We know it's the
N900 you're jonesing for, but if you're looking to let those "other guys" put
Maemo 5 through the ringer while you continue to use an OS that's been around the block, Nokia's got two more for you to choose from starting today. Both the QWERTY-packin'
E72 ($407) and eager-to-route
5800 Navigation Edition have started to ship to America (according to the company, anyway), with the former listed as "coming soon" on Nokia's webstore and as "in stock on December 10th" over
at Amazon. The latter is available to order now for $299 sans contract, so good luck holding off for
Google Maps Navigation to make this thing look dated.
Update: Seems this is the
second time Nokia has stated that its E72 was available in the US, so we'd probably wait for at least another notification or two before pulling the trigger. Can't ever be too careful!
"...while you continue to use an OS that's been around the block..."
Symbian's a whore? Well that explains a lot!
@nelagster
Symbian is MY kind of woman! =P
"so good luck holding off for Google Maps Navigation to make this thing look dated."
At least this does not require expensive data contracts to use and works in areas without cell coverage.
@(Unverified) Lol
@(Unverified) Is this Nokia's navigation good? You can use offline google maps. gMapMaker is good for it and you don't need hold many worthless data on the SD card.
@praetor87
The Nokia navigation is pretty good, I've been using garmin on mine primarily but the Nokia one works just as good.
@praetor87
Oh yeah , Nokia Maps is really good... works very very well
@(Unverified) I agree. I'm getting sick at how people think any phone is capable of being a GPS navigator if you have a data plan and Google Maps. Not at all.
First of all, I refuse to pay ridiculous amounts of money for worthless data when I can pick up any WiFi hotspot anywhere. I don't find I need data.
If I had data, then how would I be able to navigate around Europe during my vacations? Pay a hefty roaming charge? How about no.
This summer, I went to Europe to visit relatives, and when I would go out by myself to meet someone at a specific location I had no idea about, I would open my Nokia N95, go over to the Maps and use the integrated GPS Satellite receiver to get satellite signals free of charge that lock within 1-2 minutes and are VERY accurate.
Thanks, I'll take my integrated GPS receiver over a data plan anyday.
@Dhruv Bhutani I've never had any issues with it. It's Ovi Maps now and they made significant changes. It's a very solid application, and when I have the ability to use a WiFi connection and Google Maps, or Ovi Maps to look up a location, I always use Ovi Maps.
I too have to say that Ovi Maps is working really swell! And one of the best things about it is that you can download all the maps in the world for free and just keep them in your phone. Who knows the next time you'll end up in Timbuktu, glad you DL'd the maps so you can "navigate" your way home!:-)
And Nokia seems to on a roll here, releasing phones in a weekly manner for US, good to see!
@ALBGunner04
Is ovi maps free? the last time i tried to use Nokia Maps it cost money. Garmin works great and is free if you dont want to pay ;).
@(Unverified)
Ovi Maps is free. It's only the turn by turn navigation that costs plus detailed city maps.
@MarkAnderson
Yes, making it worthless as a navigation device since it cannot do nav without their license. I think after the ridiculous prices Nokia charges for their product ($600+ for an unlocked device), that they would license you the navigation for free... but that's just me. I am not paying $63.99 MORE to Nokia, thanks. If I really need it to navigate for me, I'll stick with my Garmin GPS.
@Slappy Wag
But I'm pretty sure that the 5800 Navigation Edition is called that because it comes with voice navigation already included.
As an E71 fan, i must say that i don't see anything the E72 really offers that would want to make an e71 owner upgrade.
Had they improved the screen at all, size, resolution or given it the n86 screen (turned sideways of course) i probably would of went for it, but for the most part the e72 is an e71 in a new housing.
Nokia has until this coming summer to show me something new (that works on AT&T, wish the n900 did) before i jump ship. Just too many complaints about the n97 for me to get on board for $500.
If the price hit's $399 i'd consider it worth the risk, but until then, forget it.
@(Unverified)
Agreed that $400 is too much to get me to buy an E72 to replace my E71. If I didn't have an E71 already, though, the E72 would be much nicer. The 3.5mm jack and better camera would be very nice things to have.
@(Unverified)
There is a good summary of the differences between E71 and E72 here:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/reviews/item/Review_Nokia_E72.php
Looks like a nice upgrade to me.
@(Unverified) Not interested in the faster CPU, optical dpad, 3.5mm audio, digital compass and 7.2Mbps HSDPA? The E71 is a perfectly good phone even now but I do think the E72 has legitimate improvements. They could have done more, of course, AMOLED would have been nice, but there's room for the phones to co-exsist.
@digitalat0m
While there is some upgrade to it, but it's not much.
The e71 was never slow, of course we all love for phones to be faster, but it's still not a purchase point to upgrade from an e71 in this case.
Really, the software looks like a downgrade.
No internet radio? That's enough right there to keep many people from buying it. Maybe in a firmware update? If the 5800 and n97 never got it, i wouldn't hold my breath.
As of right now, other than the compass and better camera, i see nothing that i couldn't just do with the e71.
