So your music-loving grandma wants a PMP, huh? Fair enough -- we've put our heads together to come up with a list of the best we could find in several price ranges -- and we tried to come up with a few that are off the beaten (iPod) path, too. The choices out there sure are varied, but we've culled out the boring and the poorly designed to come up with what we think is the... most melody-friendly group on the planet. Read on for our full recommendations!

Stocking Stuffer

iPod shuffle - Got a friend who really, really hates buttons? Don't we all. Apple's got us covered in that category, and while it's not the cheapest of the tiny PMPs, the iPod shuffle comes in a range of glorious neons to satisfy your urge to color coordinate. You can snag up a 2GB model for $59 or really go for it and grab a 4GB for $79. You know -- if the person is that special.

Sansa Clip+ - Now, the Sansa Clip has been around a long while, but it recently got a new lease on life with the addition of slotRadio. The microSD card-powered slotRadio Clip+ would make a great gift for someone whose tastes in music matches up with whatever's at the top of the Billboard charts -- and we do mean match up exactly. The ultra-cheap PMP comes in 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB versions, and is available in red, black, or blue

iriver E30 - Probably the best looking cheap PMP around, iriver's E30 supports lossless FLAC formats, boasts a 1.8-inch color display and supposedly gets around 52 hours of juice off a single charge. It also boasts an FM radio, voice recording, and a photo viewer so you can show off your family album to people on the subway. You can grab it in 4GB and 8GB varieties.

Oh, you shouldn't have

Sony E Series Walkman - Available in red or black, the E Series Walkman gets high marks for audio quality, boasts an FM Radio, one-touch recording, a 2-inch LCD, and gets about 30 hours of battery life for audio (and around 4 for video). It comes in both 8GB and 16GB flavors.

Cowon iAudio 9 - If you're looking for something a little funky and alien but not tremendously expensive, you might want to turn your attention to the Cowon iAudio 9. The PMP comes in 8GB or 16GB varieties, and while it's not quite the fullscreen touch experience you might get from some of the big boys, the company puts a lot of emphasis on audio quality. The iAudio 9 plays MP3, FLAC, Ogg, WAV, APE, WME, XviD, and WMV files, and might be just the thing if you like stepping off the beaten path.

iPod nano 5G - While we're not huge fans of the quality of the video camera here, the fact that the new nano has one at all is kind of nifty. Besides that, you get a pretty solid iTunes-centric music experience here, replete with Genius options, picture and video viewing, and a wide selection of colors -- which should makes things easier if you happen to be buying these for a gaggle of kids. Models include an FM tuner as well, and 8GB and 16GB models abound in all the shades.

We can't afford the rent now, can we?

Zune HD - Probably the biggest development in the dedicated PMP market all year, the Zune HD is an easy hit for someone in your life who's a voracious music lover. The incredibly handsome hardware, Tegra guts, beautiful screen, and slick UI are all major points of interest, but the real hook here is that Zune Pass subscription service which lets you snag all you can eat for $14.95 a month (and take home 10 tracks every 30 days to keep). Oh, and don't forget: you can get one in magenta or purple now, too!

iPod touch - The touch might seem like an obvious choice -- but there's a reason for that. Besides being a full-featured iPod, the player enjoys most of the benefits of an iPhone, like that massive selection of apps and huge capacitive touchscreen. This thing doesn't just stand in as a music player -- it's practically a mini-computer and game console. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who won't be showering you with affection if they find it under the tree -- just make sure they're not a die-hard Linux fan.

Sony X-Series Walkman - This is one PMP we still drool over a bit every time we catch a glimpse. Sony is well known for putting audio quality first, and the X-Series players are no exception. Besides that, it's easy to fall in love with its crisp OLED display, slick UI, and notably long battery life. The X-Series is our most expensive recommendation, but then... can you really afford not to buy it?

