Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 catches FCC on a good day
Oh, to live the life of an FCC certification lab employee: setting up test benches, writing reports, playing with devices that won't be released for months or years. Instead, we're stuck enjoying their fun vicariously at an arm's length through a little portal we know as the FCC Office of Engineering and Technology, where gems like the X10 occasionally pop up complete with pretty in-the-wild pictures, teardowns, and user manuals. What we're looking at here are test results for EDGE 850 / 1900 plus WCDMA Band IV (that'd be T-Mobile's and WIND's spectrum, by the bye), WiFi, and Bluetooth, so even if T-Mobile ultimately chooses not to offer it on contract, you should be able to score it one way or another N900-style. The user's manual is basically just 40 pages of good stuff plus a bunch of conformity statement mumbo jumbo, but it's still a good read -- so if you think this might be your phone of choice come 2010, have a look.

Those buttons remind me of the shortcut strip on my Eee PC. Not in a good way. Looks pretty cheap.
@DestrictoEnse It has a good build quality. I have seen one IRL.
@DestrictoEnse
Wow another piece of fail from SE..
Sheet, KIRF's from DealExtreme look better that this. And how much did they spend in External Design?
DX = $5
SE = $1,000,000
@DestrictoEnse
Well, I have an Iphone (on a stupid long contract so not able to upgrade anytime soon) but to me this phone is the only one I've seen that I would say looks better than my Iphone, and certainly better than all the other Android phones I've seen. SonyEricsson's component reliability has been slated in the past however, so it will be interesting to see how good this phone really is after it comes out.
"Instead, we're stuck enjoying their fun vicariously at an arm's length through a little portal we know as the FCC Office of Engineering and Technology"
You mean like we are when you guys get the newest, hottest, unreleased gadgets to review/play with? :P
How come confidentiality is never honored by the FCC?
@Jeff
Because the FCC is a public entity.
@Jeff SE only requested confidentiality for their schematic diagrams... Confidentiality of photos, test reports and the manual weren't requested.
@James Sonne
Yes, but isn't it true that they do honor it for others?
@trek
Oh I see.
I really do like the design of the X10. It's just...awesome looking.
When is AT&T going to get some of these new phones that are coming out? They need to put more emphasis on this or they are going to start losing customers.
@Sniperbait Most average consumers on att are more than happy to have the iphone. though for geeks like us, that wont be pleasing.
@Sniperbait
Tpower is right.
All ATT cares about is the iphone, and it doesn't look to be changing anytime soon.
The only thing ATT users can hope for at this point is that they lose iphone exclusivity, or we will all be left to either use some POS flip phone or an iphone.
@Sniperbait
See the dangerous thing is that, if the iPhone ever becomes a non-exclusive, they are screwed. Although, it seems like their hands are tied behind their back and they can't pick up other phones to combat the iPhone sales...ahh...good ole two edged sword.
I so want this phone. But I thought it supported AT&T 3G?
Wind FTW!
Wai! Zoe!
I hate AT&T.
@TheGM Agreed, ATT is completely HORRIBLE a carrier.
Xperia X10, Nexus One, HD2. Phenomenal data Speeds. 2010 is going to be a FANTASTIC year for T-Mobile USA.
Good for them they deserve it!
@SParklingCYaNide words can't describe how happy to be on tmobile.
all this talk about the x10 being on att and the droid being verizon only was really not helping me feel good about tmo. especially because their top of the line android phone is the mytouch.
@SParklingCYaNide
You forgot the N900.
WTF!!!!!! I thought this was going to AT&T, all of the previous talk was AT&T and now T-Mobile!? COME ON! Freaken iPhone is screwing us all. NEXUS ONE, X10, N900. Great we get a two sided bar of soap that runs android, wow can't wait for that! AHHHHHHH. Screw you AT&T. Grow some balls and bring on the ANDROID already.
This is just the international version of the X10. Meh, wake me up when the X10a passes throught the FCC.
> 850 / 1900 plus WCDMA Band IV (that'd be T-Mobile's and WIND's spectrum, by the bye)
Huh? Those are AT&T's 3G bands. T-Mobile uses 1700/2100 in the U.S. (which, I assume is the relevant market since we're talking FCC here).
@hellfroze Oops, nevermind, I misread the sentence.
Err, reading the article says this is T-Mobile or something but the frequencies listed are AT&T 3G, 850 and 1900. T-Mobile have 2100 and 1700 and those aren't listed. From the report - 850/900/1800/1900MHz UMTS these are AT&T frequencies.
@(Unverified) No. Check the SAR report. EDGE 850 / 1900 and just WCDMA Band IV, not II / V.
Ok, wait a minute guys. Check this out, this is a Sony announcement sheet with all of the frequencies this phone supports. According to this it supports all of them. AT&T and T-Mobile 3G. Does that mean It can be purchased out of contract probably for a gazillion dollars for AT&T and T-mobile will get the US subsidized one, like the Xperia X1?

The X10 whitepaper lists two version:
1st Variant: UMTS HSPA 900, 1700, 2100
2nd Variant: UMTS HSPA 850, (900?), 1900, 2100
It looks like this version is the 1st Variant
Check out the X10 white paper: http://developer.sonyericsson.com/getDocument.do?docId=102192
I thought Tmo's AWS was 1700mhz.
Then again SE has always been good about supporting both AT&T (locked) and Tmo (unlocked).
@recharged95: Band IV WCDMA is 1700/2100 MHz 3G...AT&T's bands aren't listed for WCDMA...at least not in this variation.
tmobiles bands are 1700/2100. The FCC doc states 580/900/1800/1900 which I think are ATT but I know they are not Tmobile
cant edit meant 850/900/1800/1900
@bobshaw
In the white paper linked above it shows that variant 1 will be great for TMO.
UMTS HSPA 900, 1700, 2100
GSM GPRS/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900

@Chris Ziegler - any chance that engadget is working on a way to filter out devices based on the bands that they support? It would be interesting if this device comes to AT&T, which looks like it is happening. Problem is that AT&T had the iPhone as an exclusive for over two years - made a bunch of money and never made improvements to their network.
Maybe due to the angle of the picture but that reminds me a lot of the X Series walkman - without the faux granite finish of course!
These 1700mhz phones cost upwards of a grand to buy unlocked ... i'll pass ..
the thing that turn me off on X10 is capacitive screen!
i used Acer Liquid with capacitive screen, it' pain in the ass to use!
wont work on nail! and hard to text using 1 hand! on my resistive screen, i just press the nail to the on-screen keyboard! on capacitive, i have to press the whole thumb to the screen, and u always press the wrong letter!
Oh my god its black. So refreshing! I wonder if touching these overly thin buttons is safe...
