching sonic boom of a new portable speedster. OCZ, already the proud patriarch of some pretty radical SSD varieties, has confirmed a new external drive that will hook up via the super speedy USB 3.0 interconnect (whose uncertain future we've discussed here). It's no secret that SSDs tend to get all choked up around current-gen USB or Firewire connections, so we always welcome forward-thinking new drives with open arms. OCZ is still in the process of crowdsourcing a name for its new product, so don't look for specs just yet, but if there are any mysteries left by January, rest assured that CES 2010 will clear them all up.

How about "OSZ USB 3.0 Solid State Drive".
@Arkenklo how about the "if you have to ask you can't afford it" drive
@Josh
How about "Bob from Encyte"

@Owen
Simple and effective . . . I like it!
I say call it the OCZ Ocyroe. Well, its actually spelled OCYRHOE but its a Greek name which means "fast-flowing"
@incognito I like the one with the hoe better.
@incognito
If we're getting into Greek, how about Tachyon? A faster-than-light particle (who cares if it exists or not). I think it's a little easier to read/pronounce for the average Joe than Ocyrhoe.

"I'll just leave this hear."
i hope that was a pun.
Call it the Usain Bolt drive, that should set some records

OCZ Fusion
Anyone know if USB3.0 will support SMART? That has always been an irritation for me but it seems that USB3.0 treats HDD's differently then older versions.
I've got one: "useless for the next couple of years"
@amf5
Given that USB 3 is backwards compatible with USB 2, that's not correct. But I take you point that its potential is limited for a while...
"That faint sound you can hear right now is the approaching sonic boom"
- Silly Vlad, you can't hear a sonic boom approaching! "Faster than sound" give you any clues? :)
@r3loaded Must we let such trifling things as facts and reality get in the way of a good metaphor?

"It's no secret that SSDs tend to get all choked up around current-gen USB or Firewire connections"
It's also no secret that current gen ROTATIONAL hard drives get choked up arpund current-gen USB and Firewire connections.
But since only in a very few instances do even current-gen SSD drives get "choked up around" SATA connections, why not just use eSATA instead for your portable drive?
Most newer laptops are coming with eSATA ports, as well as desktops, and you can power a 2.5 inch eSATA enclosure with a single USB 2.0 port.
Seems to me if I'm going to have to spend money on a super speedy external SSD drive, I might as well use an interace my computer already has.......
Since the relative speed difference is negligible in current gen tech........

I'l bet it's due to the ubiquitous nature of USB. Users of every level are already comfortable with the interface, and USB also bus powers devices unlike eSATA.

Yeah agree - though if they could now integrate power into the SATA spec it would be so much easier (few cables inside my pc and external SATA much more elegant)
OCZ Files Copy Fast.
They should call it OCZygen "You need it!"
OCZ Supersonic
Now that's a name.
