LG's projector-laden eXpo smartphone gets demonstrated on video
The projector phone mishmash idea has been around (and even demonstrated) for quite some time now, but only recently have we seen one of these two-pronged, hunchbacked monsters land on a major US carrier. LG's eXpo is carrying that crown (or burden, depending on perspective), and while we're itching to get one into our own labs for testing, we'll happily pass along what looks to be the world's first real good look at this handset in action. Make no mistake -- the DLP-based beamer affixed on the back adds quite the bulge, but the actual video performance looks about as good as any dedicated pico projector that we've seen to date. Have a peek past the break to see for yourself.

wrinkles
@madocs 'Donut wrinkles' So a Phone and a LCD projector.. what could be more insane than that? The only caveat though, is should it look as fat as that one? http://bit.ly/LG-Expo-detailed-specs-and-review
It got junks in the trunk!
Bahahahahaha that's ridiculous. How is that supposed to fit in your pocket?
@joebish That's what she said. Haha, I couldn't help myself :P.
@joebish
CEOs have big, fatty pockets.
@joebish you might have to by a man purse.
@joebish i believe the purpose of a removable teeny projector is that you can carry it with you if you plan to use it for anything at all. its almost no hassle compared to the huge projectors that i have in class. i also don't see how it could NOT be that big.
Make it detachable and I'll take it!
@Evan
Oh.. but it IS!
@Eternity
That's what...she said?
@Evan
If you had watched the video you would've seen that it is completely detachable.
Engadget should've made that more clear in the post.
"ah, excuse me sir"
"yes"
"you appear to have a large tumor on your back"
"oh, dear god! why--how the?.. thankyou!" *runs away*
" ... " *confused*
I accidentally our sex tape.
@Eternity Sounds terrible!
@Xudd
Stupid projector phone >_<
Now the whole office knows about it...
That's pretty impressive, actually.
battery life: 3 minutes.
@artist
:3
Its like the first mobile, clunky and with flaws etc.... Give it ten years and it'll all be sorted
I likey, now if it just had android.
A few years ago i never imagined that such a thing would be possible in 2009. Ok you have to be in total darkness to get a decent wall picture and it's a bit bulky but damn, in five or ten years will we even need desktops and monitors any more? Power users yeah but the average user?
@(Unverified)
Average consumer yes.
Power user no. Remember we are always on the bleeding edge. Average consumers are slow to adopt to new tech.
My prediction:
Phones will be a thing of the past and maybe even laptops. What will remain are "personal companions" (P.C) as powerful as modern notebooks but with projector output and foldable displays probably no bigger than an iPhone. Making VOIP calls with 100mbs internet. Probably attach any keyboard or gaming controller you want to it.
This has nothing on Bret's home-made cameraphone from Flight of the Conchords:

@(Unverified) LOL - That made me laugh.
phone with a big old ass
At first I thought this was an iPhone KIRF from Deal Extreme for $80
hose icons have a familiar color scheme.. but they made the corners sharp 90 angles so it cant be an iPhone rip off!
eww @ that thumb. And problem fitting into pocket much?
WTF on second thought this is stupid!
Hmmm let me make a toaster phone, oh wait let me make a car phone
So basically we are taking random products and slapping them into a cell phone that HAS NO ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS IN RELATION TO THE CELL PHONE.
damn consumers are F-in stupid to eat up this shite
@NAME
In 2009, PHONES CAN PLAY VIDEOS AND PHOTOS!!!!! :O Amazing, isn't it?
@NAME
"Hmmm let me make a toaster phone, oh wait let me make a car phone"
First of all, car phones are (or were) real products. Second, since this is Windows Mobile, it has PowerPoint on it. Since you're obviously not familiar with productivity or having a job, I'll let you know that PowerPoint is for business presentations and such. Presentations often make use of visual aides put onto things called "slides." When these "slides" are put in a logical sequence and often accompanied by an aural explanation, they are called presentations. One such program that handles this process digitally is the aforementioned PowerPoint. So, yes, this projector attached to a phone does have an actual use. Not to mention pictures and video, as the above posted said.
I'm sure you thought it was stupid when phones began popping up with keyboards. "GAWD, I MIGHT AS WELL MAKE A TYPEWRITER PHONE!" you may have exclaimed. Of course, as an iPhone fan, your phone doesn't have a keyboard so perhaps you're unaware of that, too.
@NAME
I should also add, I've read that this phone may never even reach the "consumer" market. It's most likely only going to be offered to business customers.
they should have learned from nikon s1000pj design
@htd
This is DLP sir
It's kind of sad when a phone manufacturer has to pretty much completely hide the UI of the OS that the phone runs on. That might tell you something about WinMobile. Blah.
I think a projector might be a better fit with a laptop. Or until this is a 2nd or 3rd-gen product and the projector part is dramatically reduced in size.
Still though, for those that just don't "get it" - this projector + phone is vastly smaller than what would have been available to a presenter just a few short years ago. He would have had to lug around a laptop to run the presentation, and a separate projector the size of shoebox. Now one combo device can do it all and then you can unhook the projector when you don't need it.
@Hazdaz
Yeah it tells you they can use a powerful OS and just make some relatively (in comparison to making a whole OS) simple code to differentiate it yet still have a huge ecosystem of applications.
@Hazdaz
"It's kind of sad when a phone manufacturer has to pretty much completely hide the UI of the OS that the phone runs on. That might tell you something about WinMobile. Blah."
I totally agree. That's why I love my HTC Android phone with Sense UI. Wait, what's that? Oh, Sense UI is a version of TouchFlo 3D, the same thing "covering up" that horrible thing called Windows Mobile? And it's the same interface that covers up the HD2? I see... well, uh, Windows Mobile still suxxx!
@Hazdaz
It shows that it's a very functional OS, however it just looks bad.
That can be fixed.
fat as hell.
How is it Nikon is able to fit a projector in their camera with nary a size increase and LG has to lump that massive tumor to the back of theirs?
Hey commenters, the projector is DETACHABLE! Did you watch the video? Don't think of this as a big ass phone. Think fairly sleek, fast snapdragon processor with sliding keyboard with projector option.
This Phone Weak... They stole the idea and made a piece of garbage... The Logic Wireless Bolt has a way better design and more features... I bet that thing (LG) heats up like a toaster!

Medianamente interesantes....sino que pasan lol
What got me was the amount of extra skin that dude has from his thumb to his wrist! It's like he needs a circumcision for his hand!
Honestly, given the size of current pico projectors what were you expecting form factor wise?
I definitely would not want to have a hunchback phone in my pocket. It's good to integrate pico projector into the phone but it makes the phone extremely bulky for something we don't really use all the time.
If putting huge bulges on devices becomes accepted then they can expand the iphone battery life too!
By the way everyone... THE PROJECTOR IS DETACHABLE!
@sonicyoof Precisely, so if you want to take it out with you then put the projector in a different pocket. ¬¬.
