Nokia N900 and the case of the best unboxing ever
We'll just come out and say it: this is so awesome. In fact, if you want to just take our word for it, skip the copy and head straight to the video after the break -- you really only need to watch the first four or so minutes... Still here? Alright then. The shiny cube comes straight from Espoo and houses a N900, but the only way to get into the box is to plug it into a computer, establish a link, and then type in the right terminal command to unlock the lid (spoiler: it's company motto "connecting people" -- how clever) in addition to -- poof -- smoke! (Our favorite part.) Given the technical prerequisites, our guess is this has something to do with Nokia's the hack-centric "Push" program, but really that's just a guess. Like we said, video after the break, and if you opt to watch past the first couple minutes, you'll get to see a plastic fox. Trust us.
[Thanks, Matija]

That is awesome
I am Sure Nokia will continue supporting Maemo 5 by strengthening it, framework and enriching with many new
features/UI improvemets which would then be the benchmark of
future Maemo OS's, once this has been achieved launching newer
Maemo based devices would surely endure a much wider audience
transcending from smart-phones such as iPhone's,

Android or WinMo 6.5 - being a regular at Maemo forum,
I can see they are very quick in acknowledging to Bugs
and Suggestion being posted everyday.
It should probably take a bit more "hacking" to open. It's always nice to see that gadget reviewers actually have basic computer skills.
What if I don't have a mini USB cable?
@elibi
You would use the one they included to tether the N900 that's still in the box to your computer so you can connect to the interwebz and look up places to buy a mini-usb cable so you can open the box so you can take out the N900 so you can tether it to your computer so you can....
@elibi, then you get no candy... or cookie in this case...
Sorry...but old news. This was on Giz BRAZIL (yes, Brazil, wich you guys like so much to ignore) a few days a go...altought you guys have a better video ;D
this .....is ......needless ...my goodness
They just lost a sale. I'd only buy it now if it came in that box
Next time dont tease us regular customers.
That's nothing - you should see the unboxing of the Samsung I900 Omina - if Nokia could make their box do this I'd be REALLY impressed:

@Howzer OMG. That was hilarious. Pure awesomeness.
NOT part of the retail packaging:
- pouch
- memory card / USB/SD adapter
- fox
- cake
- 'old-school' charger
@zyborg
If the cake isn't part of the retail packaging, then I don't want the phone!
Button on stereo headphones does NOT double as volume control. It's only used to answer/end incoming phone calls.
Again, the Bluetooth headphones are NOT part of retail package (obviously...) ;)
Why is the item for review always tossed aside immediately in these videos? I couldn't care a carrier pidgeon's testicle what the damn user's manual looks like in a cursory flip-through. What purpose does it serve!?!
@INsano To be fair, they do an extensive hardware review after the unboxing is done.
The new nokia n900 is out next month and it is selling for £499, anyone know where i can buy it cheaper. (ive tried ebay).

I smell an SNL remake....
@c w j
Too bad it took my two weeks to come up with this - nevertheless,
(drumroll)
(clears throat)
"Finally, a box I can put *my* d!*# in."
(fanfare!)
Okay, I want this just so I can have the box. Best. Unboxing. Ever.
Gotta love this extraordinarily refreshing color called black ack.
Well Maemo looks interesting so far, pity the phone is a chunky piece of crap. 3 row keyboard, RESISTIVE touchscreen and it's significantly thicker than other phones with keyboards.
This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my life.
Wow...and I am actually quite a Nokia basher...wow...just wow....
S-Poo actually did something cool for once! And go N900 as well -- great f'n handset if I do say so myself.
I think Optimus Prime just shat himself, the all spark has nothing on this box
It makes more sense to me that the pouch is for the BT headphones rather then a cable bag.
Awesome. Pure awesome.
I actually have that exact plastic fox shown at 5:28!
Also, I love the initiative by Nokia, kudos.
Nice.
But where's my tiny marching band?!
I've had the N900 for about 2 weeks now, and I LOVE it.
There is a lack of apps for sure, but its true open-source nature leads me to believe it won't be long till we start seeing improvements.
As far as resistive to capacitive, this is the BEST resistive screen I have ever used. You can hardly tell the difference, trust me.
too bad the phone is crap. always sad when the box is better than the toy.