@(Unverified)
fair enough :) I'm rocking a N82 right now waiting for my perfect upgrade, and I hope it comes soon since my battery life is somewhere around 1hour now :| N900 looks like the one for me :) but if i wanted a BB style device the E72 would probably be in the running.
For streaming radio there is a good last.fm app called mobbler, if you like last.fm that is :)
@(Unverified) I agree. I bought the E71 knowing that the E72 was coming out (but also when the priced dropped as a result a few months ago).
The optical trackpad would be nice to have, but the spacebar is wayy too small. The E71's is small enough for a heavy texter.
I have an application that allows the flashlight functionality. The E71 is a terrible flashlight, but it is better than nothing in a pinch.
The noise cancellation, MicroUSB charging, and compass would be nice, but are they worth an extra $120?
I have to laugh at the podcasting comments, I never even knew the E71 has a podcasting app, and it's worthless anyways, since its not in Apple's ecosystem. That's what an iPod is for.
@(Unverified)
I use it to listen to CNN podcast throughout the day. I laugh at the fact you mentioned ipod. Hrmm since you dont use the app it is useless.
Yawn and meh.....E72 looks nice and is probably a great phone it feels a little late and behind at this point though.
@southern78 It has its uses though. More of a Bold competitor but without RIM software.
Keep in mind, however, while it's not maemo, the E72 is toting a 10.2 mbit HSDPA and 2 mbit HSUPA modem for AT&T's 3g network, a 600 mhz ARM 11 processor, and a big BP-4L battery. It's no slouch by any means. Shame Nokia hasn't implemented penta-band 3g to cover all bases and prevent duplicate versions of models. I'm sure there's more to it than just adding more hardware, but dreaming is nice =)
Woot! This phone can used both Tmobile and AT&T bands for 3G in the US !!!!
* E72-1 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 900/2100 HSDPA
* E72-2 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/1900 HSDPA
* E72-3 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/2100 HSDPA
* Offline mode
http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-e72/specifications
@TikiTeko WCDMA would be the band you should look for, AT&T uses 850 and T-Mobile uses 1700 for 3g bands =/ while the phone will definitely work on EDGE (the quad band EGSM), there's currently no handset that embraces both American-specific bands.
@prince so 3G only with AT&T?
@TikiTeko Yup. They all support quad-band GSM/EDGE, so world travelers who want to SIM swap to get the phone to work outside of the US are well covered.
@TikiTeko i dont think so, isnt tmobile 3G 1700Mhz?
@TikiTeko No 3G for Tmobile :( It needs BOTH 2100MHz AND 1900MHz bands together for 3G on Tmobile, not on different phones.
@(Unverified) OOPS! I mean BOTH 1700MHz and 2100MHz.
This is odd... I saw the E72 on sale at the NYC Nokia Store before the first announcement on Black Friday weekend. I wonder whether they're talking about different stores or different flavors.
I guess everyone here will make me ask it! Are those front-facing cameras going to remain on the US versions? I would love for video calling to start (seriously) in the US!
@imso919
if your service provider/carrier doesn't support video calling on their network there isn't much you can do about it.
@(Unverified) I understand that, but what I was referring to was what appears to be a front-facing camera that has been left on the phone. I wondering if this was the US version or was it just a stock photo of the phones. Everyone knows that the cameras always get removed from the US versions! I realize that this is because of the carriers not supporting video calling yet but maybe there is a new movement brewing for 2010? It seems that the only time that front-facing cameras are ever brought up is when a new iphone is being released.
Engadget, when reporting new 3g phones for the US, PLEASE go A LITTLE further and tell us if they will be ATT or Tmobile 3g compatible—this little bit of information would be helpful in know whether or not the news in relevant to me.
So I've been using the 5800 navigation edition for about a week now. Its a nice change of pace from the iPhone 2.5G/3G I've been using for 2 years. Its definitely more of a phone than a computer like the iPhone is. But I've always been a fan of Nokia and Its pretty good for a first touchscreen try~
also got it on sale black friday for $199 no contract :)
I've been using an N78 with map 3.0 for a year now, I travel a lot and I have gps and maps without the need for a data connection, works great, all the POI are there, all of America and half of western Europe takes only 2Gb of my 8Gb card. I just ordered via bing on walmart $270 + tax (-20% cash back = $230) with a $50 mail in rebate from Nokia (if you sign up for OVI (free) download coupon via Amazon or Newegg) for a total of $180. Navigation with turn by turn all over the world, no data required is a better deat than iPhone or droid in my opinion.
Look at all these Nokia users coming out of the closet! Maybe we should have a Nokia Users Anonymous group! =D
@Po As much as I enjoy my iPhone, it will still never encroach the relationship most users had/have with their N95!
@Sam of the Sun The N95 is one legendary phone. It still accompanies me by my side up to this day, and will be for a long time.
No internetradio in this,thats real bad.
@Gero
Well, just download it, and install.
this is cheap! now this is what you call a phone + gps! garmin listen to nokia now, cause ur nuviphone is dead now.
The phone is available, is shipping (I received mine on Dec 10), has a front-facing camera, and generally performs a lot better than the E71. Having used both, the small space bar is not a factor, and otherwise, it has a lot of UI improvements over the E71 that make it a worthwhile upgrade.
