HTC Legend still looking good -- as a render, anyway
We got a pretty good glimpse of HTC's rumored Legend back in that huge roadmap leak a few days back, but now we're circling back for a better shot (and a few more details) of the probable Hero successor in all its roughly-rendered glory. High-end aficionados are probably still going to want to set their sights on the Bravo (or the Google Phone, Nexus One, Passion, what have you), but this sucker won't be a slouch, either -- it looks like it's signed up for a 600MHz MSM7227 and, more importantly, a WVGA display (turns out it's only HVGA). We'd already known this from the last leak, but what's new here is the presence of HTC People II and Footprints II, suggesting that Sense is going to get some sort of refresh to commemorate the launch. Add in the alleged metal casing, and we bet this thing's gonna be a looker in the flesh; needless to say, March can't come soon enough.
Update: As friendly tipster M. Schmidler points out, since the time of writing the source has corrected the resolution to be HVGA instead of the previously thought WVGA. Frowny face.

This one has HVGA screen, now WVGA. Correct it Engadget!
This phone is HVGA not WVGA!! see http://htc-phones.net/htc-plans-to-launch-5-android-phones-legend-salsa-bravo-tide-buzz-and-3-windows-mobile-phones-tera-trophy-photon-in-q1-q2-2010.html
the screen is still nice because its AMOLED.
The reason this phone appeals is due to the MUCH LOWER PRICE it will be than the nexus one and bravo/passion.
@boggit I don't know why people bother comparing phone prices when buying them on a contract (2-3 years), what you pay for the phone is nothing compared to what you pay for the contract (1500-3000) over the course of the contract.
@Dogcowsaysmoof Also, the difference in phone prices is usually very low, especially a few months after release.
Typing on these smaller screens are easy? I got to play around with the droid and I can barely type on that, the iphone is like a perfect size for portrait typing...? is the 3.2" screen of the hero hard to type on?
@(Unverified) I think thats because the iPhone is 16:10 as opposed to the droids 16:9 (I might be wrong these WVGA etc confuse me)
@(Unverified) The Droid is a 3.7 inch screen compared to iPhone's 3.5. It may be a bit skinnier, but it should definitely be easier to type on in landscape.
I left AT&T and the iPhone 3GS for Sprint and the Hero. Typing in portrait is fine and doesn't feel much different, and typing in landscape is a breeze, especially because of the haptic feedback.
@Keni
Yeah I love how an alpha designation can stand for two resolutions with two different ARs.
The iPhone is actually 15:10.
The Droid is WVGA 854x480, true 16:9.
Newer HTC handsets are WVGA 800x480, or 15:9.
Off topic, but I'd really like to see manufacturers settle on a single 2:1 ratio based on the nK standard.
i.e.
1K - 1024x512, for anything smaller than 10"
2K - 2048x1024, for TVs to 60" and monitors up to 24"
3K - 3072x1536, for larger monitors
4K - 4096x2048, for TVs larger than 60", and projectors.
@jon
why? there's absolutely no need for a standard. it would be bad.
@boggit
"it would be bad."
Just on principle, or can you back that up?
We already have a standard, the HDTV resolutions. as the three screens converge further, it makes since to further standardize them.
else sense.
Apparently HTC's research showed that somehow people loved the chin; so they made it bigger.
lol it says htc innovation on the side
Looks alright...
I HATE THE CHINN !!!
Sorry about the caps but I am abit tired of this real ugly look.
even though i loved the looks of the original hero i think i´m gonna hold out for a bravo instead next summer. i´m hoping that one will be a beast. also curious on what apple gonna bring to the table next time.
i feel like my Sony Ericsson K660i isn´t gonna hold it any longer :D
Surprised the screen didn't get any bigger. I guess this is the more budget model, compared to Bravo and Passion. Kinda weak for a successor, but it is what it is, all eyes on Bravo/Passion still.
This is coming to Sprint to replace Hero?
@Saja Hope not. They'll remove the chin and screw-it up like they did with the Hero.
