Nokia N900 now shipping in the land of Ford freedom trucks
Love to tinker and tweak your smartphone? Find running beta apps a challenge, not a burden? Then you'll be happy to hear that Nokia's N900 running Maemo 5 is now shipping in the US, a week later than the press release suggested. This Cortex-A8 phone with 32GB of on-board storage is ripe with potential and the perfect holiday gift for grandma as long as she's comfortable dropping into the X Terminal for the occasional "rm -R /home/user/.microfeed" command. It's still listed for $649 unlocked from Nokia direct though that price will be dropping soon enough.

Thomas Ricker does not represent the whole of Engadget. Had Nilay Patel written this, it might have had a tone more to your liking.
Translation: Get your facts straight, and direct your ire to the proper source.
"Nokia should stop sponsoring the Engadget show, seeing as how you shit on them so frequently."
i couldnt believe that nokia sponsored it! i was floored the first time i read that. actually still am every time i think of it.
Ever since Nokia assisted the Islamic Iranian government by supplying cell phone jammers to stop the protesters from texting and calling each other, I have decided to boycott their products and services.
@poematik14:........what a terrible terrible loss for them.
@poematik14
To save yourself from becoming a fundamentalist yourself, you should look into those facts of yours. A cellphone jammer is extremely easy to make. Any moron with an EE degree and a few spare parts can make one. And on top of that, I doubt that the government would need to jam signals when they could just shut off the towers.
On that note, if you want to keep from being a hypocrite, you probably should also boycott Intel, AMD, Sony-Ericson, and anyone else that might have supplied any equipment to the Iranian government.
@jaek I knew I shouldn't have brought up politics in a gadget blog. You guys can barely comprehend talking to girls let alone discuss world issues.
Wow, look at all the N900 fan boys. You guys sure are so cute (and hilarious) when you get all cranky for no good reason.
@omegahelix Hard to be fanboys when half of us haven't played with it, but it sure is promising.
@(Unverified)
when boys play with it?
(!)
what?
keyboard looks tiny, i got Flinstone hands
If the Dell ship dates turn out to be accurate then the MIR is no good, it has to be post marked by January 8th (or thereabouts).
I ordered my N900 on Oct 14th - received a notice that it was "preparing to ship" last Friday - and it was just delivered today! Wheee!
@PlymouthRockHudson DETAILS.
@PlymouthRockHudson
I hate your guts with all my heart.
Nothing personal.
@PlymouthRockHudson Did you order this through Nokia? Initial thoughts?
@ShotWithAnSLR I ordered this through Nokia - so I am not getting the savings that came up later with Amazon - though I will get the $50 gift-card thingy when I register with Ovi.
No impressions as of yet - I had to go out this afternoon for pre-Thanksgiving errands. I won't really get to play with this until late tonight. BUT - it's not as bulky as I thought it would be. I had an original iphone (unlocked & jailbroken), then the MyTouch, and now the N900. The N900 feels solid, slips into my pocket and I don't really notice a difference.
This does not seem right. I ordered this phone about 1 month ago when it first came up for preorder and my DELL.COM order still states (IN PRODUCTION) what the hell is going on here??
I came from tmo to AT&T for the iPhone when my contract is up the n900 shall be mine!
ordered mine today off dell... talked to a rep and asked about shipping and she booked on me! i know one things for sure, skyblaze better be gettin' his n900 before christmas or SOMEBODY's gonna be on the floor pleadin for their manhood to be spared. anger's BLAZIN', ya digg... we consumers/maemo fans/gadget enthusiats spent too much to be put on some crap waiting list till february...
...and whats with the nokia hate in the article? From what ive read and seen on youtube this thing is miles ahead of that fruit phone. Like come on. Beta? Really???
...nerd rage has subsided. slightly.
@skyblaze sorry to burst ur bubbly blaze but if you ordered it today you're not getting it this year. Period!.
I know people who ordered last week from Amz/Newegg & Dell once the $480 deal came back and all have gotten dates of 25Dec or later. People who've ordered in this week are getting Feb 09 dates so best of luck with that!
The flagships in NY/Chi town have them in stores but are only selling it to those who's names are high on the preorder lists (for a $200 premium of course!)
I got mine today and yes it is without a doubt the best phone available on the market today. Anyone who says otherwise has clearly not used it or have some weird obsession with devices that dont have high res screens, cant multitask effectively, is not dependent on a piece of bloatware to effectively manage applications.
If I read a single post saying that it does not have built in car integration or lacks 1000's of apps then i say fuck off and do your homework.
@The Great Powerful Oz
Then you should join in the discussion here where it is being ripped a new asshole by a guy who's had it for a few days.

