UK man builds life-sized Dalek, furthers intergalactic evil
Sci-fi fandom and the DIY ethic go hand in hand -- and for evidence, you need only look at the large number of Star Trek and Star Wars-themed projects we've seen in this space over the years. Still, few of them have achieved the scope of the full-sized Dalek that Rob Bosher built for about £700 (roughly $1,140). Powered by an electric wheelchair and constructed mostly from wood, this guy can be piloted via remote control and even features working lights, a moving eye (a reconstituted magic eight ball) and a voice modulator for the creepy, alien order to "exterminate." When not trying to slowly (very slowly) populate the earth with a robot army bent on universal conquest and destruction, Bosher hopes to use his project to make money for regional charities.

I know who these things working my friend's boyfriend in Rochdale making them and he have them plenty and plenty
He even producing star wars black and white soldier helmets
Its very good very nice work !
@Evoss
This is why immigration is a problem in the UK.
@(Unverified)
wow so you've never seen the show Doctor Who? Maybe the Hills is more your style?
Cool
Looks like R2
I would very much like one for my living room. Right by the front door.
Exterminate! Man It's a good time to be a Doctor Who fan, what with Tennant ending his run with quite the bang, Children of Earth a few months ago, hell even The Sarah Jane Adventures has stepped up nicely.
Exterminate! Exterminate!
That is amazing, got to love the British man in a shed
If the guy doing the pushing is the builder, I have to say he looks an awful lot like Davros. How totally appropriate.
That's Dalek Sec from the Cult of Skaro!
"I thought you were just a legend." - The Doctor
@pcwzrd13 I've become a massive fan of Doctor who recently...how can you tell that is Dalek Sek?
@pcwzrd13
he's the only black dalek in the new series.
Although I must say, the stylings on this are more reminiscent of the old series, which had multiple black daleks.
@PATRICKmcnicholl
It looks a lot like Dalek Sec. Most Daleks are gold color but Dalek Sec is black.
Oh, and working eye = good. Working laser cannon = much, much better.
exterminate! exterminate!
@FraggleRock
Is there an echo in here??
I would bow down before our new robot overlords, but they'd just exterminate me. I'll stand up straight and take my medicine like a man.
EXT-TERM-IN-ATE!
Im now going to go build a Cyberman, and you all shall be UPGRADED or DELETED.
How much do you think this guy will sell that for?
@Apeman
"I will upgrade, I will! But only with my last breath!"
"Then breathe no more."
What you've never visited

EXTERMINATE!!!EXTERMINATE!!!EXTERMINATE!!!EXTERMINATE!!! oh the memories :)
Yea, my buddy bought a set of plans from Project Dalek and made a full size one off of a motorized wheelchair frame that he can sit in and drive around. It's got an amp with a voice modulator so he can talk to people and he can play sound effects off of his cell phone. It's rather neat.
@kennison
And by rather neat you mean rather sad, right?
@Eternal Density gawk, how did a mundane get in here. You muggles are all alike!
Danger Will Robinson!
@navyasw02
Wrong Sci-Fi...
Oh dear these robots actually making my friend's boyfriend he is from Rochdale .. He making plenty of these robots and plenty sizes ,,
He making even Helmets Star wars !
Very nice ! Very good work !
Maybe I should build a $1,000 REMOTE CONTROL robot to push around as well.
EXTERMINIEREN!! EXTERMINIEREN!! EXTERMINIEREN!!
Yes I know that is not really German for "Exterminate" which is "ausrotten"
@The Doctor Since you know it's not a German word, and given that the original series is British, why did you write it?
@(Unverified) Because it was something the Daleks said in the 4th season Episode with the 10th Doctor, Titled Journey's End when Martha "Warps" to Germany. The Daleks are saying this.
ready for battle with their arch nemesis the gay daleks...
EXPERMINATE , EXPERMINATE ... !
i'm sure that was a chris morris (aka blue jam) sketch,
This isn't really news...
Lots of people in the UK have Daleks. Myself included. Even if you don't want to build one, there is a company that sells them.
Also, Daleks are just over 5 feet tall...that guy must be tiny!
Quickly, find the closest set of stairs!
@TheOtherJames
lol but they can fly, although probably not that one.
I bloody love the KLF.
Doctor Who on Engadget?
It must be Christmas! My too favourite things combined. :)
I never got the dalek thing, even when I was 2yo I would not take a robot that clunky and disabled serious, worst designed prop ever IMHO, and especially since the set in british productions is always so cramped, just making it that more stupid (if that's possible).
I guess you have to be brit to understand or something.
@Wwhat
Half of Dr Who is tongue in cheek....
@Wwhat The Daleks were introduced in 1963, at a time when the Klingons were still wearing make-up and didn't look like Worf at all. They're just being true to the original series by keeping their looks.
@(Unverified) Klingons didn't even appear until after September of 1966. Give me a break.
I think TNG ruined the klingon concept, originally they represented the fascist streak humans have externalized as alien creatures, then when the 60's ended and fascism became a great thing they changed them into 'lovable' primitive violent guys drowned into some tribal religion crap, that was just a sad and dumb thing in my eyes, both to change them and make violence and primitive behavior 'lovable', although I can see how americans could relate eh ;/
This is pretty common! I have built one too. Its also powered by an electric wheel chair, and got a voice modulator, along with a few other technical goody's.
Infact Im now a moderator of the Dalek Builders Guild, and we have quite a large community of Dalek Builders.
Why you felt the need to make out this one guy was unique is beyond me, You've even covered Project Dalek before, which is another large Dalek building forum.
@Milner08
Indeed.
Slightly more interesting is my gf and a few others built a life sized dalek out of liquorice a couple of years ago at her school as part of their textiles course...not sure why liquorice is considered to be a textile but meh, it looked cool.
The Dalek in the picture looks awesome. The Dalek in the video looks like shit. Am I missing some kind of connection between the two?
@nrb It's an old music video using the dr who and dalek theme, sometimes engadget guys link such for general amusement, the video is obviously very old (1988) and not related to the dalek design in question nor the dalek used in the actual show.
Screw that, I want a real TARDIS!
Cool but My son was riding around in one of these a year ago at Gallifrey One in Los Angeles. Had a nicer paint job as well. All coppery and stuff.
