So your music-loving grandma wants a PMP, huh? Fair enough -- we've put our heads together to come up with a list of the best we could find in several price ranges -- and we tried to come up with a few that are off the beaten (iPod) path, too. The choices out there sure are varied, but we've culled out the boring and the poorly designed to come up with what we think is the... most melody-friendly group on the planet. Read on for our full recommendations!

Stocking Stuffer

iPod shuffle - Got a friend who really, really hates buttons? Don't we all. Apple's got us covered in that category, and while it's not the cheapest of the tiny PMPs, the iPod shuffle comes in a range of glorious neons to satisfy your urge to color coordinate. You can snag up a 2GB model for $59 or really go for it and grab a 4GB for $79. You know -- if the person is that special.

Sansa Clip+ - Now, the Sansa Clip has been around a long while, but it recently got a new lease on life with the addition of slotRadio. The microSD card-powered slotRadio Clip+ would make a great gift for someone whose tastes in music matches up with whatever's at the top of the Billboard charts -- and we do mean match up exactly. The ultra-cheap PMP comes in 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB versions, and is available in red, black, or blue

iriver E30 - Probably the best looking cheap PMP around, iriver's E30 supports lossless FLAC formats, boasts a 1.8-inch color display and supposedly gets around 52 hours of juice off a single charge. It also boasts an FM radio, voice recording, and a photo viewer so you can show off your family album to people on the subway. You can grab it in 4GB and 8GB varieties.

Oh, you shouldn't have

Sony E Series Walkman - Available in red or black, the E Series Walkman gets high marks for audio quality, boasts an FM Radio, one-touch recording, a 2-inch LCD, and gets about 30 hours of battery life for audio (and around 4 for video). It comes in both 8GB and 16GB flavors.

Cowon iAudio 9 - If you're looking for something a little funky and alien but not tremendously expensive, you might want to turn your attention to the Cowon iAudio 9. The PMP comes in 8GB or 16GB varieties, and while it's not quite the fullscreen touch experience you might get from some of the big boys, the company puts a lot of emphasis on audio quality. The iAudio 9 plays MP3, FLAC, Ogg, WAV, APE, WME, XviD, and WMV files, and might be just the thing if you like stepping off the beaten path.

iPod nano 5G - While we're not huge fans of the quality of the video camera here, the fact that the new nano has one at all is kind of nifty. Besides that, you get a pretty solid iTunes-centric music experience here, replete with Genius options, picture and video viewing, and a wide selection of colors -- which should makes things easier if you happen to be buying these for a gaggle of kids. Models include an FM tuner as well, and 8GB and 16GB models abound in all the shades.

We can't afford the rent now, can we?

Zune HD - Probably the biggest development in the dedicated PMP market all year, the Zune HD is an easy hit for someone in your life who's a voracious music lover. The incredibly handsome hardware, Tegra guts, beautiful screen, and slick UI are all major points of interest, but the real hook here is that Zune Pass subscription service which lets you snag all you can eat for $14.95 a month (and take home 10 tracks every 30 days to keep). Oh, and don't forget: you can get one in magenta or purple now, too!

iPod touch - The touch might seem like an obvious choice -- but there's a reason for that. Besides being a full-featured iPod, the player enjoys most of the benefits of an iPhone, like that massive selection of apps and huge capacitive touchscreen. This thing doesn't just stand in as a music player -- it's practically a mini-computer and game console. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who won't be showering you with affection if they find it under the tree -- just make sure they're not a die-hard Linux fan.

Sony X-Series Walkman - This is one PMP we still drool over a bit every time we catch a glimpse. Sony is well known for putting audio quality first, and the X-Series players are no exception. Besides that, it's easy to fall in love with its crisp OLED display, slick UI, and notably long battery life. The X-Series is our most expensive recommendation, but then... can you really afford not to buy it?

