DALLAS, November 30, 2009 -
AT&T* and LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A., Inc., today announced the LG eXpo will be available online beginning December 7. Featuring the first 1 GHz processor in the United States, the LG eXpo allows business professionals to meet their demanding data sharing needs while on the go. Available exclusively for AT&T customers, the handset will be compatible with AT&T's High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 Mbps technology, which provides a considerable speed boost to the nation's fastest 3G network. The LG eXpo is the first device in North America to support an optional integrated pico projector. The LG Mobile Projector snaps onto the back of the device and allows users to share presentations, slideshows and even online videos straight from their mobile phone. Weighing only 1.8 ounces and small enough to fit into the palm of your hand, the LG mobile projector provides users with powerful new technology in a compact design, featuring a projection distance as far as eight feet "LG eXpo adds to our growing portfolio of smartphones that operate on the latest upgrade to our 3G network and offer customers a great choice," said Michael Woodward, vice president, Mobile Phone Portfolio, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. "As we move to HSPA 7.2 technology, it is crucial to provide our customers innovative and future-proof smartphones." With the upgrade to HSPA 7.2 technology, AT&T continues its investments to deliver the nation's fastest 3G network.
AT&T plans to deploy HSPA 7.2 initially in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Miami by the end of the year. The company plans to deploy HSPA 7.2 in 25 of the nation's 30 largest markets by the end of 2010, and to reach about 90 percent of its existing 3G network footprint with HSPA 7.2 by the end of 2011. LG eXpo also eliminates the need for pin codes and passwords with the exclusive "Smart Sensor" fingerprint recognition from AuthenTec, which delivers a new level of added smart and personal security unlike any other mobile phone in the market. AT&T is the first to offer U.S. subscribers a smartphone that leverages the features and functions of a smart sensor. The Smart Sensor complements the touchscreen user interface of the eXpo by also providing precise cursor control for text editing, 4-way menu navigation, and AuthenTec's unique turbo-scroll feature for rapid browsing of long emails, contact lists or websites. The LG eXpo is loaded with Windows Mobile® 6.5 Professional to help power users stay more connected with email, calendar and Microsoft® Office Mobile. The phone's projection feature allows users to display Web pages, documents, photos and videos on the go. "LG eXpo is the perfect balance of mobile innovation and design" said Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of product strategy and marketing for LG Mobile Phones. "Enabling users to meet their professional and personal computing needs from the palm of their hands, LG eXpo makes on-the-go communication an effortless luxury."
Boasting a 3.2-inch external touchscreen with 16M color, LG eXpo features a sophisticated slider design with a full size QWERTY keypad. For the dynamic multi-tasker, LG eXpo provides users with powerful functionality that supports an RSS Viewer, Podcast and aGPS. In addition to a crystal clear 5.0 megapixel camera with built-in auto flash, LG eXpo can support up to a 16GB removable microSD memory card for premium music and photo storage. windows 6.5 phone with a projector for $199...thats not a bad price at all but ill skip
@maximusfilms its 199 for the phone plus 179 additional for the projector
@maximusfilms
Actually... keep reading. The thing costs $199 WITHOUT the projector. They expect you to shell out the price of another phone ($179) for that luxury.
Any clue on whether this will use a proprietary interface or the stock WinMo 6.5 interface?
probably the stock + att bloatware as usual.Atleast they don't fudge the whole OS like verizon (app nazis) does.
I think at 200 bucks it's great to have a phone AND projector in it.. and also sporting a 1ghz processor.... that's pretty nifty..
Unfortunately I'm enamoured with my HTC Fuze and I wont be switching out the phone until the 3rd generation comes in with either snapdragon or tegra. (and hopefully they'll kill the tilt "function")
@MiketheVee
nm. I just read the press release and the projector does cost extra... it's not as interesting as it originally was now...............
@MiketheVee
What is wrong with tilting? Very useful for when its on the desk. It clicks into place anyways, you don't have to tilt it if you don't want to.
@Peter F
From reviews I have read and from the mouth of many ATT agents, the original tilt had a problem where it becomes much much more vulnerable in tilt mode. When i was thinking of getting either the tilt or wait for the fuze, i asked the guy what people thought of the tilt and he told me that he got alot of insurance replacements on these phones due to its weakness at the tilt. I thought it was an isolated incident in one area, but after going to roughly 5 other stores, they all say the same thing.
I don't think the tilt 2 will improve upon that since the concept is that the more moveable hinges you have on an object, the more vulnerable it will become.
that and I think it's ridiculous to try to type on the phone when it's tilted, unless you want to poke your phone to death. (ofcourse movie viewing is much nicer in a tilt but that's it.)
