Ostendo now selling CRVD display directly; multiple CRVD display rig blows minds on video
We first saw Ostendo's crazy CRVD monitor at CES 2008 with Alienware branding, and then again at Macworld 2009 with an NEC label, but it looks like those were just flirtations: the monster 2880 x 900 quad-DLP display has been quietly on sale directly from the mothership since late August. Ostendo tell us most of the units sold have been for defense simulation and training, but there are apparently some gamers out there hardcore enough to stomach the $6,499 price tag -- including a few who've purchased multiple units. We're also told that multi-monitor CRVD applications are forthcoming, which sounds insane -- and is even wilder on video. Check it after the break.

If you have one of these and you maximize a window, would it fill the whole screen? I think I'd prefer two or more independent monitors, so I can maximize multiple windows. (I usually run a movie on VLC full screened on one screen and a game or FF on the other...)
@iFargle So you play games whilst watching movies?
Interesting.. wish I was that good at multi-tasking.
Wasn't this thing just a really thin rear projection DLP? Overhyped. Overpriced.
@(Unverified) If no one complained about new stuff, we would never see them improved, and we may never have some of the things we have today. If no one complained that they couldn't use a phone while on the go, we would never have seen a cell phone. Complaining makes the world go round, so why don't you stop complaining about all the complainers!
I was hoping this was going to be some hi-res display, but my 30" Cinema display has a resolution 2560x1600 which is more usable for software development.
At least it wasn't some Nigerian prince lol :D
We all know how that usually ends up...

Ew, what is that shitastic OS it's displaying?
@(Unverified)
What is it, exactly, that you have against OS X?
We should have more curved monitors, they look awesome.
Uh oh, you used the word 'monster' to describe a device, Engadget. You will pay for this!
Dear Santa,
I've been a very good boy this year....
Games should really get into the same thing they went for decades ago in military simulators, that is make the focus of the eye a high resolution part and the rest lower resolution
And for starters we need a simple way to have 1 central monitor run at max resolution and the side ones at lower res, but all running the same game and the same FoV.
So DirectX team and ATI and TWIMTBP guys, get to it.
@Wwhat
Do you mean depth of field? Where objects at greater distance or closer appear out of focus? How would the computer know what you were looking at?
@Wwhat
Grr, fighting with commenting system - not sure why your reply is all the way down there :)
Problem with that is you might want to look at what is going on to your sides. So the immersive feel only works if you're looking straight ahead. When I play games I don't stare at the centre of my screen and move the scene to look around... well, not until I want to look beyond the boundary of what's shown on my screen anyway :P
in the video, theres tooooo much negatie field of view.. i hate it :S
Money aside, you could make semi sphere around you. What you can use it for... well, why not?
The old saying prevails in that, if you can think of it, it can be done. I have no doubt that this technology will be perfected fairly soon.
Regards,
@Rebajas
Nah I meant field of vision, I meant that the screens look like one seamlessly except the side ones are drawn in lower resolution.
TOYS! Loved that movie :D
re: the vertical resolution being low, stack one on top of the other... LOL... make two rings around you.
I'm still waiting for the OLED version.
it's display, display, display, more display... and then no display!
is it just me or the game is kinda slow?
I NEED one of these....anybody have an extra $6,500 laying around they don't need?
FPS fail
Perfect for gaming when you really just want to empty your stomach!
