Motorola's Opus One leaks out, whispers of 'iDEN' and 'Android' overheard
There's an excruciatingly small amount of detail to go on right now, but the Boy Genius has managed to snag a few tasty shots of what could be the world's first iDEN Android handset. The Opus One (as it's currently codenamed) certainly smacks of the myTouch 3G in terms of design, though the bottom-mounted ball is obviously replaced with what appears to be an intensely large home button. Hit the source link for a couple more images, and drop your wildest estimations of a specs list in comments below.

I love how this article seems to have broken the site
"though the bottom-mounted ball is obviously replaced with what appears to be an intensely large home button"
Only problem being, the home button is next to it. (On the left in this picture)
So I assume it's a 5-way d-pad...
@TT Thats funny bro.
@TT or could be some sort of optical Dpad ?
It has to be CDMA/EV-DO primarily, as iDen data would be, um, a little sluggish on Android.
@(Unverified) What data on iden? Iden can hardly handle WAP pages.
@yankees368 Hence my sarcasm. :) Data needs to run at least 100kbps to be useful on a handheld device, not 20kbps.
blah, pretty ugly design. AND iDen?!
But props to moto for crackin out many android devices.
Bezel... Ughh
DPAD TRACKBALL HARDWAREBUTTONS.. all ridiculous on a touchscreen phone...
@(Unverified) You'd be shocked at how useful the trackball on the HTC devices is. Much more efficient for hitting little tiny links on web pages than the iPhone's "stab in the dark" method.
@(Unverified)
The trackball on HTC Android phones are the bee's knees! I never thought it would be useful, but I use it quite a bit.
looks ugly but if this phone goes to boost mobile or some other super cheap iden network that would be awesome since boost mobile have low prices for there plans.
@saturnblackhole When i saw iDen, I though Boost. Yes there are some people that would flock to this, But it doesnt really fit the demographic.
@Banksta3 Boost needs this (if that's where it's going). Here in Philly, lots of people can spend the money on the phone but have bad credit and can't/don't wanna pay the deposit for a monthly plan.
home buttons are useless. they can just have this gesture to be able to go to the home screen. Like swipe upward from the pre.
Android + IDEN = Cool Times
Aw, Opus. I heart that penguin! And Bloomfield County!
Opus? It sure looks as attractive as its name.
iPhone's better.
@townes66 LoL. Is this what the iPhone has been reduced to? There are 3 year old phones that are better than this.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Sprint, make this a tri-band CDMA 1900MHz EVDO Rev A/850MHz for roaming AND iDen. That would certainly be nice if we had the uniqueness of the iDen network PTT features with the added bonus of EVDO with the ability to roam if necessary off the Sprint network (problem with current Motorola IC* series iDen/CDMA phones i.e. moto "Blend", no roaming capabilities) iDEN sucks for data! Oh and the phone should have a Snapdragon processor, that would be cool too ;)
k thnx Sprint.
@Shawn
Considering the fact that the hybrid phones on nextel (IC902, IC502, etc) were discontinued and Sprint dropping QChat forever forget about this android phone being a hybrid phone....This phone on iden network will be a joke.
@Shawn
This phone looks horrible. Do you really want it to be the first Android with good specs?
Wildest imaginations eh?
Well...
There's been talk about the Apple Mac Pro getting exclusivity on the new Core i9 processor.
Wrong!
Turns out that this little guy's got exclusivity on that little piece of tech. Thanks to a flux capacitor running the active cooling it can run that as well as all of the other toys that we will get to in a minute. The flux capacitor works by maintaining a spinning disk that -at its outer edge- moves at over 88 miles per hour, opening a time rift and allowing the phone to vent all of its heat to the island of Krakatoa (in approximately 1882). Thus, the phone produces barely any noticeable heat. Though you can fire up the "warm me up" app, which instead vents the heat into your pocket, making you feel nice and toasty on those cold winter nights.
