LG announces "world's thinnest" 42-inch LCD panel
We're gearing up for CES 2010, which means the race to show off an even thinner "worlds thinnest" LCD TV panel is heating up -- and it looks like LG's taking an early lead by announcing a new 42-inch 1080p panel that's just 2.6mm (.1 inch) thin. The prototype LED-backlit 120Hz display weighs just under 8.8 pounds , but we don't have any other specs on it just yet -- but we're sure we'll find out far more 17 days from now in Vegas. Press release below.
LG Display Unveils World's Thinnest LCD TV Panel Measuring 2.6mm
Breaking the 3mm barrier in large LCD TV panels
Seoul, Korea (December 21, 2009) – LG Display Co., Ltd. [NYSE:LPL, KRX:034220], a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, announced today that it has developed the world's thinnest LCD TV panel measuring 2.6mm.
The development of extremely slim LCD panel was possible by applying the company's accumulated "slimming" technologies including the use of an ultra-slim, edge-lit LED backlight system and proprietary optical film technology.
The 42-inch panel weighs less than 4 kilograms - making it ideal for wall mounted TVs. Moreover, the new product offers 120Hz refresh rate technology with full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution for clear and sharp image.
In May, LG Display broke the record by unveiling 42- and 47 inch LCD TV panels measuring 5.9mm - the world's thinnest panels at the time. By nearly halving its record in just seven months, the company maintains its position as the technology leader in ultra-slim LCD panels.
Dr. In Jae Chung, LG Display's CTO and Executive Vice President noted, "With the development of the world's thinnest LED LCD TV panel that is only 2.6mm thick, LG Display has once again demonstrated its technical prowess to satisfy customer demand for high resolution and slim design products. We will continue to spur R&D activities in order to provide our customers and the market with the differentiated products that they desire."
LG Display will showcase the product and its newest cutting-edge display technologies in a private room at the Bellagio Hotel during the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2010 in Las Vegas.

Which part of her is 42 inches? I just don't see it...
@Nienhan wonder if the tv gets too thin it'll snap in half
@Bryce
That's their whole point. Then you'll have to buy a new one.
@000000
Just like I'm almost certain Apple makes their headphones with the rubbery finish which tangles them beyond belief that I get tempted to yank them till they snap causing me to buy a new pair.
But at the same time why don't they put the rubbery finish on their phones? Because then they won't slip out of your hands and fall to the ground causing you to buy a new one.
You see where I'm getting at?
First post shoulda been what we were all thinking... her, painting an image of her last "client"...
@Nienhan
Well, a stretch of imagination ..might do you some good
@Nienhan
Look in her pants.
She's actually got a little meat on her. Or maybe the TV is just that thin it makes waifs look normal? Either way, I like it.
Just come out with a paper TV already and get it over with.
@nachotech
LG announces LCD screen in a can. Spray-on HD baby.....
NEWSFLASH!
LG announces "world's thinnest" 42-inch LCD panel, also announces "world's thinnest" model.
@r3loaded joke fail.....
When is thin, too thin? I hope it's flexible...
@dand When you start seeing electronics puking nuts and bolts to stay thin then you will now we have hit the limit.
@dand
that's what she said
Isn't that the same chick from Samsung?
@gmcboot No, her sister
@gmcboot What are you trying to say? That all Asians look the same?
Yes, I did just play the race card on a tech website! BOOYAH MERRY EARLY XMAS
@gmcboot
*slow applause
OMG, she's Asian...! And LG is... from Korea... Wow.. Worlds Colliding!
@gmcboot
They all look the same.
There is a trend of electronics getting thinner but people getting wider.
Is there a correlation between each other?
What is this fascination with TV makers about a spec that no one gives a crap about??
Have you guys already developed the perfect TV so that the thickness of the case is the only thing left to "improve" upon?
@Hazdaz Maybe they are waiting to get the perfect form factor and build up from there.
