Verizon ad confirms Droid is a not-quite pretty 'racehorse duct taped to a Scud missile'
There's something peculiar about Verizon's latest addition to its promotional Droid onslaught. Sure, we get the expected Mad Libs-esque hyperboles like "it rips through the web like a circular saw through a ripe banana," but other nods seem to indicate an acknowledgement that, well, it's not the prettiest of flagship phone princesses. "Should [a phone be] be a tiara-wearing digitally clueless beauty pageant queen?" (Wonder who that's a reference to.) Listen Verizon, trading "hairdo for can do" is great and all, but why can't we simply have both brains and beauty? Still, it's nice to know the fighting words haven't all but left the industry. See the ad for yourself after the break.

basically up to this verizons ads have been true....this ad is just wrong. the iphone is fast as hell and its pretty.
@seangt
Did you watch the video? Everything they said was true.
They didn't claim the iPhone Was slow. They claimed they're was as fast as a racehorse duct taped to scud missile. I prefer verizon to keep making ads that talk about themselves and not criticize others incessantly like a little company in Cupertino whose name i wont mention
@(Unverified) Ill take ads that DOES both.
These Ads are starting to get a little watered down. The sting is not as potent as when it first started. A whole ad on looks? Reverse phycology?
The target is obviously not the average consumers because we know looks also play an important part. So again with all these ads they're targeting the person who already know all about this phone and its message, and who probably were not going to get an iPhone anyway.

Gotta love that style! Why isn't Motorola's logo prominently displayed like Verizon's or Google's. They're as much part of this as those two, aren't they? If this is the robot, what does that make the Droid Eris? (which is actually curvier than iProduct)?
Daim ! that's like a bitch slap to the "white" iphon...that was good!!
Verizon is doing a fabulous job on the advertising for the Droid, from the messaging and positioning standpoint this is years ahead of the apple stuff, which itself is not bad. But cheers to Verizon, the whole series of ads of late have been top drawer stuff.
Now Microsoft should get hold of Verizon's agency to dramatically improve its lame and pathetic advertising efforts so far. Remember the cringe inducing Bill Gates and Seinfield ads! and the mojave project!!! insane.
We cover our Iphones to protect them, You take care of things you love. Second don't hate because Apple does form and function so well! And third please remember all these phones are copying the Iphone. Its easy to sit back and copy and make any improvement on an already established devise. try being the innovator. Oh thats right they can't. OK, copy on. The Droid, please
@medicguy I always get a kick out of the copier comments. If you want to be technical, all phones are copying the phone before them and improving on an established design. That being said, if you trace cell phone history back, you'll end up with a patent filed for the first practical, non-vehicle, hand held cell phone in 1973 by an employee (and some of their coworkers)... of Motorola. Kinda funny.
@hobbes28 Wow man, I never knew that little piece of history before. Thanks for the info. Cool Stuff.
not bad.
Why all the people here seems to think that princesses are beautiful? Watched too much Disney movies? Most princesses are between average to plain ugly (just like the iPhone)
The reason Verizon is doing all these adds is it has to educate the public that the iPhone isn't the end all be all.... and educating public is hard.
I can't get over how awesomely ridiculous these ads are.
It's like Brawndo all over again.
well, per my VW kiosk friends, they haven't had 1 iphone/att conversion to the dROID... all upgrades of current VW customers. I guess churn is most important overall!

What planet are you living on? I know several people who tossed their iPhones for Droids (and even a few for the Droid Eris). Maybe if you stepped out of the coffee shop every so often you'd notice that.
@Sanskrit Your obviously quite ignorant, condescending and patronizing. You kiss your momma with that mouth of yours??? Or you GF/BF??? Oh no, thats right.. you don't have one cause you spend all day making rude comments to anyone and everyone you can. Truly pathetic. you could have made a comment about churn.. or advantages of switching.. but i would guess your not educated since your arguments are shallow without any thing of substance! lol. you live in my area??? you know where I am??? you know the store i'm speaking of.. uh.. NO!! so your speaking about things you know absolutely nothing about.. your just a poopy face ;)
silly Engadget.
the sad thing is, there is this big campaign to promote the DROID but the only "customer" they are targeting is males. they need to revamp their idea of the DROID. it needs to attracted more customer both male and FEMALE. on verizon's part (i think) its terrible marketing. with the iPhone, tmoblies g1, and mytouch, they attracted both male and female customers. verizon is loosing half the battle if their really looking to push this phone as hard as they are. The could be pulling in some serious dough if they change things up a bit. not saying make the phone more "girly" just make it more universally accepted and not so masculine, FEMALES like smart phones too. (btw this is from a 21yo males perspective)
@ikicksit450 I guess that is fair. But why not just hit and dominate one niche? I mean HTC has got the large amount of coders who like to buy their phones because of the hackability. That carried HTC for a few years up until now when their phones are really hitting it into the mainstream. So why not just hit that one niche and do it well?
I am female and they appealed to me! I have been wanting an iphone but I am unwilling to compromise my service to get it (ie switch to AT&T).
@djt well the thing is verizon is such a large company they really should switch there gears and not make smart phones appealed towards males, as much as they do. it makes it look like males are the only people that want smart phones. there ad campaigns and phones a like need to take some pointers from t-mobile and at&t. their commercials and phones appeal to such a large number of different people males and females alike. and lets face it commercials are everything when it comes to marketing and also the "sex appeal" of the phone is a huge factor. the other strategy they look like their taking is...lets dominate one niche once we complete that mission, lets take the cake and own all female and male. i feel like verizon is smart enough to figure this out. most likely they have a plan already set in action its only a matter of time. verizon is doing great things, i think their in a "new beginning stage".
I am NOT good with technology. I just traded my blackberry for the Droid. I LOVE THIS THING!!! Anytime I cannot figure out how to do something I ask the phone and it tells me! It is faster than my home DSL connection and allows me to tap into any wireless network available if needed. The free apps and games seem unlimited. I cannot say enough good things about this phone. It is everything I could have asked for and more!!!
That is a kick-ass commercial!!! Kick-ass!!!
Anyone else get the feeling that Apple would rather the world be a 1984 world? All their products are the same. All the software that apple makes have some sort of limits to it. Kinda ironic since they were the ones that had the most successful commerial in history with their hammer throw 1984 tv spot.
Needs a new video link now, this is set to private.
