The Nielsen Company presented a cadre of individuals with a list of nice, shiny gadgets and let them cross off anything and everything they'd like to buy in the next six months, and 31 percent of kids 6-12 picked the iPad as one of them.

Yawn. If you guys were paying attention, you would know the plan is to make Maemo 6 use Qt with full multi-touch, which isn't due out until late 2010, so it hardly makes sense to flood the market with new models based on an Maemo 5. The new device in 2010 will be another flagship device that debuts Maemo 6, shakes out the bugs and releases the wave of Maemo devices replacing S60 at the top end in 2011.
What you need to be asking Nokia is "How many S60 top-end devices are you planning to release in 2010?" If they say none or one, then one Maemo doesn't look so bad. If they say 23, then Maemo needs to worry. As it stands, 2011 is death to S60 on the top-end as it moves down to the midrange devices, but it will still be very much alive.
P.S. If you read between the lines on some job offers I've had lately, the next Maemo device prototype is already out at their software partners...
Oh, and while the hardware R&D might be laying off, the Qt and Maemo divisions are still hiring.