Anyone know if the iPod touch will work on same dock as the iPod 30GB classic dock?
If so, I might consider this as a gift.
@xirsteon or you could just BUY A NEW ONE
me this time, pls
I've had the Archos 605 WiFi for a few years now, and it still holds up very well in terms of music and video. Not much of an apps store, however.
where is the hard drive love?
@(Unverified) youre absolutely right, i just stuffed a 80gb hdd into my archos. flash just isnt quite there yet. and much more expensive.
sorry guys, but ipod shuffle = fail
@(Unverified)
can we get the ipod shuffle on the engadget blacklist like Monster Cable please?
ZII TRINITY FTW!!!
No honorable mention for Archos 5, the hard disk mammoth of video player?
First off, having no s9 on that list is just terrible. Best bang for your buck PMP on the market right now.
Second, learn the difference between a PMP and a DAP Engadget. Neither the Sansa Clip+ or the iPod Shuffle are PMPs. They are DAPs. They only play audio, thus they are digital audio players.
@Solidstate89
Y so technical? This isn't army boot camp u know, give them a break. Their just stating some of the popular MEDIA players out there. A PMP is still a MEDIA player.
@Odyssey
Why would you expect anything less than being technically correct on a technology news site?
@Solidstate89
Hey, don't be a d-bag! TECHNICALLY music is a form of media, so they can call a shuffle a pmp whenever the hell they feel like it!
@Solidstate89
No one really cares about technical details on a HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE. The only #1 thing that REALLY needs technical details is on product SPECS. I mean c'mon, these guys are editors, they know what there doin.
@Solidstate89
And also FYI this isn't really a pure news site. If u were ever on this website awhile back, Engadget posted an article about some guys Macbook Air getting ran over by a bus. Now is that really news? Answer:NO Engadget is just a website that has INTERESTING articles that are related or involves technology.
What about cowon E2, or the S9. I know the s9 is a little old but it still rocks.
The Sansa Clip+ also has an FM tuner. The Slot Radio slot is also a normal Micro SD slot, you can expand it up to a 16gb card.
I've had one for a while now, it's a great little player, can't be beat for the price.
The main gripes I have - it doesn't read the simple .M3U tags many rippers generate (I use Grip in Linux) - it wants the extended format. My tracks are named 01_title.mp3, 02_title.mp3, but it doesn't play them in numerical / alpha order - so the only option is to create the extended format .M3U files like WinAMP uses. The player has occasional software glitches, i.e. the pause button will stop working, or the volume rocker will not change the volume. Rebooting the player fixes those, hopefully they release an update, or we get a working RockBox firmware for the Clip+.
it's funny how Apple's whole iPod line up is on this list.
I don't know about you guys but my iPod mini is still awesome. Battery life is great, I still have original ear buds(sometimes sound isn't great). Looks brand new too and the metal casing it has is unbreakable. I wish they still built them as good as that... ahh...how times change.
The Cowon iAudio 9 sounds interesting due to it accepting high-quality audio formats, but if they're going to allow those formats, they should probably work on having more than a measly 16 GB of memory.
As for PMPs in general, I think I'm going to wait for the next Zune, whatever that may be, since my 30 GB original is still working, and I'd like more memory than what the current Zune HD models offer. I guess they held out on memory storage so there can be a reason for people to buy the 80 & 120 GB models.
I just noticed that I said "as for PMPs in general" but I only talked about Zunes. I guessed I'm pretty biased, lol.
Buy a Rio Forge for $10 on ebay. It lacks gapless playback but its bookmarks are the only way to go if you listen to a combination of music, podcasts and audiobooks at the same time.
$189.99 - 16GB Zune

The Sansa Clip+ (and Clip) have surprisingly good audio quality - sure, they're small and simple, but they do what they do well.
If your primary need is listening to podcasts I don't know of a better choice than iTunes and any player that works well with it.
What, no Ainols? Could have given those their own category like "What were you thinking?" or "You sick bastard!":D
How about the Zune 120GB? $229 from Zuneoriginals, including the A/V dock. You know you want one, because you won't see anymore HDD-based DAPs.
They really need to make an Android pmp... Zii Egg was just a bunch of hype for their Trinity phone.
