Joojoo tablet gets its first batch of press shots, $30 dock accessory
Up until now, the only official shot of the Joojoo tablet was that seductive snippet of the corner. 'Course, you got a pretty good look of the thing if you bothered to watch our sit-down with Fusion Garage's Chandra Rathakrishnan, but it's still a pleasing sight to see the company push out a nice gallery of press shots to really tickle the senses. We aren't exactly sure if these guys have Cameron's approval to use Avatar screen shots to promote their product, but at this point, we wouldn't put anything regarding the Joojoo beyond the realm of feasibility. Oh, and if you were wondering how you'd eventually use this thing as an at-home movie viewer, the $29.99 dock accessory pictured above is the answer. One word of caution, however: given all the drama surrounding this thing, use that pre-order button at your own risk.
P.S. - Our good pal Chippy is suggesting that the only possible CPU / GPU tandem that could result in the claimed 1080p support and 5 hours of battery life is the Atom Z530 and the GMA500, both from Intel. Hopefully we'll hear something official in short order.

Fail..
@Evan Seems like you can, after all...
@Evan you, sir, are an idiot.
This tablet thing seems neat, except considering how expensive it is I'd have a heart attack taking it anywhere and having my eyes off it for a second.
So all it does is hold the device up? Just a piece of plastic? $30?
@Needsahaircut
Well, that's what most GPS reciever and cell phone docks do... If it's not third party, you're getting raped. But keep in mind, it's a quality rape, so it may sometimes be worth it. ;-)
Off the top of my head, Droid car and home docks are about $30, and Nuvi mounts are also $30. For a device more then double the size $30 for an official dock looks kinda good in comparison... Sure, you can get third party docks cheaper, but they just don't have the same appeal.
@TheOneAndOnlyJH Yes, but the DROID docks also charge the device. I don't know if the NUVI docks have integrated charging, but I would find it annoying to have an extra wire dangling off to the side to charge it too.
@Needsahaircut
This doesn't look too bad compared to other companies. I mean, Apple is selling iPod SOCKS for $29
http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9720G/B?fnode=MTY1NDA4Mg&mco=MTA4MzY5Mzg
A SOCK
FOR $29
SERIOUSLY
GOTTA LOVE CAPS LOCK
I'M SO DOUCHY
@BigKing
I could get like 5 pairs of normal socks for that price. And who the hell puts their ipod in a sock?
@BigKing how the hell does that sock have a 4.5 star rating? HOW?!
"CPU / GPU tandem that could result in the claimed 1080p support and 5 hours of battery life is the Atom Z530 and the GMA500"
um... what about Ion? Would that not allow for 5hours or something?
@ChaosDefinesOrder
It's possible, considering the HP Mini 311 gets 5.5 hours of battery life. But it might depend on the size of the battery as well. And I doubt you'll get that 5 hrs running 1080p video on loop.
@ChaosDefinesOrder
Did I miss the part where this is running Windows XP?
if it was built around an ARM CPU like Tegra, SnapDragon, or Zii, it's definately possible do to 1080P, and 5 hrs should be a breeze
This looks kind of stupid. I think im gonna wait till we get more news on the MS Courier.
@guitarkrazy118 Agreed!
Gaagh, horrible low contrast background colours FAIL.
That is 90's web design right there.
Okay, I get the rotating colours thing. Kind of a nice touch, actually, but if they want it to be subtle (which I hope is their intent), they have to use subtle colours. They can't blast primary colours at the user's face and expect him to appreciate it while he squints to read the black text which is obscured within.
It's like having 30% grey on black for your whole front page.
I'm a sucker for press-shots! Now I want a Joo-Joo slightly more than I did before.
Still not enough to actually buy one mind you!
I was all set to buy one and realized its only avail by Paypal. They suck bad and if you get screwed (Arrington ownz FG) then your shit out of luck getting anything back from PayPal. They could care less about their users as I've discovered the hard way in the past.
I'm on the sidelines now for buying this. Gonna wait to hear if Apple mans up soon!
This thing will be suddenly obsolete by February or March of next year.
This reminds me of a certain re-spelling of joojoo that got me kicked out of ustream during the podcast the other day.
@Karate Tortoise
Haha exactly what I was thinking, Tortoise
@Karate Tortoise I spelled it that way as well and got kicked. But seriously, they set themselves up for that.
That'll teach josh and nilay to talk about things with easily exploitable names!

