Nokia X6 coming to Finland and the UK this Friday, other countries soon
Nokia's just confirmed on its official blog that the X6 will hit shelves in Finland and the UK starting next week, with other countries to follow soon after. After hearing a while back that the touchscreen, Comes With Music-lover would be shipping around November 12th -- well, we didn't want to falsely get anyone's hopes up again. But now that the word is official, we can all sit back and behold the beauty that is the X6 -- with its 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera, and 32GB of onboard memory. The S60 (that's the 5th edition) device will be available in Nokia stores this Friday, retailing for £449 (about $742) free of contract.

I think I'm willing to give my two e71's for this.
Good luck to those who take the plunge. I hope it's better than my N97. S60 5th edition, even with N97 firmware 2.0, isn't very good.
@Unbiased Yeah...just look at the Satio =P
It's phones like this that make we wish I was with a GSM carrier.
Symbian is dead weight for Nokia smartphones. They should only use it for s40 dumbphones. They need to transition their high-end models to Maemo now, before they become even less relevant.
@Titanium Man Im sure anyone looking @ the numbers will agree with you.
Oh wait....Thats Nokia with the majority global market share? :s
I could've sworn you said "before they become even less relevant."
Munk:
Market share is meaningless in a discussion about the merits of a product. There are very good products that don't sell well and there are lesser ones that do.
I firmly believe that S60 and Symbian are not only holding Nokia back but they may ultimately lead to its fall from the top of the handset mountain.
@Unbiased: Your points are valid if the bleeding edge represented the mass market. It does not.
Most American blogs do not bother to research that S60 is a UI layer on top of Symbian. NOT the OS.
Symbian knows this and have had a road map in place since Nokia turned into an open source foundation last year.
You'll see a complete UI/UX change in Symbian^3 in early 2011.
In terms of features, functions and value for money the vast majority of people still continue to choose Symbian and Nokia phones. Is it THE BEST? Absolutely not but then again nothing is perfect.
Symbian has lost market share over the last year but its still more than the next 3 OS's combined! + look at the #'s closely. Nokia has sold more devices every quarter than the last year. They have lost market share because the market has actually grown and component shortages which they predicted mid-2008.
Also note that every quarter the ONLY manufacturer thats consistently grown market share over the last year is RIM/Blackberry who have continually climbed at 17% whilst Apple/Iphone has been stagnant at 10% (Android has only recently seen gains and as more devices come out it will surely strip away).
What do the numbers tell you? Its not about the flash for the global majority, its about the functions and despite global recessions Nokia/Blackberry have continued to sell more smartphones (and dumbphones for nokia) than ever before.
the bloddy thing is that apparently it runs on a 434 mhz ARM processor
(according to gsmarena)
if you believe them this means that this phone runs the same cpu as the n97, n86, n97 mini, 5800 xpress music, e72
they should step up their game, to let's say a 1ghz snapdragon pls?
E72 has a 600Mhz processor, and so are some of the newer Nokias. But S50v5 devices needs a bump in RAM too.
i love sex
@(Unverified) I'm guessing you're always alone when you're having it.... Lol.
unfortunately, yes. i married my hand.
Lol.
@(Unverified) Its hard to argue with that, up ranked.
And you remember it fondly, right?
@incognito sure
3.2" display Nokia? SRSLY!? you have the HD2 running around with a 4.3" display,Omnia II with 3.7" AMOLED, Satio 3.5" and 12mpx cam, Xperia X10 4", Idou 3.5" 12mpx and xenon flash, iphone with 3.5" and the Droid coming in at 3.8" yet you offer a 3.2" and 5mpx cam at that price tag? -_-
@Eternity I have to agreee. Nokia keeps saddling their phones with last years technology. The only reason they've managed to hold on as the # purveyor of cellphones is because they've covered the market from super cheap to ridiculously pricey. We can keep hope alive that they'll ditch Symbian and either make Maemo or Android their default OS.
@Eternity & CJ,
3.2" is not that bad. Btw, its price will definitely fall a lot before Christmas.
Just look at N900, if N900 is selling for USD 480 @ Amazon, i see a much cheaper unlocked price tag for this phone after few weeks.
And then, it will become the cheapest available smartphone in its own category with similar specs, just like Nokia 5800XM was and still is.
It may also be free with contracts,ofcz not here in US, but elsewhere.
Honestly I don't know wtf is going at Nokia but they are going to keep losing market share if they don't bring on the heat soon. The only reason I'm getting the N900 is because of the OS and I trust Nokia's build quality, stability and firmware support over any other brand but otherwise the hardware *spec wise* isn't all that impressive. As a matter of fact I know I'm gonna resell it in 6 months and get something that satiates my need to have the best technology available at the time for my $$. The technology is here but this company is seriously slacking!
a) The price includes a years ala carte music service.
b) All the phones that you've mentioned are something the geeks will get excited about while the 5800xm and (presumably) this will out sell all of them combined.
c) Big screens sound cool but impractical for most people especially outside the US where people are used to using phones one handed.
d) Nokia can and should be performing better. Saying that we are ready to loose market share while we concentrate on our services and getting out back end together for the future is not good enough.
e) Nothing personal but,
" As a matter of fact I know I'm gonna resell it in 6 months and get something that satiates my need to have the best technology available at the time for my $$", that says more about your insecurities and deficiencies that you have to satisfy yourself by continually purchasing devices because you believe them to have "the best technology" rather than look at what they can do for you and the value they provide.
Its great to lust for the best and every human should have a right to demand better. Heck it is as tech enthusiasts that we are on Engadget!