I'm sure the Maemo enthusiasts there would appreciate your positive feedback in countering him.
@Malkmus
I think that guy has more of a problem with nokia in general than the phone itself, however after reading the first comment I thought that the poster knows nothing of linux and has serious issues with direction of anger towards nokia (maybe the roller broke on his 7110).
One commentor posted that he has done nothing but complain about nokia and s60 for the past year, destroying most threads.
I have not experienced half of the bugs that he has mentioned.
However I agree with him that he is an idiot as he can't work out how to use the word suggestions.
If there wasn't already 24 pages of comments I would tell him to download a manual and read it, though it looks like he might not have the mental capacity to handle such a task.
@The Great Powerful Oz: Haha. Yeah, I've been wondering where "word"/"ieye""Paul a Chappel" et all has gone too. Maybe he hasnt been able to get around the redesign! or maybe he changed his name yet again.......hmmm....who's been trolling here!?
Btw, where exactly did u get your device from? Retail via nokia? or online preorder?
------
@Malkmus:, As I replied to your earlier posts, the guy has interesting points but none of his experiences have been shared by the dozens of people around the web/globe who have been using and writing about the device for the past 2 months.
@Munk
Your right we must identify the new threat to all that is sane and pure.
Got mine from nokia direct, preordered it last monday, got it today.
Payed for express delivery but it beats royalmail.
@The Great Powerful Oz
Wait, you guys aren't REALLY gonna take the word of some douche iPhone owner ripping the N900 without any video evidence or at least pics are you? I literally jacked this phone at the Nokia store and wouldn't let anyone touch it for a few hours and thought it was great. I've also read most of the reviews out there by independent bloggers and I didn't hear much complaints.
@The Great Powerful Oz: So ure in Aus or the UK?
I know the UK (and some EU countries) have had it delayed to to the FM transmitter and legal reasons) so I'm guessing ure down-under?
How much did you pay for it?
@The Great Powerful Oz
You have one already? You are going to make a grown man cry; or at least very envious
@Munk
british actually, £500 direct from nokia and there are no problems with the transmitter.
also got 50 quidco
@Gary Olson
i up rank you for honnesty
@The Great Powerful Oz Thats contrary to every story I've read around but its great that the device is shipping in the UK as well.
*Gulp!* @ the price though! (Thats what $900 us?)
Hope you find it worth it! :P.
@Munk
32Gb Iphone 3gs sim free unlocked on play.com is £849.
how much is that in USD about $1400.
@The Great Powerful Oz
i can just picture u opening it with a friend...
"We get signal."
-"What?"
"Main screen turn on."
-"It's you!"
@The Great Powerful Oz I meant in regards to the us pricing. 480/650 vs 900!
Hello Thomas @ Engadget
Could you please stop posting brainfarts about a mobile device you're completely clueless about?
Thanks.
-Thomas @ Home (very happy with a N900 since Amsterdam)
@(Unverified) You mean this production N900 I've been using for over a week?
lol thomas
as of about 10 minutes ago, newegg has pulled any sign of the n900 from their site. Searching "n900" in their search box only yields the additional battery for the n900. Hopefully this means they've pulled down the page to update the status from 11/30/09 release to "now shipping"
@johnnyclem
no, because it was sold out.
@va jj Why would they pull the product page though?
@johnnyclem
pulled it to jack up the price back to 649.
Give it to me!
Just got my shipping confirmation from Amazon.
I like that "land of ford freedom and trucks" As for the post, good memory, a hefty amount of storage 32GB + 16GB external micro SD - qwerty keyboard - 5MP camera .. Quad Band. :D
Ovi Maps instead of Google Maps?

Its good to see Nokia finally release a new breed of their N series, I just hope it won't turn out to be another "joe" phone.
Just cancelled my order through Dell (can't get the MIR since phone won't ship until february) and ordered it through Nokia ($569.99 -$50.00 MIR).
Could any one tell me if Amazon has started shipping?
