DIY touchscreen gloves are as simple as a few stitches
Sure you could buy any number of capacitive touchscreen-friendly gloves available these days (like the Dots iPhone gloves we tried on last winter) -- but what if you're looking for something a little warmer or more stylish? Then you might want consider a DIY pair, which turn out to be far easier to make then you might think. As Instructables member Grathio has helpfully laid out, all you need is the pair of gloves of your choice, a needle, and a magical material known as conductive thread (used in all sorts of wearable electronics), which you simply sew into as many fingertips as you like. Ready to get started? All the details you need are at the link below.

Dickie Roberts is lovin it...
@Sparky420 I laughed.
OR USE RESISTIVE SCREENS, NO NEED FOR FURTHER MODIFICATIONS!
@Sarig
Somebody is aiming to get down ranked.
@Sarig Please let it be high quality resistive units like on the Omnia II or better yet, those Stantum touchscreens. Not the crap like on Nokia's phones...
Obligatory "how do you type with boxing gloves on" comment
My mechanics gloves that I wear when working on my car, and also when I ride my bike, have sticky pads on the index and thumb to help you hold a nut, but I've found that they'll work on my iPhone's screen. Really convenient. I'm sure with just a few stitches on a regular pair of gloves will do.
That is one heavily modded iPhone. Where is that 4x4 grid?!
Apple is going to sue someone soon...
What are you blabbering on about man? Your comment has no valid reason of existence? Are you mentally impaired? Why do you ask these possibly rhetorical questions?
@y3knik He's in a paint app...
@RiDK ah, that makes sense.
@y3knik
LOL
@y3knik
FAIL
My metal Knight's gloves should do the trick
The Gadgeteer/Lifehacker had this article posted 8 days ago... >.>
@pcwolff Cool! Thanks for the info!
@pcwolff Well maybe Engadget felt like waiting until it was 8 days closer to winter.
How about instead of a band aid, we get some better tech? Surely capacitive and resistive screens aren't all we're ever going to get. Does someone in know, know of any better touch technology coming up?
Sandpaper gloves work quite well too! ;0)
or you could get a phone with a resistive touchscreen and not do all this crap
@fanboy Yeah have fun pressing a resistive screen with ski gloves on. :-/
@fanboy Get out of there nokia fanboy. Go and press your shitty resistive touchscreen, while android and iphone users are HAPPY with high technology touchscreens ;)
or you could just buy a pair of Fox Digit biking gloves, they work fine for me. save yourself some sewing.
"far easier to make then you might think."
Then you think what?
This is why I wear gauntlets.
Honestly, do people over 10 years old wear gloves?
If so..why? Doesn't your coat have pockets? What's so hard about keeping your hands in your pockets if they're cold and taking the phone out to use it when you need to. Are cold hands THAT big of an inconvenience?
@surgex You obviously don't live in a colder climate and choose to walk to work.
@(Unverified)
I live in new york, and no, I drive to work.
Can't walk with your hands in your pockets?
@surgex
You live in NY and you seriously can't see why this is useful tech? Does your phone have a capacitive screen? :|
@surgex
I guess you've never heard of winter activities? Skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing... Oh, nevermind. I can do all of those with my hands in my pockets! When it's -40 out and I need to make a call I'm gonna thank the Lord for conductive thread.
... or you could just own the best smartphone on the market for $499 without it being subsidized and use normal gloves. Of course I'm speaking of the Nokia N900.
I proved you don't need iPhone gloves a few months back....

@mukelarvin
erm.. no, no that isn't really the answer.
Knowing apple, they are probably going to make a software update that will disable this (if they ever see it), marking it as "illegal non-apple hardware".
Lolz!
If you see a thunderstorm cloud, don't point at it.
Interesting. The iPhone engadget site doesn't show the source if the article so there is no link to click. Had to switch to the normal site to click it.
I use my iPhone when playing golf and the touch screen works just fine with a golf glove on. Nothing special about the glove either.
these would be alot better...non?

Late again. I read this elsewhere several days ago.
@Fellwalker cool story, bro.
Nice! I need to try this. I spy Scribble: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=312021341. Nice to see our app pop up in random places like this :-)