As for bands, because of the integrated flux capacitor, it can in fact surf on all bands simultaneously. In addition to the advertised iDEN capability, the phone also features LTE, Wifi, AM, FM, Wimax, HSDPA+, QUG (the next standard after the great Carrierpocalypse of 2015), EDGE, EVDO rev. A-Z (you'll hear about that later too). Plus a number of legacy standards. It can do this through its revolutionary Morph-O-Tenna, which can change its shape in order to send/receive on whatever wavelength it wishes. A firmware upgrade will allow it to access even more bands.
As for a screen, though the press shots don't capture it, is 1000 ppi. This allows it to show whatever it pleases, and thanks to the processor and dual GPUs (you wouldn't recognize the name for a few years yet) it can output quad-HD video wirelessly to an included base station that includes hdmi, lightpeak, dvi, vga, displayport, and a few that you haven't heard of yet.
The camera is a marvel of engineering, and actually integrates a new sensor that shifts itself so that you can get a dslr quality image out of a cameraphone sensor. The trick is that the sensor shifts itself back and forth in order to get more light per pixel. It shifts itself fast enough that exposures up to 1/8000 of a second are possible, as well as full manual exposure and a bulb shot mode (a first for a cameraphone).
There is also a front facing camera of a similar design that allows for video conferencing. There will be a firmware upgrade about a month after release allowing for holographic calls and viewing as well. How the firmware does this is a trade secret.
The phone nominally runs android, but also comes bundled with windows 7 and a specialized linux distribution. Thanks to a revolutionary new memory system, it has 32 TB of memory, backed up to a data center run by Motorola in an undisclosed location.
While you may be thinking that the battery life on this phone may be about 12 seconds (less if you actually want to do things on it...), but that is where you are wrong. The phone uses an antimatter battery, and can charge through a standard usb port, though the battery has been estimated to last more than three years (they haven't been able to run it down yet).
While the price is as-of-yet undisclosed, one can expect something around the usual $199 on contract, with prices falling precipitously following its release.
I'm pretty excited for this phone.
@Vwampage
lul
@Vwampage DO WANT!
@Vwampage omg I can't wait. But I just wish it used ZPM insyead of having to vent the heat across the space-time continuum. :/
Please, oh please tell this phone doesn't have that shitty Qualcomm processor.
@SomePerson
r u kidding? You think they'd put a state of the art processor into this hideous package?
@Vwampage lets hope we can get an app for time travelling. You forgot to mention it will be bundled with win 8,9 too. And,actually, if you think antimatter is dangerous, you can access any APP in the world wirelessly. Fart apps are already being developed to utilize 12.1 stereo speakers of 500 watt. And this ugly piece of plastic is only a shell-it can be transformed to look like any device you like.
I wish it was Nokia, not crappy motorola
iDen is dead
iDen ? Could this mean Boost Mobile customers may get some Android love? Android + Prepaid with unlimited everything for $50 = pure win !
Android iDEN from Motorola is old news and confirmed. Circa July '09
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2350949,00.asp
Nextel and Boost's iDen technology will still feel love from Motorola, with the manufacturer confirming some Nextel/Boost compatible Android smartphones.
"We appear to have pretty good traction with iDen," Jha said.
@(Unverified) good call
iDen is the technology used on those ultra cheap Boost mobile/Virgin phones with the working class/blue collar demographic?
@poematik14 Boost Mobile: Yes. Virgin Mobile: No.
@poematik14
iDen is the 2 way radio for NEXTEL utilizing speech compression and time division
@poematik14
Or someone looking not to get ripped off from the Big 3 perhaps???
Virgin uses Sprint's EVDO/1xx network, not iDen. As much as I would love only paying $50/mo for unlimited everything, the horrible data speeds you get wouldn't be worth saving some $$. Imagine getting GPRS type speeds, iDen is about the same if not worse.
Well, since sprint is reviving the iDen network (aka everyone left it, so it works again), it doesn't surprise me, however I'm hoping data uses EVDO and not iden , as it's 14.4kb max speed
test
Wonder if they get sued by Opus One vineyards for copyright infringement. :D DAMN good (though pricey wine BTW, can't speak for the phone though yet. ;)