@MiketheVee
apparently, the fuze had the highest return rate (straight from a warranty rep). I replaced mine 4 times
@name of user
I didn't know that. I also don't know why it's being returned. The tilts were returned because the hinge breaking the phone in half on the smallest impact. That was mainly my arguement. I have not had to get my fuze fixed at any point or time. It worked fine even after falling straight out of my backpack on concrete (it had no protection except for teh screen). I've dropped it plenty more times and everything still works fine.
But yeah, I'm not a fan of the tilt function because it simply makes the phone more vulnerable.
@MiketheVee I owned the original Tilt as well as the Tilt II the original took more of a beating than you could imagine, including multiple drops to concrete. I think intuitively if you drop the unit when slid out it is less durable not to mention tilted up however the tilt function only really comes into play when sitting it on a table/desk for me. but both of these devices are as solidly built as a cell phone could be and be ruggedized.
@Mos
I see. The things I've said, are as metioned earlier, anecdotes from the sales associates themselves. I think the tilt itself is an interested function, but I was terrified of the fact that a small drop can break it (according to the att guys. keep in mind I did not mention anything about looking for the fuze NOR do they know anything about the fuze's release). but I think it simply might just be negligence due to the user's fault. Good point nonetheless
@MiketheVee I currently own a tilt and I'm waiting to get the eXpo in the mail. I've checked out the tilt 2 and the slider is visibly stronger than the first one. If you have the phone open and you drop it you could easily break the slide mechanism. I actually did that not 30 days after having the phone. My replacement has been dropped countless times during the 2+ years I've owned it and the only thing that's happened to it is it has a few scratches around the edge. It still slides great. I would recommend checking out http://www.lgexpo.com/ to get more info on this phone. It's more than what engadget says it is. They didn't mention that it's a 5mp camera WITH a flash, which is pretty important for most people, and they didn't mention the fingerprint reader on the front (the little gold bar) that can be used to secure the phone and act as a navigation pad for the OS. You can also use it for camera functions like zooming in and out, as well as media player functions like rewinding/fastforwarding videos/music. I chose this one over the tilt 2.
man, if it only didnt have that fat lump and had no projector it would be sweeeet.
@(Unverified) 'plus an additional $179 should you choose to opt in on that projector.' it seems you can get it without the projector
Right. A 1GHz CPU AND a projector? Expect to be recharging the battery a good 4 times a day...
@Saffy
I think snapdragon gives better battery life. If the HD2 with all the fancy sense ui + huge capacitive screen with a 1200mah battery can last a day or so, this thing will last much longer. Besides, the projector's optional.
If I'm reading that PR right, it's an OPTIONAL projector for an additional $179. This is just a decent winmo phone with a hook on the back.
@onlysoma That probably is the case as it seems almost impossible to use the phone with that big lump sticking out the back.
@onlysoma
yeah the phone is $199 and projector $179
would be nice to have but yeah you would probably have to have a couple of extra batteries in case your going to run an hr presentation
for those of you complaining about the lump, check this out

"Boasting a 3.2-inch external touchscreen with 16M color"
Wait, WHAT?! If this is true, I must know how they did it!
(You know, because WinMo usually only supports up to 65K)
@TT
It's not. They are probably listing the chip specs, as alot of sites did with the HTC Qilin. Chip is capable of 16M colors, but WM is not.
Goodbye Xenon?
Ah great, mobile projectors for the masses. I can't wait to see the horribly indecent, all be it hilarious antics this leads too.
sounds too good to be true... it must have a drawback (and its not WM btw)
@beckhams777 It IS windows mobile 6.5 but it's running LG's S-class interface on top of it. It looks pretty slick.
Eh... I'm kind of over the generic Rectangle-touchscreen with Silver bezel look. I can rattle off several phone names that it looks like: Dare, iPhone, Versa. There's too much empty space aroudn the screen. At least make it curvier or something or fill out the phone like the Droid or the HTC's HD2 where the screen is the majority. It's just so boring looking
in case anyone also wanted to see more pics of this thing, i found some at:

http://gagadget.com/cellphones/2009-11-30-lg_expo_windows-smartfon_s_optsionalnym_pikoproektorom
gagadget loads 10 times faster than engadget...as do all other web sites. Seriously, fix this POS site.
why is it so fat?
check this out:http://microvision.com/
It's similar but uses laser technology and has been developed to be an embedded product. The battery life is way longer than any of the TI or 3Ms out there so far. Picture quality and performance are also stellar.