@Hazdaz Thin is somewhat important, but weight is the big concern for wall mounting panels. You used to have this huge heavy wall mount kit for LCDs because they weighted 100lbs. Then LED LCDs came out and they're 60lbs. Now we're down to ultra-thin LED LCDs, and they're 8lbs - ideal for wall mounting. No heavy, difficult wall mount installations. Find two studs, drill in two screws, hang it up, done.
@Hazdaz totally agree! As long it doesn't weigh a lot and is less than 3" thick who gives a crap?! Spend their resources on picture quality and price. Maybe they needed something "new" to show at CES.
And since you *have* to have TiVo, the cableco's crappy box or something similar, how come no one's making those thinner?
Though there was one recently that attached to the back of the panel, like a wafer. That's the right way to think...
I'd love to see an image of the back of the TV.
Some of these really thin displays still have a block of electronics sticking out the back. Thinnest panel, but maybe not thinnest TV.
@alberth
Technically, this particular model is a display, not a TV, and my guess is that it's probably Displaylink-only to avoid just that feature you described.
At that point, they need to disconnect the "Brick" Where all of the cables plug in, and have it not connected to the back of the TV. then you dont have to punch a hole in the wall to have it flat.
Hey while you are at it....make the communication between the "Brick" and the TV wireless, and even make the power wireless...
there is some innovation for you... welcome to 2015
Thin is cool, believe me but really? Do we look at our TVs from the side? Does anyone really care if its a little bit thinner? I think companies should focus on making the picture better, and not how thin it is. I mean you don't want a fat TV, but thinness shouldn't be their first priority.
I'll show her the "world's thinnest"!
@brown like dookie
You sir win my "Snorted Cornflakes Outta My Nose" award for today.
Excellent!
Let's see that survive the shipping process...
Wow. That it's only 9 pounds means that it'll be extremely easy to mount on most wall surfaces with little effort, and no worries of pullout during an earthquake.
And it only takes one person to lift it up into place and hook it onto the wall brackets. I want a whole wall of this stuff.
@gerrrg "and no worries of pullout during an earthquake."
What's that got to do with a TV set?
@Greg
Any 42" flat tv needs large frames that cost a lot of money, because they need to withstand the force of a 50# TV with acceleration from an earthquake, as much as 25 mph. Imagine a 50# dumb bell being thrown at you at 25 mph...
Are you going to be able to keep standing?
Now imagine if that object was 9#.
With a 9# TV, you don't need to worry about attaching to multiple studs in the wall with 4+ screws. Now you can literally mount it to any wall or ceiling without it pulling out of the wall.
If you've ever lived through an earthquake, this matters a big deal.
TV = .1 inch thin
Cables = 3 inches thick
How is the TV technology going beyond the cables that make them work lol?
I like teh sex
WoW I wonder what they'll come up with next...
oooooh it's so thin.
Yeah but what's the fucking picture like? Is it like the majority of edge-lit LED panels with poor uniformity and terrible viewing angles?
This new focus on who can make the thinnest screen is self-defeating unless you want something that just looks good when it's switched off or don't care about what it looks like when switched on.
How about finally fixing the black levels on CCFLs LCDs and the halo effects on LED backlit models before rushing off to work on another design that still has the same shortcomings?
i could use a computer screen this size and not a tv.
what is thiner than thin?
@DeviantmacG dropping an "n" in "thinner"
They must be using a wireless distribution system for connectors (other than poer obviously) as the tv is to thin to connect any standard connectors or hdmi cables to. This tv tv will definitly be pricy but I definitly can not wait for it to come out.
awesome!
so happy i've waited to get a flat screen TV :)
first LG release a thin bevel and now THIS!!
2010 i buy a new TV, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
@liquidmonkey *Wii!
I hope it doesn't break into two or more pieces easily. haha
Looks pretty cool and thin. Would be an awesome wall mount.
Now, to wait for the official announcements, price and specs. xD
its not a tv anymore... its wallpaper!
Yep, I agree w Hazdaz. I could care less if they make it -0.5 inch thick! Improve the image quality and lower the price then we'll talk.
Ok, I understand that thinness and lightness can be a consideration to some. But it's not that big a deal and the current LCDs with LED backlighting are already pretty light, right?
Damn, thats thin.
