iPhones rejoice as Ustream Live Broadcaster hits App Store, other smartphones wonder what all the ruckus is
When it comes to streaming live video from a smartphone, there's an app for that and there has been for a long, long time -- unless you're an iPhoner. With Qik for the iPhone a delayed broadcast was possible, but it took months for the thing to break out of its WiFi-only shackles. Now you, like Bill O'Reilly, can do it live courtesy of the Ustream's Live Broadcaster, newly available in the App Store. It's not the first to stream live video from Apple's handset, an app called Knocking gets that distinction after getting the nod last week, but it is the first to allow live broadcasting, it works over 3G, and it's available for free right now for iPhone 3G and 3GS models running OS 3.1 and above. So go ahead, start those cameras rolling and tell all your friends how great it is -- just don't be heartbroken if they're not all that impressed.
P.S. It's worth noting that Ustream also works in local record mode thus turning the iPhone 3G into a video camera like its newer 3GS sibling. Videos (stuck at 320 x 240 pixels) can then be easily viewed in the Broadcaster app or uploaded to Ustream, YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter.

Not that I care, since Ustream is absolutely useless and I own a platform that already has both Qik & Ustream, but it's about damn time.
yay yay. just downloaded it for my iPhone 3G. finally video recording for the not too old iPhone. i'm sure i'll play with this for all of 30 minutes before getting bored and just going back to using my 5 or 6 daily apps.
@ravissimo I'd love to be able to record video without a jailbreak, but
this does not work on my 3G.
@dand Make sure you get the Ustream Live Broadcaster. The other Ustream recorder app doesn't do video with the iPhone 3G.
One should also note that video broadcasters on other platforms are not restricted to WiFi-Only.
@Machinedog This app broadcasts over 3G as well.
my n900 can even stream from justin.tv. from its browser. i wish i had to download an app just to use the internet.
@HatTrick
Kind of a specific definition of "using the internet", isn't it? Last I heard there was a lot more to the internet than justin.tv. And just to point out an irony, that browser you're using? That IS an app. You could try getting to justin.tv without it, but that probably wouldn't work too well. So yes, you too have to use an app to use "the internet".
@HatTrick SkyFire is by far the best mobile browser in my opinion. Any flash content can be played on it, including Justin.tv, Ustream, etc.
@ALBGunner04
however, you have to go through their servers before its displayed on your mobile phone.
i still have to say the fennec build is by far the best mobile browser i have used.
@Jack
so by your definition, have an icon that emails is also an app?
the fact is, i do not have to continually download/pay for everything that i can do in a browser on the n900. if you can see it on the web, you do it on your mobile
This is the right link
http://www.ustream.tv/mobile/broadcaster
you guys linked to the UStream Viewer. Two different applications.
@jfranco Thank you, sir. Fixed it.
Whoa! You really need an app for that? Well my N900 is really happy using the ustream.tv :D
YOU WANTED THE BEST, YOU'VE GOT THE BEST....THE HOTTEST APP IN THE WORLD.....USTREAM!!!!!
So this can be approved for 3G and Slingbox can't? That's racist!
Is the chat functionality available too?
Due to the UK/NY time difference this could actually be a better way of me listening and commenting on the Engadget podcast..
Do it live, F' it! WE'LL DO IT LIVE!
@petey caps "There's now words on it!!!!" This F***ING THING SUCKS!
I just tried it and it's laggy as hell.
@brown like dookie
What's next? Bluetooth tethering?
Oh, always at the top of the tech game, Apple!
@r34p3r They are, they are!!!
Next they'll also introduce us to send/end button. It will be the most revolutionary thing to hit a touchscreen since the touchscreen itself (also introduced by Apple)
How did this get approved? There is no public API for accessing the live video from the camera.
@bjoernkah from the low FPS, its more like their taking snap shots and sending them.
@(Unverified) But there is no shutter sound which is mandatory.
Whoever wrote this article is mistaken. The Qik app on the iPhone will live-stream just fine. I can send a stream to Qik with only a 2-3 second lag time, and even text chat live with the viewers of the stream.
And here all I could think of was that I can finally watch those engadget live podcasts!
The application worked great for me, once. Now it tells me it cannot find my iphone's internet connection, despite having a full signal wifi connection.
want something funny, it works on the iphone 2g... wait what did i say that VIDEO on the 2g that apple said was impossible!?!,
The funny part is the Qik and Ustream apps that were from cydia, have awesome framerate and performance.. ustream from the appstore, has horrible performance and like 3fps on the 2g.
@brown like dookie
Yeah, you guys are right. The iPhone sucks so much that it's going to get discontinued because it's so unpopular and horrible.
Any second now. Just keep waiting for it. No really, keep waiting. Any second now.
Meh, I've had this on my Android phone for a while
@brown like dookie +1 next year they'll innovate even more with multitasking, maybe all computers at apple are set 2 years back so they think they are innovating
does it really come with a streaming live KISS show??
