Wired shows off an Apple tablet-formatted copy of Wired on a fake Apple tablet
It's a wild land of imagination over at Wired and Condé Nast these days. The pair have managed not only to dream up a colorful, animated copy of Wired magazine for the so-far imaginary Apple tablet, but actually whipped up a concept of a Apple tablet to go with it. The Willy Wonka-style pairing are being shown off at the Wired Store in New York, and go along with word the other day that Condé Nast was taking the development of "iTablet" versions of its publications very seriously. Perhaps a bit too seriously? We're not ones to judge. Video of the tablet is after the break.

Good grief.
Agreed, how foolish. 1. a tablet should NOT require specially formatted web sites. 2. ugh... i just threw up a little
a warning about the music would've been cool of u guys.
Yeah. Jesus that music was awful. More like complete and unadulterated noise.
Thanks for the heads up. Muted before I clicked.
Sounds like a techno party at the Bose factory.
I like it =D Sounds like minimal but a little louder and faster. More or less like the "kaniO pick n mix" but with more sound in it.
How can you even call that music?!
Smh in utter disbelief....
Would've been 10x more impressive without the obnoxious music.
What a piece of crap ~
Wow! I'm talking about wtf with the music!
lolol the music couldnt be better.
Seems like a good entry for a science fair project by one of my little cousins, and using that accelerometer on anything that god created isn't really that good of an idea; let us keep it for the smaller handheld devices! Jeez!
looks pretty slick. it's hard to tell how interactive it will be, but it looks to be sort of a combination of a website and print magazine, which would be fantastic. especially with Wired, i've always loved the print magazine but i don't like the idea of wasting paper and having stacks of magazines laying around the house, and i also like the interaction on some of their web media but I've found it lacking in design aesthetics compared to the print version. this, however, is actually something i'd pay money for a digital subscription to, so long as it's rightfully cheaper than it's print counterpart and offers more than the website already does.
this is saying nothing of the actual tablet, which i'm guessing has a 90% chance of being a real product at this point, and which may or may not be worth the money to me personally. we'll have to see where the price lands.
As ridiculous as it is for them to do this, at least it's getting more dedicated research into visual/touch-based interfaces with the web in a non-smartphone sense. Half the reason (besides tiring you out) touch on a desktop is not much more than a gimmick IMHO is that it's just replacing the standard interface (mouse) with your finger. Better standardized formatting for different interfaces would be pretty sweet.
I have no idea what any of those replies have to do with my post. I was saying in the general sense of touch interfaces, irrespective of whether or not an Apple tablet ever exists. I dig the blocking of downranked comments, but the front page seems way too cluttered now I think.
DIE APPLE TABLET, DIE
It hasn't even been born yet.
Perhaps he's giving it an abortion... ahahahha
Sorry let me rephrase:
DIE APPLE TABLET RUMORS, DIE
I'm wondering, wouldn't it be smart to have a software that people can use NOW to view interactive magazines on their computers or mobile phones? At least the mag companies will be able to see what kind of response it would get from readers.
I was excited about Apple's Tablet until I saw the pricing. I am in the market for a living-room computing device in as convenient a form factor as possible for passing around.
As an Apple fan I likely would have gone quite a bit over scheduled competitors but I'm afraid they lost me with the outrageous price* tags. $2K for an OLED and $1K+ for an LCD? Sorry, but I'd likely buy an Archos 9, the ODM and the Dell and still have change for what the Apple would cost.
*Rumored price, of course. I still have a glimmer of hope.
wow, i want that. now.
Paul Miller, save some room for later.
Slow news day???
I love how the actual device hasent even been confirmed.
Haha ya
I don't know whats worse: the music, or the fact that someone decided to make an app for a product that DOESNT EXIST YET.
Seriously, lay off the Kool Aid guys...
I would absolutely agree with you, except for the fact that Apple tends to price their devices so far out of reality that it doesn't have that spurring effect that competitively priced technologies are set at. Their iTablet will probably coast a thousand bucks and require a kidney as downpayment.
Haven't the industry like catch message that magazines are no longer desirable as today's generation get their news instantly from blogs like engadget? Wired style magazines are thing of the past, you can see it your self if you compare wired vs engadget in alexa for instance, engadget growing much faster.

LoL. Apple Fan Girls.
I think I may have finally heard something worse than rap music.
If you're saying that then you've never heard real rap.
""Life's a Bitch," but God-forbid the bitch divorce me
I'll be flooded with ice so hellfire can't scorch me" - Nas
"You stoppin' us is preposterous, like an androgenous masohganist

Oh, to be Apple:
1. Let others dream up concepts
2. People on the internet discuss pros and cons of said product
3. Someone else makes a mockup
4. Build the device.
5. Profit!
I wonder what would happen if Wired or Engadget paid attention to the touchscreen tablets that are out there right now? At what point do media magazines become advertising kiosks for companies? Isn't it a type of self-fulfilling proposition for media to generate hype about a hypothetical product and then defend their coverage of the hype by pointing to the buzz that was initially generated by said media?
So annoying music!
Ummm, this is the so called iTablet that Apple has not even confirmed...
oh c'mon!! whats the point of a tablet if the web(sites) has to be redesigned to be usable?
thats also what i find so ridiculous about the iphone apps: half of them are iphone optimized websites...no wonder there are 100000 of them...
/ranting
The whole point of a tablet, if implemented properly, is that it provides publishers an alternative to print media, while still retaining a cost in delivering it. There isn't a website out there that offers the exact same material as its print counterpart, and it's a problem a lot of major publishers are struggling with at the moment. People no longer want to have to go to a shot buy a hefty pile of paper, while at the same time, don't want to pay a website to read it. The Tablet solution that people are touting offers a medium of which people can pay for digital subscriptions and drop the paper and effort to get it.
So in short, there is a huge difference between this and websites. This offers actual content, not rushed staff-writer crap that gets posted on websites.
I'm all for it, Apple or not, it just needs to be developed right with an easy to access and navigate store of subscriptions and have a screen that is comfortable to read long sections of text off.
You should check out Robert X. Cringely's take on the Apple tablet, quite interesting...
Hey, is that flash running smoothly?
