It's been a long, long journey, but Nokia's
E72 -- the hotly-anticipated successor to the wildly popular
E71 -- is finally available as an unlocked phone directly from Nokia USA following a November release
elsewhere. The privilege of upgrading to what could very well be the finest S60 3.2 handset ever made won't be cheap, though: they're charging $469 before tax and shipping, but in exchange, you're getting a 5 megapixel cam, optical d-pad ("Navi Key" in Nokia parlance), and full-on HSPA with up to 10.2Mbps down and 2Mbps up. Of course, you won't get anything close to those speeds in the States -- but hey, you can't drive a Lambo 180 miles per hour on a public street, either.
[Thanks, Pankil]
@JS, different tool for a different job. N900 is a powerhouse that, at present, mainly focuses on media and geek-related stuff, leaving a big chunk of work to be done in the phone department, has troubles with Exchange and several such features which are crucial for people using their phone mainly for business. E72 is exactly the opposite - it does have tons of limits and it surely doesn't have large, gorgeous screen, but what it does flawlessly, and I'd dare to say better than any BB out there, is the business part. After all, `E` in the name of the series stands for - enterprise.
@JS
Mobile phones don't have to have touchscreens to be good.
This phone is worth .. at most $99 flat -- no contract nothing.
@JS
Shut up.
Nokia needs to seriously think about othere OS's, Android to be blunt. s60 is outdated and slow. I loved the E71, but after having the iPhone 3G it's hard to go back to Nokia. They have the hardware sense of Apple, but the software sense of Microsoft (Vista)
They've been selling the E72 here in Singapore for the last month. It is surprisingly cheap compared to other business phones/smartphones. Unlocked price was something like $650 sing dollars. Roughly 400 ish USD.
For comparison, an iphone uncontracted is over SGD$1000 and N97 Mini is about SGD$800-900+.
I am still very, very tempted to buy this. The price is just superb for something of this quality.
Are you kidding? Android is still a work in progress and it isn't anywhere near optimised for a device like the E71/E72.
The slowness of the OS is due to Nokia typically using lower end processors and not the OS. With a fast processor like in the E72, the OS is very snappy.
Symbian/S60 on a non touch device is superior to Android.
If any of you is still sitting on the fence over this my two cents in the matter is that you go for it. I have one that is 2weeks old and. Before that I used a Nokia E55. I still have the E55 but The E72 leaves it in the dust in many small subtle things that really matter. After using both devices I don't thing I can ever downgrade again. They ROCK!!!!!