Funny thing is, I can't afford the rent now because I bought a 32GB ZuneHD back in September, oh the joys of college living.
@Mitch I hear that
@Mitch
I pay the rent first. I can't pay my car insurance right now because of my spending habits... -_-
@Mitch It'll be a wonder if I make it to my next semester thanks to my horrid spending habits this semester. But yay new iPod Touch 32GB 3rd gen....
@Mitch That _IS_ funny!
@Mitch I've had my Zune HD 32GB and I think it's the best money I've spent this year. For all the things it does it's ridiculously cheap! I'm thinking of getting a second one since it's such a good value for money.. seriously!
@Mitch
pass out at three, wake up at ten, go out to eat, then do it again ...
man i love college!
and iPod for every category. Just the way Apple likes it.
@werty1432k I like how as soon Engadget shows any support for Apple they are called out as fanboys. You might notice that they didn't put the iPhone in the smartphone gift guide, I think that decision mainly was to please people like you.
@kopmis oh shit. disregard that
@kopmis lol ok, I was reading it an was like huhh?
@werty1432k
But, of course! You expect Engadget to tell people that alternatives exist. Why should anybody know about anything else than these AMAZING (sarcasm) devices with the fruit on the back? Nothing against Apple products, but the more that iPod is shoved at us, the more this looks like Apple's own little concentration camp.
@HardToBelieve All I meant by my comment was that Apple has set up their product line perfectly. Low end to high end. They can expect a very profitable holiday season.
what?!? where is my Samsung P3 on that there list? its only $120 for 8gb, has a 3 inch touch screen, bluetooth, haptic, and is built like a tank.. :P
btw, I really lol'd when I read the linux fan bit in the iPod touch description ;) (ubuntu 9.10 ftw!)
@electron
Hey electron!!!
@Odyssey
ahh, hi? O_0
Where's the Cowon S9? It's incredisexy
@Flowah totally agree! it plays videos, flash, yadda yadda. it's pretty and the sound quality beats the pants off the ipod.
@Flowah
That's what I came here to say as well!
@Flowah I'm with the others, i came here to say what about the S9.......but i figure its cause it doesn't have Wifi......ooooh big whoop, who needs it
That makes five of us, then. ^^ Sure, it hasn't got WiFi and for some reason there are people who dislike the fact that it's light...but the sound quality, video playback, possibility for user created interfaces and 3.3" AMOLED screen are a-we-some.
@Flowah nope, six :-) i love my s9, the battery life rapes all of the above, and sound quality is pretty much on par with the x series. plus its only like $200. AND kick ass uci's like Dnw's Aero Ultimate g2.
@Flowah I came here to concur with everyone else :)
No Samsung P3? Seriously? C'mon do a little research.
@Dubb That would have been in our guide last year. Pretty sure it was. These are products from 2009.
@Joshua Topolsky
Actually it was not in last years list. Just checked through the whole thing. And this must be a new rule too because you put HD DVD in the 2008 list and it had been around since 2006. I realize it is a joke but here is a funnier joke for you. The iPod Shuffle and iPod touch were in last years list too... oh wait these are new models that do the exact same as last years models.
Seriously though, how can you recommend the iPod touch as a gaming device? My laptop and android phone plays games but I do not replace my 360 and DSi with them.
@Josh The P3 came out this year. May 2009 actually. Almost half way through the year.
@Dubb
I totally agree! The P3 really deserves to be on that list!
@Joshua Topolsky So you are willing to recomond inferior products simply because they are newer? Isn't the point of a holiday guide to tell people what the best products are in a price range regardless of when they came out. (Unless their age affects their performance obviously)
@JXCGunrunna But ur laptop and android phone ar gaming devices.
...so in other words, I'm gonna buy a used Zune 80/120 off eBay for $150, and enjoy having a shit load a space, a huge ass screen, free XNA studio games, and not having to pay and arm and a leg to store my collection of thousands and thousands of songs at a decent bitrate.
Yup. I'm set...
Though the shuffle is technically cheap, I can't see a single reason for getting one when Sansa Clip+ is cheapER and superior in every aspect. I have one and it's a great workout PMP. Also, it actually has a screen, allowing for choice instead of predetermined or shuffled lists.
@ch3burashka
True, but 3 reasons.
1. Brand Loyalty
2. Advertising (Shelf Space)
3. iTunes.
are there any decent touch screen mp3 players that allow you to use SDHC or even SDXC cards for additional media storage?
i'd love to get a 64 GB Zune HD, but as of yet they're not made. and i don't really want a 64 GB iPod Touch.
any other suggestions?
@willowtwf
I totally agree...why oh why can't they have microSD support? :(
@willowtwf
How about the Cowon D2
@Stereotype i guess the best bet right now would be an Archos 5 running Android? especially if you can get free google maps on it (it has built in gps)
Aren't there any Android-based PMPs out there? What's the cheapest one?
@joefresco I think the Archos Internet Tablet is your only option if you want a PMP with Android on it.
@melloncollie128 That would be correct
@joefresco
Creative has the Zii whenever they get that shit going.
the pmp is dead. long live the phone that does it all
@artshark And dies halfway through the day from the battery drain of doing it?
@artshark No thanks. I prefer having a cellphone that lasts more than 3 hours on a single charge,
@artshark no offense mate, but i don't need to pay an extra $200-400 a year just to be able to use my PMP.
And let's not forget that there's people who want the audio quality from some of the Cowon, Samsung or Sony players, which you won't be getting from your phone.
@artshark
While i love my droid for music, it does not replace a good PMP. Until phones can have the battery life to support all the stuff we want to do on them, they will not be able to kill any electronic.
@JXCGunrunna
For some people, that is correct, but not for all. I would be interested to see statistics of where PMPs are used the most. Anyone using their phone or PMP while driving, on a plane, sitting at a desk, or anything else near an outlet/USB port can simply plug it in and not have to worry about the battery drain.
As for the quality of media playback on a phone compared to a PMP, of course it's not as good. A device, much like a person, is going to better at a given task if it is focused solely on that task. A phone could be made to play back music as well as any PMP but it would cost more to build it. I think the iPhone is a perfect example of that, if you look at non-subsidized pricing. Its audio quality may not be as good as the best of the PMPs but it's at least as good as an iPod. That's good enough for most people.
What about archos? while not technically a PMP the sure give these guys a run for their money!
@aarofloyd actually Archos does make dedicated PMPs. the most recent iteration is the Archos 3 with 8GB of internal memory. does a lot more than most 8GB players and currently runs only $91.70 on amazon
