The
iPod touch (and technically the
iPhone as well) may well be "the funnest iPod ever," but it can also be the most awkward device to hold for prolonged gaming sessions, nor have
previous attempts made things any better. The iHandstick might just do the job -- while we can't credit them for
originality, this hollow cousin of the
Playstation controller may satisfy owners of iPod touch 2G / 3G and iPhone 3G / 3GS. Remember, it should give a similar grip enjoyed by millions of Playstation gamers over the last 15 years. The only doubt left is whether our thumbs can easily reach the virtual buttons on the screen. Wanna give this a shot? $16.99 plus shipping and it's all yours.
I want to see someone talking with this attached to their face.
@dds1043
Do people who take iPod gaming this seriously have anyone to talk to?
@yulebellow
The WoW admins called. There was a serious problem with their account
Sweet! now get it to connect to the Playstation via bluetooth and get some crazy dynamic touchscreen input action going!
crapgadget.
What's the point of this when it doesn't even have any buttons on it. If anything this would get in the way.
Not that I actually own an iPhone.
Last week I was informed of an accessory device version of this which actually does have buttons on it and maps to the screen so you can use an idevice as a "proper" game device and skip the "funnest" part where you die cause you can't see the freakin enemy
@MJGAMER 1991 XBL
Why would it have buttons? The screen is a giant button? I guess you've never seen an iPhone, but it's touch screen. So when you're playing a driving game, you are holding the edges of your phone and tilting it sideways to turn. That can be awkward. Or when you're shooting zombies and holding the edges of the home, you wish you could get a better grip as you slide your thumbs up and down to hit all the buttons. This handle looks pretty interesting, especially for PS3 owns used to the controller.
@MJGAMER 1991 XBL
nice profile pic...
This is starting to get ridiculous, don't even know how these even make news anymore.
Hmmm?
They're clearly running out of ideas for (useless) iPhone accessories.
I wish Apple should have a better answer to iPhone gaming. I want physical buttons for action games.
Until the iPhone has gaming controls I'll pass on it.
Meh.
@(Unverified) I second that notion...
False Advertisement. I clicked the link thinking something else.
useless if it doesn't also provide physical buttons.
There's something eerily sparse about it. Like the groinal region of a Ken doll.
ehhhh. Only slightly worse than the Playstation controller attachments for the PSP.
Am I the only one that thinks that looks pretty nice? Of course you'll be able to reach the buttons! Unless you have the hands of a five year old. The only problem is... do I really want to bring around a controller looking phone all the time? Probably not. Maybe when the graphics and on the iphone/ipod get better this will actually be worth it.
It needs buttons. Bring along the rest of the controller, and make it functional, and I'll buy it.
as innovative as a black of wood
If you are playing an accelorometer-based game and you can still reach the screen OK for tapping then I can see the use of this but beyond that I don't think there is anything wrong with the iPhone as it is. I will also note that it is not clear from the picture how you get audio - the add-on seems to cover both the headphone socket and speaker.
it should have d-pad and buttons. if it has it then iPhone/iPodTouch = Great Gaming Machine !!
The day Apple allows a peripheral with real buttons will be the day they are going to release their next generation ipodtouch. Even tough it is absolutely possible to have this implemented on the current generations. People will be all over it still.
@runner50783
Apple -already- allows this starting in 3.0. It was one of their advertised features to allow dock-connected game-pad accessories.
@Ned Scott I don't recall expressly "game pads" the only interactive accesories I've seen so far are GPS things...
Where are the damn buttons??
"the funniest iPod ever"
or just buy a psp?
iFuckinguseless
If they put a speaker in the base of one leg, and a mic in the other, you could use it as a phone. There might even be an app for that.
I always thought the Playstation controller had the most uncomfortable handles, so that's probably not the best thing to model this product after.
Most comfortable controller handles ever? Gamecube by a country mile.
Honestly, engadget, wtf? Great crapgadget find, but like a year or two too late. This can't be your first time seeing such a hideous "game grip" accessory for the iphone.
@Ned Scott Well, do share.

plus your run-of-the-mill knock-offs found on places like dealextreme, etc.
@Ned Scott K, we never said this was the first grip we've found anyway, and we did mention the first grip you linked here. We just want to mention the iHandstick because it's one of the smallest in the market, and it's pretty fresh.
@Richard Lai
Really? I thought the point of the article was to make fun of it.. Hence my reaction ("it was funny the first time..").
@Ned Scott Nah, I'm seriously tempted to check it out when I go to Hong Kong on Sunday. I think it has potential. Same with your second link which is actually cheaper.
Did a windows blog close down or something recently? The window fanboyism on engadget is getting thicker than the crap stuff into their comments.
It's really simple. If you don't like the iPhone-
1) don't read the article
2) don't post that you don't like the iphone
3) don't post that you don't like the accessory that an iphone owner would
4) look for a windows-centric article
5) fap away with other windows fanboys commenting on said windows article
6) ?????
7) PROFIT
Seriously though, pop a fucking Tylenol.
This one of the dumbest pieces of shit I have ever seen on this site and for the iPhone.
This doesn't compare to the Helix. It can be positioned landscape and portrait, you can plug in your iPhone/iPod touch and even has a hole for the camera.
