HP lets iPAQ Glisten out of the box
The AT&T-bound iPAQ Glisten from HP has been unboxed for our viewing pleasure, video of which can be found immediately after the break. If you're not in such a hurry though, you'll want to know it's an AMOLED-fronted, Qualcomm-powered (533MHz) WinMo 6.5 device, which brings the BlackBerry form factor sans the RIM user experience, but plus a touchscreen. Another thing to note is that AT&T's online store will be the only place to get it, at the already announced $179.99 after rebates on a two-year deal. The video does a good job of comparing HP's return to the mobile space with a pair of similar devices, and we're left with the impression that it's a pretty chunky machine, but as usual we recommend seeing it for yourself -- and you already know where to find it.

first look and I thought it was the blackberry curve. but hey it has a touchscreen!
@mikmik111 Being a n owner of a BB Curve 8330 that's what I thought, too - it looks like the Windows and Escape keys are in the same places as the [BB ]Menu and Escape keys.
@mikmik111
I thought the same thing. I was like, hasn't this phone been made already - like 4 years ago.
he didnt even turn it on... -_-
@storm
yeah, was waiting for that too...
@storm I know. So I clicked related videos thinking he turns it on:

But you know what? Nope. He doesn't. D'oh!
@storm
Becasue it looks like crap. I saw one about five months ago and they kept saying it will improve....Its typical HP JUyunK
@storm If it's like his other videos, he'll go though it in a multi part process. Unboxing then Hardware Tour, then Sofware Tour
Does anybody else think that missing the Blackberry user experience is a good thing? I haven't owned a Blackberry in a while, but I always thought it was less usable than WinMo (which honestly wasn't that amazing itself)
@Chefgon
Personally, I've found the BB user experience to be more responsive and more predictable than WinMo. It really comes down to taste a lot of the time. I would never buy a Windows Mobile phone, because every one I've used has irritated me to no end. BlackBerry isn't perfect, but I'd consider a BB phone for myself before WinMo. Lots of people feel the opposite way, so this may be right up some alleys.
@CtrlBurn: Eh, I perused around my friend's BlackBerry Flip (with his permission of course), and I found the user interface was very clunky, the navigation rather difficult, the features to be rather skimpy in comparison to other cheap flip phones, and not all impressive.
Though that may be indicative of just the flip phone, the fact they're trying to sell this is laughable. It seems my friend only bought it because of the well-known BlackBerry brand, but WinMo 6.5 seems a lot more better than what I experienced, when 6.5 isn't even really that special.
Please don't review it!
Way to follow hp!
Why even bother getting in to the smartphone (and I know they were already here) game if you are going to design some crappy old school WinMo phone that thirty other companies have already done? Seriously, aside from a nice screen, which is wasted on this device, and a slightly faster processor, what is so different about this compared to the Q, Blackjack, etc.?
how can we see if for ourselves if its online only? will it be in stores? if it is, doesn't that mean its not online only?
@Jman8 I'm pretty sure he said online only, so it won't be in stores. I personally don't like buying things without handling them physically; I waited to buy the archos 5 android till it was at best buy.
@das boot i got that much, but my first sentence is the last line of the topic. they said we can see it in stores-- hence the confusion
Eh. $180 for this thing is okay I guess, but I don't get why a company who isn't really known for its cell phones is charging that high a price for a device like this. Another $20 and you could get the HTC Touch Pro 2, HTC Imagio, or Samsung Omnia II, three far superior WinMo devices on Verizon, all of which run (or can run) Windows Mobile 6.5.
And honestly, if you need the landscape keyboard, the Samsung Jack on AT&T ($100) and HTC Ozone on Verizon ($50) are more bang for their buck even if they're lower end. This phone gets a great big "meh" in my books. Better luck next time HP...
Looks like it has the same atrocious keyboard as the 910c/912c. That was a seriously unpleasant keyboard to use. (Looks at last year's damn HP brick still sitting on the desk with iPhone and Bold 9700 nearby)
I was just thinking that what if they were wrong about the contents of the FedEx bag? And when he opened it, it was something else...
@Rick James
Then we wouldn't be seeing this video...
@edoles
Obviously, but it would be a pretty funny vid if it was something ala Joystiq did the other day with that MW2 Javelin post...
fugly! (imho)
KIRF Curve Touch?
The only problem with HP is it's ability to let the consumer down year after year.
Each time they produced a consumer product, they dropped it after a couple of years.
They use to make the best digitizing tablet...dropped
Best compact pc...dropped
Best dot matrix printer...dropped
And the list goes on and on !
Buy this phone and I guarantee that in 2 years it will be forgotten !
Hey it's a Blackberry, but with WinMo instead. Err, I guess HP didn't get the memo that Blackberry is currently losing lots of market share to HTC and the like.
NOTE: Blackberry: when your competition is rapidly innovating and you're still making products strikingly similar to the ones you made 10 years ago, you're going to lose marketshare. HP: You guys are so far behind you don't even realize you're following the loser.
Another mobile HP fail. Lets make a touch screen that looks poor. So poor in fact lets not show it..Then lets compare it with one device that is well over year and half old and the other that is close to obsolete too.
am i the only person that feels like this guy is extremely off the mark with his comments. really thin, attractive device. i can honestly say that has to be one of most hideous smartphones ive ever seen.
the only thing that annoys me sometimes is that HP is perhaps the only company that enable usb to host in their micro usb ports in some of their mobile phones.
They make phones that i don't like but they have a feature that i want :-/
""THE SMALLEST CHARGER YOU EVER SEEN''"THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
