Microsoft roadmap pegs Windows 8 release for 2012, or just after the world's end
It's somewhat hard to believe that we're already talking about Windows 8 given that Windows 7 just hit the shelves two months ago, but you know the engineers at Microsoft are already planning ahead. According to a roadmap constructed over at Microsoft Kitchen -- based around whispers heard through the grapevine on the eventual release of the next Windows Server -- the next iteration of Windows is tentatively pegged for release in the year 2012. Of course, a three-year window between Windows 7 and the next version is totally believable, but we wouldn't go planning your end of the world party with the assumption that a new OS will be the main attraction. Or you could, but then you might be disappointed, which would be a sucky way to go out.

Great codename.
WOOT!! VANT W8 FOR WINDOWS 18!!!
I wonder when THAT will come out...
So, according to this information, it should be released in 2015?
I see what you did there.
Just letting you guys know, I'm a PC and Windows 8 was my idea.
old my friend, your idea too late.
Let's interrogate him for facts
...and it's not gonna have any of the problems that Windows 7 had.
Perfection.
I lol'ed. Windows 9 will be my idea.
I'm Microsoft, and your joke was my idea.
Does MS want to be the God of OS in the new world?
Does a bear shit in the woods?
Does the Pope have a balcony?
Does the pope shit on his balcony?
ms actually IS the god of os and will be for at least another decade. just stating the facts.
wow, already? it will be interesting to see how much they stick to this roadmap. If Windows 8 is going to be anything like 7 it should be an amazing OS!!
I'm waiting for the ultimate OS:
Windows 42
7 terabyte of space required for the error messages alone? ;)
its the ultimate OS. it has no error messages dumbass
I believe you mean TERRAbyte.
The Ultimate OS is already called Sno....
I won't even go there.
I see what you did there.
Goku Linux Penguin
Epic
yeah, just stay where you are
That avatar made my day.
If only goku linux pengiun has some buddies?
who would be microsoft be?
mac?
I LOVE IT!
@Alex R no the ultimate os won't delete all your data when u log in a guest account try again
Darren: you seem to be assuming that the world will end before Windows 8 comes out. Maybe Windows 8 LEAD to the end of the world by activating Skynet.
this is so cool, u made a connection to the machine war huh...
i bet we couldn't be sure when the world will end but let's hope to see any major flaw yet to discover in win7 to be resolved in the next release or perhaps win8 will be like the all touch-the-air OS with folders & windows flying in front of the eyes of user(s) w/o a monitor.
WOOOOOOOOSH
We can just use Andriod to counter-act Skynet... oh wait, they're machines too... WE'RE DOOMED!!!
Google act more and more like skynet these days.
no, the LHC is going to keep getting delayed until 2012, when it will end the world.
I also wonder if John Cusakk will be endorsing this. Scott Mcfarland already prostituted his intellectual property, will Roland Emmerich do the same?
"It's somewhat hard to believe that we're already talking about Windows 8"
you clearly have no clue how large scale software development works ...
"you clearly have no clue how large scale software development works ... "
And judging from what we saw with Longhorn and Vista, neither do most of the coders at Microsoft.
So...wait. If Windows 7 is 6.1, what'll Windows 8 be? The actual Windows 7?
You are aware Windows 7 IS version 7 but was labeled 6.1 to retain compatibility, right?
But the problem is it's not.

Build-wise, vista is to Win7 as Win95 is to Win98. And as you can see from the link, releases in the same series (and that's not just a naming thing) are pegged together in the same version. That is to say, Vista and Win7 are apart of the same version because their builds are in the same series. 6.1 isn't just for compatibility reasons, it's because it's just a perfection of 6. Shunnabunich's question is legitimate, and I also want to know if it is going to be a new build or not.
It is the 7th version of windows but the NT kernel is version 6.1. There is a difference.
"Build-wise, vista is to Win7 as Win95 is to Win98."
Win 95 was 16Bit Win 98 was 32Bit thats a pretty large scale difference so you really don't know what you're talking about.
The kernel of 7 is very similar to Vista but they redesigned almost everything else, 6.1 IS for compatibilty !
@fourthletter:
In fact, you are the one who is wrong. The Windows 9x series is formed from hybrid 16-bit/32-bit OSes and they have a verson of 4.x.
This is akin to Windows Vista/Windows 7, which are part of the 6.x series. Windows 7 was NOT rewritten. Vista was the one where a lot of rewrites took place, setting up the foundation for Windows 7, which is indeed a minor update to Vista.
My take: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 are their names. 5.1, 6.0 and 6.1 are their kernel versions. Like Ubuntu 9.10 having the 2.x kernel.
Will it contain the database-based file system they´ve been promising for at least ten years?
I don't care what file system they use as long as it doesn't suck as much as NTFS does.
I assuming if means WinFS? Either way it was meant for After Vista, aka Win 7, but its still unknown when it will be implemented
They´ve been promising that one since Win98 was on the market and it was supposed to become an integral part of Longhorn.
Kinda sad considering nowadays it´s one of their strengths. And their SQL Server is pretty much the only high-end MS product that is more than worth its money.
You know the only reason SQL Server is decent is because it's not originally Microsoft's product, right? If they had to write their own SQL engine, it still wouldn't be finished - or it'd be as bad as the Jet Engine was (i.e., terrible).
Sure, but unlike other acquisitions (e.g. Visio) they somehow managed to not screw it up but instead improve it even more.
Hopefully the next versions of Windows and Windows Server will be just 64-bit. It's already been 8 years since Microsoft released Windows XP, their first 64-bit OS.
It´s pretty much overdue. Especially since even XP64 already had pretty good support for 32 bit legacy apps.
