Besides
linking up with Google,
TiVo has some other big news coming out of its third quarter results, first that it lost less money than expected, a mere $6.7 million instead of the $8-10 predicted. Bigger than that for UK denizens, TiVo has cut a long-term deal with
Virgin Media to put its software and UI on the cable company's next gen set-top boxes, including access to online features, due in 2010. On this side of the Atlantic, besides resuming marketing in New England, the company's work with Comcast will continue, including a tru2way mention, while Cox and RCN also deploy boxes throughout next year. The future for TiVo? Expect
Best Buy's digital video delivery store to find its way on the box soon, while the company also expands beyond just DVRs expecting to create "some very interesting product opportunities for our next generation TiVo products and services." All that online content means the old peanut isn't long for this world, with development of a new "keyboard remote control" under way, we just can't wait to see if it's beaming commands
to any new DVRs at CES.
Tivo the magic little box that allows me to record two shows at the same time in HD. I love this thing.
As an RCN customer I'm really excited about having my fairly capable but limited Motorola DVR replaced with a TiVo HD.
TiVo has this great potential to break out something amazingly next-gen (actual next-gen tech, not just calling the next crappy iteration next-gen), but instead they tease us with morbidly slow & unusable UI betas that don't run on current Motorola hardware.
The sad thing is that TiVo's UI is badly outdated, but it's still the best thing around if you want to steer clear of HTPCs.
i can't tell you how exciting this is.
virgin media's boxes at present are like some form of user torture. slow to use and make no sense.
In what world am I going to pay one more monthly fee to use a shitty DVR that hasn't changed significantly in 5 years?
It's a shame Virgin have such a limited selection of HD channels. They don't carry any of the Sky HD channels, which Sky understandably keep to their own Sky+ HD box. The lack of channels would keep me from switching back to Virgin.
I've heard rumblings about new Tivo hardware. It's supposedly much smaller and noticeably faster. No idea when it'll come out. No idea what features it'll have.
@(Unverified) As the same rumors have been floating around for a couple years now I would classify it as vaporware :)
TiVo is the biggest rip off in history.
Tivo really needs to update their whole user experience. It's so 2001-esque. Time to get it into the HD world with modern day information and social features.
Time for some updating Tivo! Your stretched SD interface circa 1999 isn't cutting it anymore.
I'm perfectly happy with my TiVo HD. If you've seen the competition out there, they're a decade behind. If it works, what is there to fix? Bump the resolution for people with 1080p, get some Hulu support, stick a faster processor in there, put in a terabyte drive and we're good to go.
While I have a TivoHD and do enjoy it, I have to say I'm rather disappointed with the product. The hardware is overpriced for what you get. The monthly subscription fee is way too high, yet offers little in return. The UI is archaic at best. While it's nice they offer regular software updates, they don't tackle the easy low lying fruit.
Why can't I see what's recording in the program guide? Tivo's been around for how long and they still don't do this? My old ReplayTV had this feature.
With the UI they've had forever, why are they only NOW getting around to developing some sort of wireless keyboard interface?
How about more modern hardware? Larger drives, maybe even hot swappable expansion, utilize more advance compression to store more on the drives, tru2way, built in wifi, etc.
On a more basic level, a more up to date and ACCURATE program guide would be nice.
@(Unverified) All the above in addition to rebuilding the UI to take advantage of HD screens.
