Wii pay-per-view programming introduced in Japan
Not only are we still waiting for the TV Guide Channel that Japanese Wii users have been indulging in for the better part of two years, but now Variety is reporting that Nintendo has teamed up with a dozen corporate partners to tease us with a Japanese pay-per-view service for the console. Premiering last Saturday, Wii no Ma (Wii's Room) currently has 120 titles, including episodes of Sesame Street and Pocket Monsters, available for prices ranging from ¥30 - ¥500 ($.35 - $5.63). According to Variety, titles can also be viewed on your Nintendo DSi handheld, a device known for its sonority and large, appealing display. No word yet on when we can enjoy a Stateside version, but we'll let you know as soon as we hear something. In the meantime, there's always PlayOn.

giving more life to the wii..
with this, they will probably reach the 80 million consoles sold worldwide target.

Great. SD TV is alive. So can this even be any higher resolution than 480p?
SD tv isnt really that bad...
I watch TV and movies in SD...
Considering that the Wii can only do 480i and p, no. But its not too big of a deal considering internet connections for many people in the US can only handle SDTV anyway.
Once you've watched FIOS HD and Blu-ray(on PS3) for over a year, going back to SD makes me want to puke. Beware, this is MY opinion, and it may differ from yours.
I thought that too, but I played MW2 on my friends 27" SDTV and honestly it isint all that bad. Of course I would love to go back to my 61" 1080p 120hz Samsung but the jump from SD to HD in video games is not as bad as the jump in movies. Now the jump from Stereo to 7.1 was hugggee for me and thats a different story lol
For those who don't know, Pocket Monsters == Pokemon.
really? it's just so absolutely difficult to put 1 and 1 together (in this case, half and half) that people couldn't figure out Pocket and Monster can form into a single word that represented a massive world wide craze that is still going on from the day of its conception to present day.
*sarcasm*
Don't be such a dick.
Sorry, I'm not a fan of Captain Obvious and his minions.
The things up for "rental" on this are SD to begin with. The type of stuff memories are made of. It`s full of shorts that everyone 25+ remembers from their childhood - shows from the 80s, kid`s songs, etc.
This is so interesting coming from a company who notoriously rejected HD and marketed their console as a casual gaming system for the whole family. One that managed to keep better traction than the Playstation 3 with it's plethora of better multimedia features. Now look! turns out the wii was a trojan horse and Nintendo is slowly taking up the apple approach. Now that it will be cheaper to stuff HD into the console and resell it. Before it would of cost more and placed it closer to the Xbox 360 in price, making the price advantage almost nullified. Of course the Xbox would still not of sold more in Japan but then that's another story all together. The high sales, I believe, can also be attributed to people who grew up on Nintendo, now busy living busy adult lives and just want to casually indulge in some remixes of simple gaming classics. Now they are pushing this to people who don't have time for T.V or games, which makes perfect sense because the Wii's game library isn't exactly incredible. You can now order T.V on demand when you get bored of the games.
I already have a room to wii in.
have any of you SEEN hulu or netflix on the wii? It's ugly and often feels like it's on the verge of failing (stuttering)...
Since when would I pay for content on the Wii if I can't even watch a 4 minute youtube video without the browser crashing from running out of memory??
Damn. Japan just seems to have tons of bandwidth.
I remember when people wanted a DVD player in this thing...
BuurrP!
