Foxconn distracts all with TXM-355 bamboo desktop chassis, brews bamboo tablet rumor
Look, we've all been giving Foxconn a bit of a hard time recently with all those Apple tablet and iPhone rumors, so it's only fair for the Taiwanese giant to take some time off for something fresh. What we have here are a couple of self-proclaimed "world's first" desktop chassis with bamboo front cover (so we guess that Dell Studio Hybrid doesn't count to them), aiming to achieve environmentally-friendly status in China. While Foxconn's Bamboo Forest 1 ATX case on the right has been announced for about a month, the TXM-355 or Bamboo Forest 2 microATX case on the left is fresh from the oven -- visually already a good candidate for your next HTPC build. Despite a few rough cuts and the ugly glue work on the optical drive flap, PCPOP has given the smaller brother a thumbs up overall. Not bad for ¥368 ($54) either, and it's only an extra $2 for the big daddy. Just watch out for that panda behind you.

is it fire proof?
@princecloud35 I think the question should be is it panda proof?
I hope they haven't used running bamboo. It's invasive!
The logo stickers on the front kinda ruin it for me. Awesome idea though!
@EV0LUTION
lol, because they can't be remove??
@EV0LUTION
I was going to say the same thing! You spend all that work fussing over the wood craftsmanship (it looks like it took a lot of effort because its done quite nicely) and then you plaster it in stickers? That, to me, just made this art work tacky...advice: ditch the stickers.
@EV0LUTION
I was thinking the exact same thing. Why design something nice and classy looking, and throw a bunch of garish stickers all over the front of it?
I wonder if they leave dark squares when you remove the stickers, wood (and natural materials like it) doesn't respond well to many stickers, it's like putting a glass on a wooden table.
Wait... No windows 7 sticker??? They could fit a couple more stickers on there and then it'd look like any new asus laptop (ul80vt).
Foxconn is synonymous with iPhone now..
no one gives a crap about anything they gave to say unless it is iPhone 4g related.
@NAME Foxconn still makes enthusiast parts, so it matters for system builders and the like.
Too bad they don't make video cards anymore, the Foxconn 7900GS was legendary.
@NAME their North American headquarters are literally down the street from me. Good company, I enjoy using their motherboards and graphics cards.
I want it now.
The panda, I mean. As a pet.....
I aways wanted a desktop made from wood, but that is fugly - seriously, couldn't they have done better than just sticking a bamboo faceplate on a plain jane mid-tower?
Dell did it better with their Studio Hybrid:

@millertime We did give the Dell a shoutout in the post. ;)
@millertime
I just made a nice casemod using a half wooden faceplate.
It was a little Mini ITX case, made a new faceplate for it, with a strip of varnished hardwood running down one side. Then the rest of the PC was painted metallic British Racing Green, with little exhausts for the fan output.
Looked kind of gay apart from the faceplate, but it was for a friend who loves Jaguars because he thinks he is some sort of gentleman...
Are those press shots? All those stickers just make it look tacky.
This is kind of nice and everything but how is this environmentally friendly? It looks to be all plastic and steel on the rest of the case, just like any other computer case. Sure, I guess it's more environmentally friendly than building it out of koa...
@Eddie W
...koala bears?
Yeah, probably.
This case is ugly.
In my opinion of course.
A no buy.
Whats up with bamboo all of a sudden? cause it sounds exotic?
@One Love
Cause bamboo is the shit man.
Even Bob loved bamboo.
My screenname says it all...............
Is bamboo better at shielding us from the electromagnetic radiation?
@(Unverified)
It's on top of metal, and the case isn't there to shield you but to shield communication networks and shield itself from external EM spikes.
OMG I WANT THIS
I appreciate the effort to go green, but seriously? This thing is hideous. It looks like someone glued a couple bamboo boards to the front of a regular metal casing. A full bamboo casing would have been much nicer looking IMO.
That would have fit well in my father's wood paneled rec room in the 1970s. Not so much with any current decor though. No thank you.
""world's first" desktop chassis with bamboo front cover (so we guess that Dell Studio Hybrid doesn't count to them)"
The Dell Studio Hybrid doesn't count as a computer with a bamboo FRONT cover to anyone. It's bamboo is on the sides. It's funny when a blogger makes snide comments without reading the quote thoroughly.
@sovnarkom Exactly. No harm in poking fun of a "world's first" statement here.
I'd sooner use an emachines case than one of these. NZXT Beta FTW
Look like B&Q crashed into PC World...
Really don't understand why they have to keep those stickers
better easy to remove stickers than embedded or burned in stuff, assuming they are easy to remove, and on the closeups they look like they are.
i'm agree with the people who say this is an ugly half-assed effort at making a wooden case
a google search for 'wood case' gives you a million examples of how it should be done
also, i don't see how this is in any way environmentally friendly (anyone wanna shed some light on that?)
@mrqs Bamboo's good because its quick growth makes it a renewable material, and its physical properties makes it an ideal replacement for the slow-degrading ABS panels.
@Richard Lai
but the case still has just as much plastic and metal on it as any conventional one; it's like replacing the gear knob in a car to a bamboo one and calling it economical
@mrqs Most of the old plastic parts are gone. The metal's probably to do with the EM shielding, heat dissipation and grounding.
Ugly case :-(
But did you know you could buy "Foxconn" OLED Display Keyboards directly from them? Their minimum orders are in 1000s but they have made an exception for their OLED keyboards: Minimum order is just 1 !

@kjmathew Meh. Your link sells the keyboard for $179.99 while OCZ sells the same thing for $89.99 (went down from $135): http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/09/oczs-sabre-oled-gaming-keyboard-now-shipping-priced-at-135/
Why can't they use something other damn bamboo? Why not walnut, maple, or even pine?
@moldymac
Bamboo grows faster.
