Google employees given HTC-made Google Phones, January launch imminent?
TechCrunch was certain that rumors of a pending honest-to-goodness Google Phone were the real deal, and now according to the site, Google employees are already tweeting with the devices in hand. If you believe what you see on Twitter, Google drones were given the HTC-designed handsets at an all-hands staff event, and the phone is quite a looker. One tweet reads "ZOMG we had fireworks and we all got the new Google phone. It's beautiful." while another says the phone is "Like an iPhone on beautifying steroids." One other, non-Google user on Twitter who's seen the device says that the device is a bit thinner than the iPhone, has a trackball (a la Hero), and has no physical keyboard... which sounds like the Bravo / Passion we've seen a lot of lately (and we hear is coming to the US soon). Apparently the device is running Android 2.1, is unlocked and AT&T-ready (no word on 3G status, but this could line up with our speculation about this being the carrier's first Android phone), and will be due sometime in January. We're guessing if that last bit is true, it will coincide with a CES announcement, but anything could happen at this point. If the device is out in the wild in such a big way, an end of the year press release wouldn't shock us either; of course, it's entirely possible that this is going to end up becoming the Android Dev Phone 1's true successor or an elaborate prank on Google's part in response to the rumors that have been building steam over the past couple weeks (they're crafty and they have a sense of humor -- it could happen). Anyhow, check out one of the tweet-tears after the break, and stay tuned for more info!Update: Google all but confirms that devices are floating around on campus in a post on its blog:
Not only that, but TechCrunch has more details on the device, claiming it will be a Google controlled, HTC-built model actually dubbed the "Google Phone," and will feature a "super high resolution OLED display," a Snapdragon CPU, a mic on the back of the phone that helps to eliminate background noise, is "really, really fast," and most importantly, will be sold unlocked. Essentially, TC claims that the phone will function on any GSM network you throw at it -- we assume that means an extremely rare pairing of both T-Mobile and AT&T 3G bands in the radio. Of course right now this is all speculation and hearsay -- until we get some solid facts (and maybe a device or two on camera), don't pull out the credit card just yet.We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it.
Update 2: Jon Gruber over at Daring Fireball says that the Google Phone is identifying itself as "Nexus One" (a Blade Runner reference) in its user agent string, though apparently Sony is calling its Android UI "Nexus" as well. Furthermore, a tweet from the man claims that he's heard the phone sports 3G for T-Mobile only, thus seriously dashing hopes that this would play nice all over the US of A. Again, grain of salt everyone.

We just got some yesterday and I gotta say, this kills my iPhone. :)
@Comment
Is it on AT&T?
@Ezye1313 Unlocked apparently.
@althon64
You want an HTC phone with android? plenty on the market .
@Comment Pics or it didn't happen.
@althon64
I want TWO!
@youngluck And sometimes even then it didn't happen.
Google drones? How rude.
@Comment, first off I will most likely buy this phone when it comes out, and keep my DROID as well, but I'm not buying the iPhone comment. I had a 2G, 3G, and 3GS iPhone so I am somewhat familiar with them.
How does this phone blow it away? Because it has the 1Ghz snap dragon CPU and an OLED screen? 2.1 isn't anything revolutionary over 2.0. The next iPhone will be out in 6 months, so comparing 6 months new tech is kind of a wash.
There are many things I love about my Android phone, but there are also many things the iPhone does better.
@althon64
The hatred of Apple on this website (among the posters) is getting so annoying....
@treats
Oh, but apple never makes any drastic changes. They might update the camera, give it a slightly larger screen, but it wont be as much of an upgrade as say the latest android phone (droid) and this, which will most likely be coming out within three months.
@TheCodexAlera Your hatred of Sony is annoying on Joystiq as well, but I guess only you can complain huh Mr. Holier Than Thou Prick?
@TheCodexAlera Go to hell. : )

