DJ Hero controller goes rogue, now available separately
If early sales reports are anything to go by, Activision's DJ Hero franchise won't be hosting too many impromptu Christmas tree raves this holiday season. Many gamers have been shunning the idea of yet another plasticy peripheral cluttering up their otherwise fastidiously neat abodes, but, for those with storage space to spare and would-be turntablist friends, the controller is now available separately for $70. That's just $40 less than the package with the game and still a bit of an ask if it wants to match the popularity of its faux-stringed predecessors. The best things in music never go mainstream, yeah?

I'm holding out for Kazoo Hero.
@(Unverified) made me lol
@(Unverified) I will jump when the bring out harmonica hero!
Then I can really BLOW!
Would get if it had midi-out. It would be pretty cool to control Virtual DJ, FL Studio, or Ableton Live with this.
@LastRushup
Heard of timecoded vinyl?
@LastRushup actually I was thinking that it would be cooler if they used compliant usb midi and then I could use ther controllers and assign them to the game- it would be fun using my padkontrol to play it, scratching on the x/y controls
What good does it do purchasing the turntable separately from the game? I will admit though that the turntable is fun to play with when I'm not playing the game.
@sonarbiscuit
Exactly! What good is it without te game?
@sonarbiscuit Have you never played a multiplayer video game before?
@sonarbiscuit
Arrr! You can't download hardware, matey.
I still don't think it has anything to do with having another plastic peripheral laying around (this one is tiny by comparison to most of the others). I just don't think people care about this game. A cool theory, but I don't think anyone really thought it through as much as they could have.
I love the Guitar Hero and Rock Band stuff, but this... this just seems stupid.
Nilay, maybe you could autograph a few. wikka wikka wikka ;-)
Going rogue, you say?

@MrDuchess Bravo, good sir. Bravo.
@MrDuchess
not bad for MS paint!
the guitars and drums are fun to play as you are supposed to follow the instruction and rythm. DJ stuff is something to play in freestyle, IMHO
I do not listen to Rock but I LOVE guitar hero / rock band. Too bad rockers don't feel the same way..... The general populations fear of Hip-Hop killed this game.
@Chaos744 I totally agree. +1
@Chaos744 More electro house please!!
Good now I can grab the game off usenet and buy the controller! I was waiting for this!
I'd never buy the plastic turntable separately, it's just kinda pointless.
On a side note, I already have the same turntable in the background of the picture anways. I have no need for a plastic variant.
No one plans to fail, they simply fail to plan.
This should have been rolled out on PC & Mac as well since a good majority of actual DJs use one or the other for DJing. This would have enticed me to buy it. I don't have a game system as I prefer to use my PC. If I were in my teens, it might be different. I have guitar hero for PC and I love it.
I want that slipmat!
I think the constant references by people to the fact that the turntable (or guitar, or drums) are 'plastic' is just a reductive attempt to belittle those who find enjoyment in the game. It has nothing to do with the fact that they are plastic. I bought and reviewed this game and it's a lot of fun. So many missed opportunities for them to have looped in hip-hop aficionados, but overall I had loads of fun (and so will folks who open this up on Christmas morning.
That said, I think they should have sold the higher grade turntable that they sell with the Jay-Z/Eminem Special Edition 'taking-advantage-of-your-loyalty' pack. Apparently the cross fader (which is poorly made) is a bit sturdier. Would like to have that one, and I'd pay as a second controller.
@devron absolutely. Thats why I havent bought the game yet. I dont have $200 to drop on the Limited edition and the reg turntable felt cheap to me. Plus I dont have a stand to put the regular one on.
I love that Galaga turntable. But anyway, DJ Hero is not my cup of tea. I prefer DJ Max Trilogy. Anyone heard of it?
@shinrasboy Most addictive games I have ever played.
@(Unverified) My favorite was DJ Max Portable 2, Clazziquai was also AWESOME
@shinrasboy Definitely agree, DJ max 3 kinda bored me to death with its utterly bland music, I loved the cheesyness.
For the love of humanity can we retire the term "Going Rogue" once and for all? ;)
I think I'll get two of these instead of the new Pioneer CDJ-2000s......yeah.
I've sampled Guitar Hero and DJ Hero. GH I found quaint, DJH I really liked. If there was a standalone version of it that didn't require console, I'd get it (and am patiently waiting for my industrious friends in China to solve that problem for me).
The problem for DJH, I think is the perception if the flexibility of the peripheral. With the GH or Rockband, you can choose what kind of music you prefer (assuming a version has been released with that preference). The turntable only seems to apply to hiphop, or dance/house.
What I'd like to see Activision do is come up with a game that utilizes the instruments with music loaded into the game by the player, that could be controlled with the any of the peripherals.
