Could the
PS3 Slim have been even slimmer? It could have, according to Sony's Masayuki Chatani, but it would've cost you. That word comes from a wide-ranging interview Chatani gave to
Tech-On!, in which he revealed (seemingly for the first time) that Sony had considered using SSD drives or even network storage to further reduce the size of the console. SSD drives were ultimately rejected, as you might have guessed, due to cost reasons, and
Chatani says that network storage ultimately proved to still be simply too impractical for a game console. He also said that the PS3 could have been made slimmer if Sony had just left the power supply on the outside, but that would have "imposed restrictions on transport and use, making it harder to use freely." Not a whole lot in the way of big revelations otherwise, but you can check out the complete interview at the link below.
Typo: "Could the the PS3 Slim have been even slimmer?". Only one 'the' required =D
The PS3 is to Sony as the GameCube was to Nintendo. The system that had some die-hard fans, but nobody really wanted or understood.

@theburst: That article is a year and a half old....
@Jordan Do you even look at the numbers properly?
The PS3 has sold about the same amount as the X360 in Europe right now, even though the X360 had a one year headstart. Yea, the X360 is still leading significantly in the US, but the PS3 is not doing that bad at all. You are just a troll and a fanboy.
@pk: ooooo so the PS3 is doing the same as the competition in one territory, yeah that means a lot.
It would've been called the PS3 Slim GO. It would lose the Blu-ray drive and be 600 bucks.
If they did put more stuff into it I'd rather get the Emotion Engine back (PS2 compatibility) and an IR receiver for the universal remote before going worrying about SSDs and network storage. In fact, I still wish they'd do something like a PS3 Pro just for that...
I agree about the SSD thing, but having an option for network storage would have been cool...
Thank Goodness they did not go with network storage. Imagine if psn went down for maintenance.
If anyone did produce a console that relied on internet storage, I would give it a very wide berth.
Sure, broadband is cheap enough, and my console are connected to the net. But I can't guarantee that the router, modem, ISP network, or remote storage won't fail / be unavailable at any given time.
It's not a major problem if your multiplayer game craps out, but I would be majorly annoyed if I had just battled my way past a hard part of a game, and couldn't save my progress because the net connection had died, or I couldn't even resume my game in progress.
Let us think of another console that took the power supply out of the console and placed it on the power cord...even with the power supply brick removed it still overheats faster than my stove top. Yeah, let's try to be like THOSE guys!
I prefer having a clean console that actually works.
