Nissan introducing low-cost navigation systems this January
Now here's a good idea: a built-in GPS navigation system that's actually priced to move. Co-developed with Bosch, Nissan has put together a $400 option with a 5-inch touhcscreen, Bluetooth support for phones, USB connectivity for media players, iPod integration, XM Satellite and NavTraffic. The Detroit News was certainly impressed, testing it on a new Sentra and calling it a moment where the benefits of the built-in nav systems outweigh the costs -- although the display was maybe a bit too small for its liking. Look for it to these to hit in some of its lower-priced models starting this January. Hit up the source link for the full impressions.

I don't know, that seems kinda small. A small nav screen is actually more distracting as you probably have to look at it longer/squint and pay less attention to the road. Instead of this, why not develop a better TTS nav system.
God, why can't car manufactures make the whole center console as a touch screen? I mean it's almost 2010 already, and a lot of cars still have interiors that look like they're from the 90s.
@pika2000
Listen, You dont want people F-in around with a screen when they are driving. Most people cant even drive let alone operate something that has no tactile feed back.
Also I'd rather them spend more time not making the car a POS than putting in crap electronics.
@pika2000 Touch screen requires a ninja-like muscle memory or taking your eyes off the road. The former is rare and the latter is dangerous.
@pika2000
lol, you forget that companies exist for maximizing profit. Navigation consoles still remain a "luxury" feature, and to maintain that reputation as a "luxury" console keeps its value at a premium price.
Nonetheless, it's nice to see that Nissan is extending the competition with an affordable alternative for those who want the neat features of navigation without having to bust their wallet. If this turns successful, other companies will follow suit, and the competition will lead to more advanced consoles.
So, Toyota-[Lexus], Honda-[Acura], Volkswagen-[Audi], Cooper-[BMW], Chrysler-[Mercedes], Ford-[Lincoln], Chevy-GMC, wutcha got?
@konceptzoflife Thing is, that small screen will be more of a hazard. I rather see Nissan do a speech-based nav ala Ford's SYNC instead if it's "too expensive" to have a larger touch screen. I mean we can buy a large screen standalone GPS unit for less than $400.
Really, with the way things are going, my next car maybe a Ford + SYNC, and I don't like Ford.
@konceptzoflife
Chrysler and Mercedes are no longer together. Chrysler was sold to an independent firm a couple of years ago.
@konceptzoflife
The Marque you're looking for is Cadillac.
Also, maybe you forgot that Nissan also has a "luxury" brand, Infiniti.
Wow. And like everything else Nissan, this thing is ugly as shit.
I love my AUX jack in my Sentra :)
@danbrunell
My girlfriends has a 2008 Nissan Rogue. AUX is great!
I wish it was somewhere else though... cords look like crap sticking out from that high on the dash. I put a 90 degree L adapter so it look a little better...
Guess the low price band explains why the model does not look so trendy.
Quality Research
@qualityresearch Ugh, no one cares about your shitty website, even less so when you spam it incorrectly. Maybe you could get away with it if you made a comment that was worth reading instead of some generic observation.
If I was looking for a low-cost nav system I would stay away from this one because it mentions 'iPod'.
Anyways, I'm just waiting on the 2.0 Hero update for free you-know-what.
This is Park Distance Control !!! Look at the picture ,.. and there is no NAV button on this thing either !!! You guys sure this is a Sat Nav ThingyMeBob ??!!
@Basti In my experience with Nissans, the rear view camera automatically engages when the vehicle is in reverse. The lack of navigation hardware buttons is likely due to the fact that the screen is a touchscreen. My guess is that all nav functionality is controlled through software buttons.
What's that in the background? The roman coliseum?
From this picture the screen is located at the place a normal radio is usually at. If thats indeed the case, this is the most distracting location ever !!!
In the words of the venerable Paris Hilton: that's hot.
Hey, at least it isn't BOSE.
Does anyone else besides me think that deck is rather "bland"?
@r34p3r
I don't think that any of the Nissan stereos were actually Bose, I think that they were all re-branded Clarion stereos.
Well its rockford fosgate! the only thing they make good are there subs.
There cd decks always looked like shit and worked the same.
@a falling stone
English? Anyway, Rockford has become nothing but a branding gimmick these days.
@a falling stone I have 2 RF amps and 2 RF 10" subs that have lasted for 10 years through 3 cars. Never tried their decks though.
This is a long time coming. The fact is, you can go and buy an aftermarket GPS system with live traffic for ~$300. Why should you have to pay $2000+ for a system that happens to come with the car? There's a discrepancy there.
@ArbitrageMan
Well, the extra cost typically would be attributed to the design/development work of integrating it into the rest of the car. Most of the in dash systems do a lot more than just navigation and voice/communications. That said, it is still a tough sell at $2k.
It's about time. Most built in GPS systems for cars are around $2000 and don't perform as well as a newer $200 portable model.
I would love this in my 2008 Rogue. Especially if the back lighting is an orange color like the rest of my console.
My stock receiver didn't come with build in MP3 support, only AUX which is weak imo. I know i would easily put in any of the hundreds of receivers, but most of them look too messy and cheap. I want something thats easy to ready, with big buttons, and simple/clean looking. This posted receiver look nice since it isn't as expensive as some out there, doesn't look super expensive so it wont get stolen in 2 days, and comes with a nice feature set.
I'm not sure why everyone keeps putting the display for back up cameras in the dash... aren't you supposed to be looking backward when backing up?
I put the LCD for my backup cam in my headliner above the rear window. It works so much better than having one in the front.
http://www.thebaseonline.com/ridgeline/IMG_0469_sm.jpg
@doubledeej
because the positioning of the backup camera would allow you to see the blindspot directly behind the vehicle that you wouldn't see by just look behind you or using your mirrors. I don't think that they're pushing that anyone use the backup camera as the only thing to use when backing up
@doubledeej
Thats actually a really good idea haha. I've been thinking about installing a back up camera and i'll now look into this as an option.
@J D
I understand what a backup camera is for; I have one. But it doesn't make any sense to me to put the monitor in the front of the car when you should be turned around and looking backward whenever you are backing up. Shouldn't the monitor be in the back?
About 1/2 the time when my camera lets me see something I wouldn't see otherwise it is because it has moved into my path as I am moving, not just beforehand. Having the camera in the front means you can only safely check it before you start moving. Putting it in the back means you can see it the whole time you are in motion.
By putting it in the front they are almost encouraging people to not turn around when backing up.
I like the price and everything but it looks too small :( .. anyway .. love the 'Turn and look before backing' .. to me sounds like it's being lazy and cba to do it itself lol
iPod integration?
I wonder if an Android system here wouldn't make much more sense.
I probably can't put this in my '07 Versa :0[
Looks nice for those who might be technologically fearful !
So I can now get integrated iPod support on a $20k car. Great news considering I just paid $36k on a new Murano that does not have that option.
Nissar is offering Navigation systems at better price its a very good news for all. Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) is the standard generic term for satellite navigation systems that provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning with global coverage.GPS has become a widely used aid to navigation worldwide, and a useful tool for map-making, land surveying, commerce, scientific uses, tracking and surveillance, and hobbies such as geocaching and waymarking.
