LaCie packs 2TB HDD, DLNA support into LaCinema Classic HD
LaCie's LaCinema Classic multimedia hard drive was a fine device, but if you're anything like us, you're never perfectly satisfied. Thus, we're stoked to see the outfit issuing a revamped version of the aforesaid device today, with the LaCinema Classic HD including up to 2TB of internal storage space, (optional) 802.11n WiFi and built-in DLNA server capabilities. As you'd expect, this sexy black block will stream multimedia from your Mac or PC onto your HDTV, and the included HDMI port (and cable) should ensure that transfers remain gorgeous. We're told that format support won't be an issue, and if you're a believer, you can get your pre-order in now for $249.99 (1TB). Rear shot is after the break.

I see what they did there.
Damn that looks sexy, my PS3 does a pretty good job of streaming, so is it worth the money for those few extra formats? Talking to you MKV, you beautiful b*tch, damn you and your nefarious ways.
You can easily convert a MKV to M2TS using TSMuxer, even on a Mac.
Your other choice is to use PS3 Media Server, which will convert on the fly. This works, but don't try to rewind!

would be nice if it could do bittorrent also..
@Streetfights
Sorry, but i just don't agree, putting p2p on here is a crappy move. People ought not steal music, movies and tv shows. Filmmakers and alot of people depend on people supporting their movies... look at how bad the music business is now. sorry, but you ought to rent stuff or buy legitimately.
An age old argument that can't be settled even on the Engadget comment system.
The music "industry" is the problem, not the torrents.
What a load of shite!?
"look at how bad the music business is now" - what are you talking about you nutter? P2P has affected the music industry how?
I know there is always someone coming up with stats that fight for piracy but one I've hard and believe is that the film business is actually benefiting from P2P movie downloads as a large proportion of people who download will then actually go and see the movie at the cinema and even buy the DVD/BluRay which they would never have done if they hadn't been able to download and watch it in the first place!
Get a grip people.

You can try and justify your piracy any which way you can, but it isn't helping artists, musicians and filmmakers. Supporting films, music and such through legitimate channels are the ONLY way you are supporting.
no that doesn't mean i stole the album, but ill buy a ticket when they come to town works. sorry, but i just don't buy that the music business is at fault. they have put the stuff up now legitimately, artists are actually getting fairer deals... so... time now to own up and stop stealing.
maybe the only way people will do the right thing is by being treatened by losing their broadband with a 3 strikes and you lose it type of situation. ie Sweden and soon France.
you can try to legitmize your stealing, but it is wrong no matter how you try to rationalize it.
Nice device. Been itching to replace my WHS build ever since I built it. (I know, it's a bad habit...but I'm always looking for something new!) However, the PS3 Media Server installed as a Service on my WHS makes it tough to replace.
Why would they include composite out connectors but not component?
iv seen these LaCie things IRL and they look NOTHING like the photoshop mockups you see above! think like a black iphone after its been between a 5 year old boys greasy hands for a week, thats what they look like! don't be fooled by the gloss and bling, its a lie!
That blue light that shines from the bottom is gimmicky in my opinion. I've seen in on other drives by these guys and it's really not that impressive nor purposeful. JMO (Just My Opinion)
Oh and the HMDI port almost seems photo-shopped into the image (the image of the back)
Do these devices play .mkv files or not? I have to admit I would be seriously tempted to buy one if they did.
@nachotech
Try this one:
www.popcornhour.com
I have one for about two years (model A-100).
It plays everything that you need (including MKV), and supports anyhard disk you want, plus torrent, plus several applications from the community (amule, httpd, ftpd)
I simply love that device.
@nachotech
According to the specs on the manufacturers website MKV is supported by this.

It is true, minimalism is key.
wdtv live all the way - cheaper, smaller, and you have the flexibility to add whatever external drive you want. Plus there's a fairly large community making custom firmware!
@pauly7
Any idea what that custom firmware can do?
Links please?
Thanks.
No optical out :( ? No buy.
@buskape - I think that's optical-out nestled right in there with the wonderfully archaic composite video outputs... if this is indeed an actual product shot, that is.
Yet again, no fire-wire.
Damn I just bought a WD TV Live a couple of days ago. Someone should compare both machines in a review. It seems like they both have their pros and cons. The Lacie has Wifi and is an all in one box but lacks some output features. The WD TV Live has customization and better output options but lacks wifi and doesnt look as nice as the lacie.
@stoopidgeenius
Hey there - do you use yours with a surround sounds system?
I want to get one but I need to know if will support THX sound output.
Thanks.
Don't feel bad. Lacie makes junk. Search for lacie failure and be prepared to read thousands (tens of thousands?) of stories about failures JUST after the one year warranty is up. Usually this is due to expiring circuit boards. There's a reason Seagate has 5 year warranties on their hard drives but only 1 year warranties on their hard drives if they are contained in Lacie enclosures.
Enjoy your WDTV Live.
Buy a PS3 and put PS3 media server on your media computer! $250 is not worth it for such a limited number of features.