or it could be Zii based

If it was running win XP that is. There are no linux drivers for the GMA500.
@janbockaert
There are no open source drivers for it. There is a closed source one.
@nrp
there is a very crappy closed source driver for one or two linux kernels (i believe ubuntu 10.4 and mandriva 2010) that is it. GMA500 isn't even supported on intels own moblin. It seems very, very unlikely Joojoo gets a GMA500 driver for their 'unix like operating system' when Redhat, Suse and Intel don't. If the tablet runs on X86 hardware, i would say it will have an Nvidia Ion. But why would they run on X86? ARM gets you more battery for less money.
@janbockaert where can I download this ubuntu 10.4 kernel you speak of?
@janbockaert
I doubt they had the time and energy to port Flash over to ARM. The thing might as well be running Android at that point, and then it would be a YATD (yet another tablet device).
And to be honest, the JooJoo isn't going to be that different from products coming out in 2010.
I want an e-mail when someone replies to ALL of my comments... not just the one's that lead the discussion.
Too expensive and too fat.
However, if it really contains a full Windows compatible CPU and GPU maybe even one of the more powerful Atom CPUs and a nVidia ION GPU, well, then the price and size is fine.
But as long as we don't know the specs I wouldn't want to pay $500 for maybe some piece of junk with a difficult to use ARM processor, a not responsive touchscreen, short 5h battery life, a poor display and such a fat and huge casing.
@(Unverified) Like my ex. ;)
seeya kindle.. nice knowin ya.. well no really
I find your lack of specs disturbing.
@(Unverified) apple doesn't list all specs and makes bank on iphone.
@dsr1205 Sketchy Singaporean dude isn't Steve Jobs, and can't get away with that.
Meh - I'm waiting for the Christianchristian.
@(Unverified) Haha...
It's nice and all, but the name keeps me from taking it seriously, and that homescreen just isnt cutting it.
I really wish some of these guys wouldn't treat stuff like this like it's a game.
@LAY
People didn't take the Wii seriously because of it's silly name, and, well, they still don't take it seriously. But it sold reeeeeeeally well.
@LAY
Let's stop all the negative thinking.
After all this thing just MIGHT turn out to work decently , could'nt it?
I for one hope that it does.
I could use a good functional, fast and effective multimedia tablet for an affordable price and although I must admidt that probably this isn't gonna be the one, at least they are trying and they deserve some measure of respect for that.
Besides there is just that little ,tiny hope that it might actually turn out to be worth buying, maybe.
Isn't it "accessory," not "accesory"?
Is anyone else confused by the claim of 1080p support on a display with a resolution of 1366 x 768?
@ll0yd Yeah, makes NO sense... Unless they're saying that it "supports " it in a way that takes 1080p content and scales it down, but that would be pretty shiesty. Not to mention the fact that my Macbook Pro streams youtube 1080p at like 2 frames a second makes me doubt a superslim tablet (w/ less than 1080p capable resolution) could handle it...unless there really is some "joojoo" going on.
@chtown
It probably supports 1080p playback when outputting to an external video source. And you should try the new Adobe flash 10.1 beta to improve flash playback. Flash sucks on OS X.
@SolidSnake Makes sense I suppose, and thanks for the tip - I'll check out the beta.
@chtown except for the fact that there's no apparent way to connect to an external display
@ll0yd I thought of that after I read @solidsnake's reply...that and, as he played the 1080p youtube clip, he said it was 1080p - so he was obviously claiming 1080p "local" playback. Plus he looks like an alien.
This thing is a cool "alternabook" worth checking out: http://litl.com/
@ll0yd That 3rd port = display out. hhttp://www.engadget.com/2009/12/07/fusion-garage-joojoo-tablet-rises-from-the-ashes-of-the-crunchpa/
@RyanM10303 better double check that. according to the reports and the video interview, the available ports are a usb port, a headphone jack, microphone jack, the power jack, and a mystery slot that may or may not be for a 3g sim card in the future.