However what difference does incremental upgrades make over the high premium you pay?? Think about it.
a. Agreed. Kudos to Nokia for that! It's like the Anti iTunes
b. Not here in the states where the only way Droid became the number 1 contender against the iPhone is by ads actually telling the ignorant masses what it did better, most people can't tell one thing from the other but they KNOW display size for their money and good marketing.
c.The iphone is 4.5" x 2.4" x 0.48" in size with a 3.5" display. Judging by it's popularity and the huge surge of sales in Europe as of late, this means that Theoretically any phone with at most a 4.4" display is acceptable in the hands, assuming they don't have a bezel taking up space needlessly. (which is why I reserved the .1")
d.Agreed
e.I like living on the bleeding edge because I'm a power user and I actually *creatively* use every single feature my phones have in my every day life. I also find new apps to squeeze out even more functionality. I'm not overwhelmed by crazy specs and a laundry list of technology. I don't just do basic texting, email, syncing, browsing and talking. And when I see a few $400-600 phones I take the best I can get for the price, keep it till the warranty expires, then upgrade. I like my devices "Open", speedy, feature packed, stable, and aesthetically pleasing. The less proprietary crap the better. Only Nokia offers this, Android is in at a close second but Google doesn't make their own hardware, which concerns me. Or maybe I should be happy? the G1 looked like child's play and I think google designed it.
PS: I can't wait till they make a phone that does your laundry, powers on your car, puts your kids to bed, and has a built in Taser for when somebody tries to steal it from you. ;)
@Eternity
Idou = Satio, second is later name
Nokia Comes with Music, Satio comes with Fastport.
Though I'd take $200 discount instead of Music any day now.
@Eternity you miss the point of the target market for this phone - read my comment below.
@Eternity
You can't have a 4" display and a pocket friendly phone.
Some of us like compact phones. The iPhone, for example, is too wide to be carried in a small jeans pocket.
$742 is insane for a nokia phone. Try $200 and we have a deal
@(Unverified) Its been said time and again but here it goes......These are Engadget's prices based on direct conversion. The US price would be closer to 500$.
In the 449 you also get an "All you can eat" music service for a year, i.e download as much music as you want and the price is built in to the phone + you get to keep those tracks after the time period ends.
Pretty good deal imho.
@ is that unlocked or subsidized?
unlocked
Its the unlocked, unsubsidized price you morons
how is it that Nokia does not get that people ...
DO NOT WANT FAT PHONES...?????
put the frickers on a diet would ya?
Its good, but not good enough. VERY LITTLE motivation for me to upgrade from my 5800. I think i'll pass, and maybe wait till the 12megapixel nokia hd phone comes out with symbian^2 and real processing power!
TIme for me to upgrade to a HTC Hero I guess (Import, not Sprint)...
Don't go the SE way. Aren't they having an, hm, economic downturn?
i think most of you are missing the point. this isnt supposed to be an evolutionary phone along their product lineup. this is basically just in response to peoples main gripes about the 5800. would-be customers complained that they wanted a capacitive touch screen and in-built memory. nokia actually listened to people and then released this.
personally i think the "mainstream" people who have the preconceived notion that all capacitive screens are better than resistive are in for a huge disappointment. most s60.5 apps were designed with the 5800 and n97 in mind, so its going to be a bitch for you guys to click small buttons, text, etc. i can actually think of many apps that you possibly wont even be able to use on this phone because of that.
capacitive screens are less precise. dont believe me? download spiral defense for android and then think of how much easier it would be to play with a stylus or your nails.
I guess you've never played with the Samsung i8910 (S60v5 with capacitive touch) - it's way more usable than the N97.
@(Unverified)
i have an i8910 and i have no problems with the capacitive touchscreen, everything is big and easy to press
no, i havent used an i8910. come to think of it ive never owned a sammy.
anyway, i use my nails and prefer resistive.
but my main point was to the people who were complaining that this phone doesnt have x, y, or z enhancements. personally i think this would be an absolutely great phone. but im all up in nokia's maemo sauce right now.
To all the Nokia/Symbian moaners/groaners out there...
I've played with the X6 and it's one of the nicest Symbian phones from Nokia ever (and I've reviewed most recent Nseries, Eseries and Xpressmusic devices):
- It's not meant to be a high-end phone like the N97 or N900, but a mid-end device like the 5800
- It's small (optimized for one-hand use) and it's a lot thinner in person
- It's the same screen size as the 5800 and N97 mini, but it's capacitive touch (first one from Nokia)
- It's the same camera as the N97, N97 mini and N900 (ie. best in class)
- Don't be fooled by the price; you can be sure it's going to reach $350 within weeks
- There's 32 GB built-in but no micro-SD card slot and there's no physical keyboard
- There's a bunch of UI and performance improvements over N97 firmware v2.0
Here's my hands on: http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2009/09/15/nokia-x6-and-nokia-n97-mini-hands-on/
so nokia continues to make my dream-phones. its a pity that they are very frustrating with this crap of an os symbian.
@(Unverified) Let's face it, you don't like S60 UI - Symbian has little to do with that.
That offer is ridiculously good for all music lovers out there. I mean - basically all you can eat subscription on music, and you get to keep all that you have downloaded, even when the subscription is over. 32 gigs holds quite a lot of songs. If you would fill up say, your iPhone, the total cost would be tens of thousands of dollars.
@(Unverified) 32GB isnt the limit. You get to download music to one PC and sky is the limit, or hard disk size for the music.
@Ike Turner They are working on it. That's why we haven't seen many high ends Symbian touch phones from Nokia (and no E-series touch phone yet). I personally think that they might be skipping Symbian^2 too and go straight to Symbian^3 which already eliminates many usability issues like double-tapping. I just hope that Nokia (and other manufacturers) would offer Symbian^4 as upgrade when it ready.
@Ike Turner
Yup, this just might be the best looking phone ever.
I'm not a Nokia fanboy or anything, just calling it how I see it.
