Ostendo now selling CRVD display directly; multiple CRVD display rig blows minds on video
We first saw Ostendo's crazy CRVD monitor at CES 2008 with Alienware branding, and then again at Macworld 2009 with an NEC label, but it looks like those were just flirtations: the monster 2880 x 900 quad-DLP display has been quietly on sale directly from the mothership since late August. Ostendo tell us most of the units sold have been for defense simulation and training, but there are apparently some gamers out there hardcore enough to stomach the $6,499 price tag -- including a few who've purchased multiple units. We're also told that multi-monitor CRVD applications are forthcoming, which sounds insane -- and is even wilder on video. Check it after the break.

Too much bezel, still.
@ROFL
insane resolution at an abysmal framerate. Top it off with a price tag that will burn in my pocket for years to come. No thanks.
Good thing for the Defense industry though.
@ROFL: Those aren't bezels, they're A-pillars! ;)
@ROFL I like a bit of bezel on my wom.. er I mean screens.
Why not just buy yourself a car if you can swallow that price?
@DoorsnotWindows
If you can afford this, you already have a car. Multiple cars. And they're all worth more than $6,499
@DoorsnotWindows
You could afford... so... many... speeding...tickets...
@DoorsnotWindows gee ya think they havent thought of that before buying this? this is for the money left over after your garage is already overflowing with cars.
@DoorsnotWindows Why buy a car when he can sing "I'm on a boat" everyday? http://www.luxist.com/2009/03/17/dubai-ruler-debuts-worlds-largest-superyacht/
If arabs buy it maybe they just got tired of the scenery of sand sand and sand.
Wow, that's impressive. But three of those are definitely not worth almost $20G.
@EljhHck
You are correct, they are worth $19.497G.
@EljhHck
Ok for your average consumer and gamer - hell no
BUTTTT for a music or film studio doing some serious work...
1 or 2 might be nice. Real nice
I'll take 6. This would be sick to play Orbiter with.
or Space Shuttle Mission 2007. Awesome zoom pow!
My crown prince whips your crown prince in COD.
That looks WAY too distorted, the problem with curved displays, is that there is no games out there coded to render in a way to correct for curvature distortion, which is why the mirror on the right is larger than the mirror on the left, despite the fact that it's supposed to be further away.
@Amnesia87 Which is why the promotional image shows Final Cut Pro.
@Amnesia87 I'd say the distortion is due to the perspective. If you only look straight ahead, then it would actually look quite realistic in your peripheral vision. However, if you want to turn your head, then yes, distortion galore... It'll be sweet when they can get it to show a realistic 360 view so all you have to do is look around to see everything.
I bet you could tweak the renderer for most games to take the curvature into account...
@Amnesia87
I think your wrong. Curved or not, I don't think the problem would exist if it was one seamless screen. With out the bezel/borders of the screens the review mirrors would be identical distance.
@(Unverified) It's not a matter of the placement, it's a matter of the size. The image is distorted, because the fact is there is no game currently made other than maybe a flight sim that will render correctly, seeing as with 3 of them the game would need to run at 8640x900. It looks like they are using some sort of h-fill system similar to my TV's where instead of stretching the whole image it stretches the sides, to reduce distortion in the center, not really a fan of that. Part of what also makes it look so odd is that curved displays are far more influenced by perspective, depending on where you are viewing the display, the image will actually look different. This picture is taken no where near the "sweet spot" for the monitors which I'm guessing is 2-3 feet at the same height. This is closer to 6-8 feet and is looking down.
8 of these+swivel chair=hours of fun.
@Cam Swivel chair alone=hours of fun.
@Cam Google 'make your own zoetrope'. Might be cheaper :-p
The crown prince of Dubai does EVERYTHING.
its not like he actually works, so he has time
that's just too much awesome.
That's great that it's curved, maybe next they can make it have a useful vertical resolution.
Seriously, 2880x900 is pathetic at that size and for that price.
Now all we need is someone else to make one so there will be a "coverage" war...
Great horizontal, abysmal vertical. Any useful application is gaming/sim-related.
Yeah, I still want one.
I don't really see why anyone would want these monitors. If you used three regular projectors you could have a bigger screen, higher resolution and no bezel all for lower price.
@blitzkrieg
Framerate on this setup blows. I'm easily getting a playable framerate on my Eyefinity 5870 rig which pushes 7 megapixels and averages close to 30 fps on NFS Shift. This setup pushes only marginally more (7.5 megapixels) and it seems like its running 10 fps.
Ya know... I MIGHT just be crazy enough to get one of these, if there were more vertical resolution... 900 pixels just ain't enough!
i think i got dizzy from looking at that video..
You know, 20G's will buy more than a couple rounds a race track.
Is it me or is it really laggy?
One of these would definitely be cool...
I'd rather just buy a 4K or 8K projector...
@(Unverified) It does the ATI 5890 a reason to exist, though.
How many would it take to surround yourself in a circle with these?
@EliteGeek Depends how big you want the circle to be
Disneyland already accomplished this as early as 1965. Of course, those of us old enough to actually remember that theater. They played the film “America the Beautiful” but in today’s culture, that may be politically incorrect.
that's an awfully low resolution it seems. Yack.
Just get the damn Sony CineAlta 4K projector, dammit.
I will rather choose the ATi Eyefinity solution then, giving much higher possibilities and flexibility between price and viewing pleasure.
@(Unverified) I don't see the criticism as unjustified though. 900 vertical resolution is quite low, and you could probably get with 3x24" (1200 vertical) or 3x30" (1600 vertical) monitors for less. I'm sure this has some advantages, definitely it's curved, but despite the innovation I think it still falls short of being really useful.
It's all bent and stuff.
@(Unverified) that's what she said! (shit, i probably shouldn't be telling people that!)
Basically it's CINERAMA on your desktop. Interesting.....
@chamberlain2007 Yeah, but the monitors add that extra ADD factor, that wasn't there before.