I dunno I prefer the GSM Hero's looks over the Sprint hero, and is about neck and neck with the Eris, which I have. But this new model looks better than all of that.
looks with no substance. next.
@PattyXXX iPhone what?
@PattyXXX
Huh?
HTC Leno???
@xconan: Wow, because that chin joke hasn't been recycled ten thousand times...
@xconan
hahahaha genius!
I actually really like the chin... Touch-screen phones look way too similar otherwise...
I love the styling on this one, chin and all, but I'm due to replace my dream and I want a ballsier processor (yeah, arm11 needs to die), more memory, and FWVGA (even if it was possible in a 3.2" screen). I was going to import a milestone, mostly because I also like a HW keyboard, but it's a motorola and it makes me feel uneasy.
I'll get the Passion/Bravo/whatever if it comes in T-Mo us 3g flavor, if not, it's still a good long stretch for my ADP1. I would have liked the styling of the Legend better though.
And, anybody notice yet that this one also lacks SEND/END keys? I think I know what HTC is thinking, there are already software buttons for it, but if you've used a hero you know that sometimes SEND/END lags. Dunno, I like hardware buttons and keyboards and stuff...
That looks fantastic!! I thought the Hero was excellent when I had a play with it, I liked the chin, & it was so refreshing compared with my iBone......
Just looking at my iBone sends me to sleep these days, all those (cr)applications nicely lined up on that yawnzville black background zzz, zzzZZ
@OrsonX
LOL! But seriously, the "iBone" is quite usable if you jailbreak it :-)
@OrsonX agree. Altho the "iBone" in my opinion still is the best phone out there, it feels entirely outdated. Can't wait for a strong competitor like this.
Not bad, not bad at all. But the hardware buttons are redunant, they could use the space for a larger screen.
Anyway, I'm waiting for HTC Bravo and SE Xperia X10 to see which one is going to be my next phone.
ugh, why cant THIS be the Nexus One...this phone actually looks good.
@(Unverified)
Why can't this be the Bravo?
I think the Bravo looks straight up ugly and this one looks pretty nice.. luckily (anyone having read the ai.rs entry knows) they'll remove the green color (hopefully, at least)
Specs of the Bravo are way too much better though... Gonna have to see these phones in real life to choose one...
@(Unverified)
who knows? maybe the recent nexus one is meant to look ugly. google knows the masses prefer form over functionality. hopefully the launch model will look like the one above.
HTC, make a real G1 successor... meaning KEYBOARD, gaming is no good without a keyboard.
@zsmorr
Err... gaming on the G1's keyboard was horrid... and the iPhone pulled it off w/o a keyboard, so its very well doable. Especially with the newer Android phones having multi-touch so you can have on-screen controls.
@daniel142005
I disagree, yes most people are ok with gaming on the iphone, but that doesn't mean its good. And the G1 still has the best keyboard of any android device, and gaming on it was ok. My G1 died a while ago so I haven't used android in like 2 months, but when I was using it, playing games like doom and emulators would be horrid without a keyboard.
No track ball! I got used to the track ball on the hero and like it alot!
600mhz is not a big just from the original hero!
I am curious to see what sense 2 looks like though?
@a falling stone
Hopefully us original Hero owners will get a Sense 2 update as well, just a little more stock refinement HTC and I can go back to your ROMs instead of 3rd party ones which exceed in speed.
@a falling stone It has an optical trackpad (the little black dot), you can even click it!
Very nice looking phone. Hopefully its will be responsive and fast :P
Google will dominate the mobile market, unless MS can bring something amazing with their win7 mobile. I would predict a touch plus non touch manipulation of the UI!!!
Ok back to the phone, the green plastic antenna cover is all hip and stuff but i would prefer it dark gray or black.
I like the name. Legend comes after the Hero
@Duy
Like in Halo?
nvidia/android spinoff.
Love the chin!, the green, not so much...
I kindda like the green on it =P
Oh god let it come in green let it come in green. Was about to buy a hero but i guess i should hold out as long as i can.. This whole smartphone thing better be worth it :/
