Korean 3D television broadcasts in Full HD just weeks away
With LG predicting a 3D television market in excess of 30 million units by 2012 and Samsung busily promoting its related world's firsts, you'd better believe that these powerful South Korean "chaebols" have their government's full support when it comes to delivering 3D content. Just today the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) announced its drive to start beaming 3D broadcasts in Full HD quality sometime in 2010 -- licensing begins in January with first broadcasts expected mid-year. Unlike those 3D satellite broadcasts tested in Japan and the UK, Korea will deliver its 3D content through its terrestrial networks. Of course, Korea's pay-TV providers want in on the action too, with CJ HelloVision set to offer 3D content through its video-on-demand offerings in the next "week or two." CJ HelloVision will initially target about 300 households with plans to extend the service to 1,000 homes by 2012. Viewers will need yet another set-top box to view 3D content likely limited to "cartoons" at first. Pricing has not been set and it's entirely possible that 3D VoD titles will be free at first in order to build momentum and to ensure viewer lock-in of the all important child demographic.

Are there any studies on how much 3D stuff could potentially kill your eyes? If I watched 3D TV like I watched regular TV when I was a kid, I swear my eyes would be even worse than they are now. All that refocusing and straining has to do something...
No, because, if anything forcing people's eyes to focus at things at different depths is better than focusing on something which is constantly at the same depth (i.e. regular 2D screens). Of course it's not really at different depths, our minds just think that it is, so it might not be any better, but at worst it's as bad for your eyes as a regular 2D screen.
Methinks your symptoms are due to vestibulocochlear and visual stimuli not matching up and causing, basically, is motion sickness.
While I can't match the first reply i'd like to add.
A seperate issue would seem likely with extended use (glasses). That the brain's presentation of the world to you could shift. Example upside glasses or simply coloured gel held up against the eyes for time. It's an issue with full immersion VR as well with subjects describing being overwhelmed by all the dust in the air or having flashbacks where the world looks rendered. I read that stuff back in 93 don't know of a web reference.
Anyway, LCD shutters or whatever will have some halo effect that will increase with repeated long exposure.
Let's watch the Koreans experiment on themselves. Maybe pikachu fits all over again

pretty good 3D blog/resource

'Anyway, LCD shutters or whatever will have some halo effect that will increase with repeated long exposure.'
Please provide some evidence for your assertation. I've used LCD shutter glasses for some years without any problems. Of course, if you adjust the 'focus' incorrectly they could potential cause eyestrain - just as wearing incorrect glasses, or sitting too far or too close to a monitor will do.
Also, your comment about the brain shifts is rather badly thought out. If looking at 2d objects all the time on 2d monitors doesn't make the world look flat, then logically looking at 3d objects would, at most, make the world look 3d.Theres a large difference between this and the accomodation that occurs when you wear tinted glasses or inverting glasses for a period.
Lmao about the cigarette haha that killed me.

no pun intended

i lold too :D camel ftw!
and meanwhile in Greece we are still struggling to get rid of analog transmissions :-P
@AnastasiosAntoniosToulkeridis
you have wonderfull sea down there... who needs TV
3-D to me is the same gimmick as motion controls. I just want to watch tv dangit. I don't want 3-D and I don't want to have to wave my arms to relax and play a game.
@ZeRoCo0L "Now, get out of my lawn, damn kids!"
Sweet but yeah it could hurt your eyes indeed!
3D has always been a bit of a gimmick. Not sure I'd want to get another box and have to wear the glasses for this. Sorry, but FAIL.
OMG, Joe Camel, how are you doing. Heard you were layed off. Didn't you do a short gig as a moose for LL Bean? Guess you had to go off shore for work. That's a shame man. Take care.
Third Magazine which is a 3D industry blog, goes after the Avatar 3D hype..

I've been playing with an app called 3D Camera on my iPhone, and while it's fun, it's mostly a gimmick. Most of the 3D movies I've seen are also just okay. In most cases, there's no need for them to be in 3D at all. Not sure where I think 3D is going, but the technologies are going to have to seriously improve.
@Vanillacide Oh sweet, didn't know that, thanks for the heads up.
Been thinking about getting Sky HD, this might push me over the edge, not saying I'm a 3D fanboy, I just want to try it out a bit more.
What's with the misleading title?
"broadcats just weeks away"
later in the post
"first broadcasts expected mid 2010"
Yeah, be picky that is weeks, my 50th birthday is weeks away, about 1816 weeks away...
@FORDY sorry thats *broadcasts*... im not talking about any abnormally wide cats :P
Limited to cartoons at first?
Good to see what kind of advertising they have in mind to go with the kids shows. Remember kids, smoking is cool!
Yes, let me put on those 3D glasses and start behaving just like the douche in the picture.
Well... um, 3 guesses at which entertainment industry stands to benefit the most from quality 3D technology...
While the broadcasts might be weeks away, shameless product placement is here today!
3D _games_ are where the future of 3d is at. Movies in 3d can be nice, but are not really essential. Games have these advantages over movies:
1) Usually only 1 person plays a PC game at once, so you only need 1 set of glasses.
2) The plane 'focus' when playing 3D games can be adjusted to suit the user, thus maximizing the 3D effect while minimizing eyestrain (movies focus is set at filming/post production time).
3) Converting an existing 3d engine game to 3D graphics is trivial.
Pushes like this for 3D TV and movies can only be good however for driving down the price of this technology and forcing faster improvements to it. Unfortunately I can see there are going to be some big format wars fought over the issue which I hope do not derail the tech's potential.
Since 10 years a Canadian company is working on a 3D TV system but without using 3D glasses.
It is a very well advance system. "INTERNATIONAL DATACASTING AND SENSIO TECHNOLOGIES SELECTED FOR FIRST LIVE 3D BROADCAST OF MAJOR SOCCER EVENT"
Ottawa and Montreal, October 27, 2009 – International Datacasting Corporation (TSX:IDC), a world leader in distribution of multimedia data, and SENSIO Technologies Inc. (“SENSIO”) (TSX Venture Exchange Inc.: SIO), the inventor of the SENSIO® 3D technology, announced that their solution for 3D live events was selected and deployed by Mexico’s Televisa for the historic first public broadcast of a live soccer game.

Joe Camel? Newly arrived from the 80's? Actually, he's just making a guest appearance today here in the west. He lives and works full time in South Korea, where they have an epidemic smoking problem, resulting in thousands of deaths a year. Probably he moonlights in India and China as well.
So I wonder how much his company paid LG for this product placement?
I don't want 3D either. I wear glasses and it a pain to have to wear 3D glasses.
I also get headaches wearing them so why would I want this crap on my TV?
Was just interviewed in Seoul for Sky 3D on Dec 13th. Was a little disconcerting trying to look at two lenses at once!
People are being sceptical when having to buy additional hardware equipment in order to view video content. Indeed the video quality is a lot improved and the experience is great as Avatar confirmed. We shall see if the 3D technology will be adopted by the masses, the glasses are also cutting from the emotions when it s about watching a movie with your friends. An article talking more about this is: http://www.thehdstandard.com/streaming-technology/3d-television-technology/
