Cowboys Stadium first to demo real time conversion of 2D HDTV video into 3D

Update: We've received a quick note from the company to say that the actual feed on the Cowboys' megatron will be based on old school glasses-needy anaglyphs, since the humongous structure isn't capable of doing the more sophisticated stuff.
3D Sports: Closer Than You Think
Premiere Event at Cowboys Stadium:
The Dallas Cowboys Continue their Tradition of Innovation and Will Host the First Ever Public Demonstration of HDlogix Real Time Conversion of 2D HDTV Video Into 3D to be Held Prior to the Dallas Cowboys-San Diego Chargers Game December 13 at Cowboys Stadium
To Be Followed by First Ever Live 3D Broadcast to be Shown on World's Largest HDTV Display
WHAT: The Dallas Cowboys and HDlogix will demonstrate HDlogix's new ImageIQ 3D™ technology converting standard HD video signals from 2D to 3D in real time.
A press conference will be held prior to the game in which the ImageIQ 3D technology will be demonstrated. Then, at halftime and during the Dallas Cowboys-San Diego Chargers game, the Cowboys will use HDlogix technology to power the first live 3D broadcast ever to be shown on the world's largest HDTV display at Cowboys Stadium. Measuring 160 feet in length and 72 feet in height on the sideline boards-the largest video board installation in the world-the four board video cluster, suspended 90 feet directly over the center of the playing surface, stretches from the 20-yard line to the 20-yard line.
The development of ImageIQ 3D was based on HDlogix's expertise in live video communications and super-resolution products. ImageIQ 3D incorporates sophisticated algorithms such as real-time optical flow and image structure analysis capabilities to reconstruct the entire geometry of the scene contained within each video frame. Unlike other 3D conversion solutions, ImageIQ 3D runs in real-time, without the need for any manual intervention. ImageIQ 3D outputs true 3D stereo video suitable for display on screens ranging from ordinary televisions to the world's largest HDTV.
WHO: HDlogix is a leader in imaging and video-based products for the world's consumers, entertainment companies and service providers. HDlogix plans to formally unveil its technology next month at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. http://hdlogix.com/

... but glasses are cool O_o
Sounds like bullshit. To have autostereoscopy you have to send a different image to each eye. So without glasses you either have to track the person (singular)'s head, or use some kind of lenticular system which a) probably won't work on such a huge display since you are so far from it, and b) requires you to sit perfectly still in certain locations.
Shenigans!
The 2D->3D bit sounds more plausible, although it will never be as good as true 3D and is going to have loads of artifacts.
@(Unverified)
They thought that at first. Then said "Naaaaa, it'll work."
@(Unverified) Hmm, maybe these guys are straight up lying, or maybe they know more about 3D displays than you?
@(Unverified)
True 3D, as in real life. Wake me when it happens. No glasses for me. Kthxbai.
@(Unverified) We watched the 3D conversion of Nightmare Before Christmas and it was a waste. It was almost indistinguishable from the 2D version. It's nearly impossible to do good 3D after the fact. It has to be filmed that way (unless it's CGI).
looks like they may want to reconnect the controller :)
Cool! I'll be at this game!!
I can't imagine that they'd ever let a company experiment on this magnitude so someone pretty high up the food chain must have seen a demo of this and thought it worked pretty well. I can't wait to hear about the results.
This thing is huge...
We went to see the Star Wars in concert there. The concert website bragged about them having a 3 story HD display behind the orcherstra.
They could fit 4.5 of their screens in one side of the large display.
I hope someone who is at the game can give us a first hand account this.
Maybe take some photos so we can see too? ;)
So leading your division is considered bad football? Man, the Detroit Lions must be the gods of the sport...
Too bad they can't use this to win more games. *frown*
Yeah, there is no way anyone will come back from this impressed.
"ImageIQ 3D incorporates sophisticated algorithms such as real-time optical flow"
"Real-time optical flow" was described in a paper published in 1994. Man, if that's sophisticated, just think about the pentium pro!
I will be there. I will update everyone on monday
Now if they could only Host a Football Game that meant something!
@SLINC
The Big XII Championship game, which decided whether or not Texas went to Pasadena for the Championship game, didn't mean anything?
And unless the Cowboys totally implode (completely possible, they like to do that at the end of the year), they'll make it to the playoffs, and if they manage to beat Phillie at home, manage to not blow it at Washington (and come in, it's the Redskins), and somehow pull out a victory against either the Saints or the Chargers, they'll probably still be the top seed, and host a playoff game there as well.
Those don't matter either? Weird. I thought they did.
Big 12 Championship, I will give that one, essentially a Playoff Game. I was more referring to the Cowboys, because unless you win a playoff game (Which they have not done overall since 2001), then they have won nada.
I know, I know... They have been to Blaaaaa Superbowls and won many of them... That is great, that is awesome, but we are in a world of "What have you done for me lately..."
I wonder how 1080p looks on this screen. I wonder if you start to see artifacts.
They're 8-4 and in the lead of the NFC East! And they have the hardest schedule amongst winning teams from here on out!
@Hopper
Yeah I don't understand this. They just lost against the Giants but they are still doing quite well.
@Hopper You don't actually expect engadget writers to know anything about sports, do you? I'm a Skins fan and even I won't say they aren't doing well on the field although there have been some hiccups.
@sitruc Really? You should know full well that won-lost records don't mean much. Look at the Broncos winning in bunches at first, then losing in bunches, or the Titans losing like mad, then winning like mad. Even those teams, who you'd charitably describe as outside Superbowl candidates, are manifestly better than the Cowboys this year (see WK 4 for evidence). Dallas has beaten Tampa, Oakland, Kansas City, Seattle, and the Skins a couple of times, which of those teams is heading to the playoffs again? Which of them even has a winning record?
In fact, you'll find Engadget writers' NFL knowledge is so deep and fundamental that it flies right under your radar. :)
It's an experiment.
Distance, lighting, and social response ("I have to wear they stupid googles vs. my beer hat?!) will cause it to fail.
Anyway, why is there so much over hype of 3D? I mean with the lighter glasses, digitally controlled video for 3D, it still looks like the crap 30yrs ago. Augmented reality is a much better user experience with digital video.
Hey, the Cowboys are 8 and 4, thats pretty good.
i just watch the cowboy games in hopes of seeing one of the kickers finally hit the giant TV. that will make my day when it finally happens!
@alkaline They actually did already, I think it was the first game against the Tennessee Titans
@(Unverified) oh man! how did i miss that, haha. guess i need to hit up youtube.
Sooooo - lemme get this straight. Fans are going to attend a football game that they are watching live - in 3D, so they can watch the game on the big screen in 3D? WTF!
@ibgarrett
it's that the actual game is so fucking boring people just go there to watch tv
Let's see the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight at Dallas Stadium!!
Why don't they work on winning in December.
Went to the game. They did live 3d during the 3rd quarter. Without the glasses it was distorted, with the glasses it was awful. The typical HD stream was better.
About 6 minutes into the 3rd quarter, The anouncer asked, How about the 3d." Then 80,000 boos groaned and quickly they switched back to HD 1080 2d and everyone cheered.
It was a step back for 3d in my opinion, surprised Jerry allowed that crap.