Yup... definitely the passion
@althon64 2010 is going to be an exciting year. Google Phone, Apple Tablet, and Google OS. If the Google Phone is sold unlocked I’ll look into switching from the iPhone. I must say the phone looks sweet and the Android OS is only going to get better. Nexus One POV: http://bit.ly/google-phone-finally-confirmed
Nice! at&t needs an Android phone NOW.
@Peter F
If AT&T lands this phone in any kind of exclusive agreement, on top of being the only carrier for iPhone, that would be huge for them. But with all the bad press about AT&T lately, it would really show how hard it must be to work with Verizon.
@friday04 . Not happening. I am just saying T-Mobile is getting this phone for sure. Google is going to push this phone to everyone if possible.
@Peter F Makes sense for AT&T to get an Android phone if the rumors of Verizon getting the iPhone in 2010 are to be believed
@Peter F
+1
Please let this come to AT&T.
must.. resist.. buying one...
@(Unverified)
Why? Just do it!
It will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.
Shit. Dammit I need a keyboard for emulators. Snapdragon would reportedly cruise through Gamecube and PSone roms.
@TareG
Somehow I'm doubting GameCube games, but PS1 for sure.
@Special Agent Steve
If the iPhone 3GS on 600Mhz can do Gamecube (or was that Dreamcast?), then Gphone's 1Ghz can probably do it even better...
@TareG
PROTIP: lern 2 megahertz myth. Also, lern 2 gamecube emulate.
i7 machines can't cruise through gamecube roms. Existing emulators have shit-tons of graphical errors. Also, how do you propose to handle d-pad + c-stick + joystick + abxy + L + R and Z on your screen?
@El Jefe
Oh well I guess I meant Dreamcast emulation, which was recently outed on the 600mhz iPhone 3GS...
@El Jefe Learn to communicate clearly. Thanks.
What about us @ tmobile...
@tgernon
Could be for both... wouldn't be the first time HTC has released the same phone across multiple carriers. I read the entire transcript of the twitters, etc. over at Phandroid and it didn't say anything about only working with AT&T phones just that was the only example they had.
Come on T-Mob! We want a real, professional Android phone now! Time to upgrade from the G1!
@BacteriaEP Seriously, the mT3g, Behold 2 and Moto Cliq are all child's play. Give us a real phone.
No "call" or "disconnect" keys? I sorta like how pressing the call key anytime would take me to the phone app....
iWant now!
I hope this is T-mobile bound. Especially with the incoming Speed boost HSPA+
Brainstorm
First, I figured Google was coming out with a phone for a carrier so I thought, Don't they have Android phones out already...
Then, I figured they must be starting they're own phone service...
Now, I don't know WTF to think...
Anyone have a clue, the AT&T statement could mean anything?
If AT&T gets this phone, then T-Mobile should be ashamed to be beaten by the competition. So far, they are still stuck on the old G1 and MT3G and the crappy CLIQ. Better get something high end soon, or Verizon and AT&T will have the best Android devices on the market, and that has to hurt.
@scoobydooby I wouldn't say T-Mo is much competition for AT&T or VZW. They're a second rate carrier sort of like Sprint.
@ushneb
How so? Because they only have 45 million users instead of 70 and 80 respectively?
As far as I can tell everything else in on par with varying degrees of effectiveness. For example, while AT&T may technically have better 3G coverage... at least my own will work in both SF and NY...
As for Verizon, well they're a CDMA network and that comes with it's own advantages.
There's no difference in terms of cell features between Verizon/AT&T and T-Mob.
God, I wish I worked at Google...
@B3astofthe3ast
I feel you man. Forget the Google phone, I want a Google job!
@B3astofthe3ast
I hear that they have slides and escalators instead of stairs, some of the offices have aquariums in the walls, and it's technicolor in most places. I don't have proof of this, though. Let's go get ourselves some jobs.
@B3astofthe3ast I heard they have a magical room where they grow sweets with a chocolate river running through it.
@HardToBelieve "slides and escalators"
you mean chutes and ladders? how awesome would that be.

Greatest place to work ever!!!!
If they could tweet.. they might as well have posted pics of the phone!
@Siddharth Should it take a photo of itself? :D
@Jakob mirror?
@twistyaction : You do realize that EVERYONE at that event was given a phone.. also they must have had their own phones!
@Jakob
Yes. I think it should. I wish it could.
