PlayStation 2 finally launches in Brazil for the bargain price of around US $462
You read that right. Sony's PlayStation 2, which the great majority of the world has been enjoying since 2000, is just now officially touching ground in Brazil. We're pretty sure it's been making its way into the country for many years by not-so-official means, but if you've gone the legit route, last-generation's game console king can be yours for just 799 Brazilian Real, which we're sad to say translates to about $461 in US currency. Yeah, we're expecting this to just fly off the shelves.

What a bargain.
Here in Pakistan we've had the PS2 being smuggled from UAE stores (God know how they smuggled it all over the sea) to local markets. Pre-modded (with some kinda cheapo modchips).
Sony never released that thing here, but those do sell like hot cakes here. Smugglers are earning big time. Good days.
Yeha, When I was there in 2005, People would have them imported from the US and sell them for about 650 Real.. But somehow it's more expensive now? haha. Good ol President Lua
.... I would imagine they were able to smuggle it all over the sea by boat..
I don't remember having an satelite as a president.
Imagine the PS3 selling there.
"A bargain price of ONLY US $4,000!"
Just du** a** ppl talking here, these ppl doesnt know about PARAGUAY. And Engadget wish is to made their blog in portuguese, so they goes for a post like that.
I bought my ps3 for US$600 idiot...hehehe
We pay 60% of import tax and plus 14% of state tax, plus the shipping cost, of course.
Do they even know the PS3 exists? What if I bring a PS3 claiming I'm from the future and sell it for thousands?
America doesn't have the PS4 yet?! I've said too much..
The PSP might scare the poplulation
Not to mention the PSPgo
not to mention your avatar
Heck, maybe by the time this thing starts appearing (legitimately) in people's homes the PSP2 will be out and emulate it. -.-
Don't you mean the PSP Go?
Only for your information, xbox 360 was officially launched in 2007 (Brazil), so Sony is stupid to sell a old video-game here and more PS2 was available here since 2002...
CRAZY.. still congrats, at least BR will finally have a taste of PS 2...
We are playing PS2 for a long time now. Imported PS2's are cheaper that that.
Sweet, now we just have to wait for them to translate all the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games to Portuguese. Something tells me babelfish just isn't going to cut it.
I don't know..maybe I'm crazy, but wouldn't they already have Portuguese versions of games already...in Portugal...where this weird embargo never happened?
Brazilian portuguese and Portugal portuguese ar almost like US and UK english, its the same but not really the same
There are many games for ps2 translated here in portugal, but most of them are children games like the ones from disney and others. The remaining games usually come in plain english, wich isn't totally bad because it encourages people to learn to speak the language. Now, just try to speak english with a spanish guy and you'll understand why is it bad to have all the games and movies translated to spanish..
I think it's worse than comparing the different english types.
huh?
They speak portugese in Brazil... Spain settled central America, Portugal settled parts of south America.
Not really a matter of who settled where, Portugal got the "rights" to the brazilian territory as a result of the trety of Tordesillas and its endorsement by the Pope, who at the time happened to be a spaniard.
You forgot to say that we are still walking without pants by the streets and everywhere else.
kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
Essa foi boa......rsrsrs
..what are you guys talking about?
:)
your BD avatar
disclaimer:
i meant 'huh?', as in, why did it take sony so long to get it to Brazil, and why is their pricing so ridiculous.
sony just goes LOCO.
Hell cheaper than a PS3.. O.o
omg. is this true? i thought 3rd world countries got stuff way before official release dates...
3rd world? Get out of Narnia please, your reality needs a checkup and their wizards ain't gonna cut it..
But look at all the launch titles...how many systems have this many titles at launch?
Why even bother releasing it at this point?
I don't know, maybe because it's the best-selling console of all time?
Not at that price point.
zing!
Damn, why did they haven't lunch the PS3 instead?
I haven't had lunch either
Haha, funny mistake! I'm not really good at speeling *french canadian*
Perhaps that didn't match their tastes. PS3 is more of a dinner thing.
well...i got a PS3..
there are plenty of 3rd world countries that have had PS2 for year and on the cheap. But Nanny- Banana Republics states like Brazil reap what they sow
Why don't you fu#$k yourself!
FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-
WUT??? You guys on meth or sth?
Srsly, PS2s were released here a billion ages ago, PS3's been up for grabs for quite a while, wtf?
Legal, or grey-market?
@3DSteve: and why consumers care??
