@Rizzo If you're a Palm Fanboy, Palm saying "We're going to say something new sometime in the future" =IS= breaking news!
@Freakin Ijit
The fact that there are palm fanboys is breaking news.
@Chris Ziegler Damn! Though I am honored that my trollish statement was responded to by the one and only Zeigler.
I still don't see how its breaking news, oh well
@Edobe
ZING!
I hope their number one announcement is that they are ending exclusivity with the worst (by customer base) carrier.

Give me a phone with the horsepower of the HD2 and the form factor of the Touch Pro 2 (that is, a landscape physical keyboard) and I'ms old.
I hope they don't overlook one giant feature.
Speaker-independent Bluetooth-headset-initiated voice-dialing.
Please Santa!
I would be all over the Pre like
stereotypical-characteristic-on-a-something if it had this.
oh god plz let there be a new pre
I don't think Palm is bringing a new phone. They just intro'd the Pixi two months ago, and they are cash starved
Let me put this into perspective. Last quarter, Palm had just over $211 million in cash and short-term investments, on hand. By contrast, last quarter Motorola had $7.1 billion in cash and short-term investments available.
I know Palm just did another stock offering, but still...they don't even have enough cash to survive another full year of losses, let alone put development into another phone just off the heels of the Pixi. Last year, they lost $700 million for goodness sakes.
OK, I think this is relevant because I was holding out for Pre ever since I heard about it eons ago (in hardware years), having been a Palm user for ten years. Now looking to upgrade from basic cell phone in April and cataloging what is out there to the best of my limited ability. This population seems potentially more than capable of answering my basic question... I can live without a lot of the flash offered by a lot of the devices out there, but would love a phone that included support for basic text notes, sync'ed to the cloud but with local storage (for add/update, not just for read), and support for tagging. What is the best choice out there now and what is in the cards for the next six months in your collective opinions?
@skenop
Get a Pre now and enjoy it. I love mine. I'm sure if some fantastic new webOS phone appears down the line I will pony up for the upgrade eventually... phones aren't that terribly expensive compared to many things, like service.
Why can't they just stop BS'n and somebody release the HD2 with Android or something already? Geeeeeeez! None of these phones excite me anymore, I want a mini computer phone for my pocket :(
Yes I know they just came out but 3.7" screens are so 90's now.
C'mon Pre2!!! papa needs a hardware upgrade.
I'm hoping for stronger hardware but I'm so hooked on the usability and ease of use of WebOS I don't think I can use anything else now. I'm Spoiled. I tried to get into my GF's HTC hero which is sweet and I am pro Android but I still just love interacting with my Pre better.
Same size but with 5mp+ camera, SD slot, a track ball and a FRICKIN LAZER BEAM!!
unlocked GSM, give me 16GB and I'll buy in a heartbeat!!!
(my orange T680 is growing long in the tooth...)
nice! palm is gonna unleash the fury. all the tech pundits really dont think the webos is legit. lets see how the droid stacks up against the next gen webos device
Bring us good news and support me and others with Palm about a GSM unlocked version to come out soon.Maybe the PrePix. Best

I'm probably not typical of the mass-market Palm is targeting with the Pre, but if they bumped the screen from it's current HVGA to either VGA (480x640) or WVGA (480x800), and fixed the build-quality of the slider, I'd definitely put the new version on the short-list to replace my Touch Diamond. If not, I'll probably get either the Google/HTC Nexus One, Moto Milesone (aka Droid for GSM, since I live in Asia), or possibly an Acer Liquid.
The Pre's CPU is fine - it's an Cortex A8 core, as somebody pointed out - and WebOS is really nice (I have the emu and Mojo SDK). Like Android, it's build on a linux kernel, but the UI seems much slicker. But - the trend of new Android phones is towards WVGA or even higher (480x854 on the Droid), which makes web-browsing and reading in general a lot easier.
I'm worried a little that Palm isn't bringing in the cash-flow to keep pumping out new phones; they're not in "near-death" mode like last year, but they really need something to show at Vegas.
It has almost been a full year since I decided I wanted a Palm Pre. And still, I'm UNABLE TO GO IN A SHOP/ONLINE SHOP AND BUY IT!!! Preferably without a contract but at some point I wouldn't have cared if it was a locked device. I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and I think I'm neither living in a desert or on the far end of the globe, but obviously the business decision WAS VERY WRONG to go with locked devices to EU. I have 4 sim cards/ 4 numbers that I use from time to time for different countries - most of my friends do the same - none of them have an iPhone - for the same reason: no contracted phone is good for any of us. So if I'm ready to cash out 500-600EUR for a phone then why isn't PALM ready sell it to me?
If I could not buy a Pre in EU in my country for a year since it was announced they I expect VERY LITTLE of this announcement that will be FOR ME.
i think Palm is going to announce a new media player with their WebOS on it.
Lets hope keyboard less 3.5inch screen with a 5 megapixel camera that is able to record video
AT&T ummm.. hello!!! if that is what they sent out (color schemen and all) i think the ATT connection is all but implied.... They stopped just short of stamping AT&T in the lower right corner of this announcement people!

Naw, it's totally screaming Home Depot.
@(Unverified)
I wish, but Palm's color is that orange too
Bha anyways it will come to europe when hell freezes over...
Fucking palm moron !
You had tons of potential clients right here waiting for your gsm version of the Pre (but that was 9 months ago, before Droid And HD2 And N900 And Nexus One etc...)
And you're gonna land here in France in a few months with your old rusty dirty used Pre 1.0 while you'll be selling cool shinny brand new Pre 2.0 in the U.S.
Nicely done Palm you really are a great salesman ! treating your potential clients like shit will work like a charm.
I'll stick with my N900 ty.
And hopefully they'll come to France :)
There's no competitor to the iPhone here... :(
I remember in the months before the Pre was unveiled, Ed Colligan was talking about there being a three tiered strategy for Palm in the future, with essentially entry level (Centro), prosumer (Pre?) and professional/business (Treo Pro) as the tiers. WebOS devices are now in place in 2 of those three tiers...which makes me wonder if a 3rd category device (tablet/keyboardless phone) isnt a possibility. They've already demonstrated how scalable WebOS is with 2 screen sizes, It might not be such a jump to imagine a third device (touchscreen only?) as a possibility. Personally, I'd be happy with continued improvements to the Pre with minimal change to the size/shape of the phone.
One thing is for certain... given how far off EVERYONE was on what Palm would be unveiling at CES '09, If there's a surprise up their sleeve, there won't be any leaks before the big event.
Palm needs to pick up the phone, and call htc...
palm doesn't have enough cash to work on sick hardware, and improve the software at the same time, so why not give htc a peace of the pie, and have them make the hardware...
They could also get htc to help advertise it, and that way they can continue making money, without risking loosing much cash in the next year.
Here are the things that I think we're most likely to see from Palm at CES (in order of likelihood):
1) Pre II and/or Pixi II, with Verizon as the partner.
2) More details about the open development platform (i.e., an announcement of when they'll be allowing developers to fast-track their apps so they can submit an app and get back a URL immediately to use for distribution).
3) Demonstration of WebOS using the GPU. (This has been shown to be working by the WebOS-Internals.org team already, so this is fairly likely.)
4) Announcement of Flash support on the Pre.
5) Video recording support via an update on the Pre.
