Intel's desktop roadmap leaked, with faster i5 and i7, introduction of i3
Just when you thought you had enough gigahertz in your life, along come the folks at Impress to blow the doors off Intel's upcoming crop of desktop processors. In the highly detailed charts there's wild talk of a low-powered "S" version of Core i5 that lowers the chip from 95W to 82W, a new Core i3 line that strips out the Turbo Boost technology and dips into budget-priced territory, and word that at the time of this roadmap at least the Core i9 "Gulftown" chip isn't slated for until Q2 of next year. We could probably bore you all day with the details, so hit up the source link for all the sordid details before we get ourselves too worked up.

They should trim their proc line.
AMD better catch up, because I want to see some cheap intel prices!!!!!
so my core i5 750 is already outdated?!? :(
@RageTek hate to say it but it was outdated when it came out. it is just a software limited i7 860 with hyper threading turned off.
the i7 920 (or a similarly-priced/feaured i7) is not making it to the next round?
@rickster I'm sure the 920 is dead. It's too expensive for what you get.
But the two right hand columns show there still are Socket 1366 i7s, there will be some replacement for the 920, either a 925 or a 930. Either will probably have a much larger turbo boost (like the 8xxs have) than the 920 does.
@spin cycle
According to the chart above, a 925 would be an extreme series processor and cost upwards of $999. Not something that would replace the 920.
I've heard some rumors of a 930 that is meant to replace the 920. I don't know about turbo boost, but it's supposed to have a high clock speed to compete with the 860.
@sparkplug72 Oh yeah, I didn't really look at that part.
Wow, if the top i7 is $999, how much is the i9? Yowza.
@spin cycle
If it is anything like it is now with the recent introduction of the low end i5 @ 200$~ and the low end i7(LGA1366) @ 300$~ then the low end i9 would be at the 400 to 500 mark, assuming there will be a low end i9. Or further push down the i7/i5 market to a cheaper place and then sell the i9 at the current i7 (LGA1366) price point. Just what I think heheh
@rickster the chart has a "-$5xx" so I assume that means that i7 8x0 and 9x0 series will have several models with the most expensive costing up to $599
Gimme i9 already.
@Neros Fiddle
I'm looking forward to an i9 but it better be over 3GHz and intel better have support for USB 3.0, SATA 3 and PCIE 3 by that point!
@Neros Fiddle
Sure! Just mail me an arm and a leg and I'll ship it to you :)
soon as they put this on a smartphone im happy- it will fly! goodbye, snapdragon, tegra, ARM-8!
x/d? LOL XD
- Is it just me or why cant CPU`s be simpler/ fairer to the normal consumers or even us enthusiast. People are going to have to start selling body parts to keep up grading the ways things are going.
- Also GPU`s are killing Cpu`s when it comes to processing speed and cores why cant we just use them in freestanding systems, come on Nvidia and ATi build your own systems.
@TheNorse Nvidia has their own system. it's a small supercomputer. And the reason that the graphics cards are so much more powerful is because of 2 reasons. 1. They have a more limited range of operations they have to do compared to a processor, so the hardware is able to be more optimized for those specific operations. and 2. Everything that is done on a graphics card is done is parallel. If it is working in a game, it will break the screen up into a bunch of smaller screens and perform the operations needed to be done to each of those screens and then combine them back together. If it is encoding video, an i7 is able to do 8 frames at the same time(1 per core) and on a gpu it is able to do 256 frames at the same time(on high end cards). So it's not that they are faster, it's that they can do more at once.
I'd Like to see these updated processors get to the Macs (especially mobile version for Macbooks and Macbook Pros :P)
Does anyone think Apple's been waiting...
(Why the hell am I unverified? I'm supposed to be Fan-of-iTech)
Christ. Makes my T8700 Core 2 Duo laptop seem like garbage. And I haven't even received it from UPS yet.
Core i3 for my HTPC!!! Where's that Ceton Multi-Channel Cable TV Card... Hope they land at the same time, heh...
And I just ordered a core i7 860 rig. Well I've been procrastinating buying a new rig for 5+ years. So I think I made the right choice.
i hope can make the price down for other intel pors

Does Intel still have a chip branded celeron?
I'm stiking to my q660 t'ill i see a real reason to upgrade...
My next upgrade is a better gpu, the 8800gt is starting to be a little weak, but it's going to be fine for atleast another year, probably 2.
Than at that time, i might also get a ssd, if the price, capacity, and preformence gain is really worth it...
The q6600 is staying until i see a real reason to upgrade. I've had it for almost 2 years now, and it's still as good as the day i bought it, software doesn't need anything more than it 2 years ago. With the increase of netbooks, software is getting lighter to. windows 7 runs faster than vista,
Also , i can clock my q6600 back up to 3.8ghz when ever i feel like it, but for now it's fast enough.
This is ridiculous. the upcoming i9 is SO beyond any requirements anyone has. Unless you're running Crysis, Maya 3D and then high-demand audio software simultaneously, this is just unnecessary. I can barely afford a used Q6600 G0 in this economy. Wtf are they trying to do to us? AMD is letting us down too by not providing Intel with any competition. The prices will be as high as Intel wants until AMD can challenge them.
Dark times.
@Dylan
Consumers? Not at all
Prosumer? Possibly
Servers and Virtualization? Definitely
@Dylan
If you are doing HD video editing (720p, 1080p) you can't have enough core or CPU power.
I know that AMD is generally slower but I feel like they go out of date slower because they update so infrequently. Maybe its just me though :)

*smokes a doobie* You just answered your own query. It's like a paradox, man! *puts doobie down* Yeah, man! *blows some smoke* *chuckles* *sighs*
