Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 hits the FCC again, this time with AT&T's 3G bands
Yes, you might recall a version of Sony Ericsson's mighty X10 getting FCC approval last week -- but this one isn't quite the same. This time around, we've got WCDMA 850 / 1900 accompanying the quadband EDGE, which is heartwarming news for anyone on AT&T, Rogers, Bell, or Telus, though the complete lack of branding on the FCC's test unit leaves us to speculate wildly over which of those carriers (if any) will brand the unit -- and more importantly, whether any will be on shelves before frickin' 2011. In the meantime, we're guessing SonyStyle sales are a lock -- so get your save on.

Dear SE...please get rid of the fast port
@southern78
I think this has a micro USB connector right?
If this has fastport, there's no way I'm even considering it.
FastPort is an abomination created by a monkey wearing a labcoat pretending to be an engineer.
@southern78
this doesn't have fastport, it's the small USB thing
@southern78
it has a micro USB, what are you on about?
@Peytral
awww '..small USB thing', that's cute..
@Peytral Its ZOE!
@(Unverified) No fast port FTW yay!
@southern78
Just look at the FCC filing page 4 of 21 under Device INfo and look what the market name is x10a which means AT&T... that's on all of ATT's sony's... https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=1216966&native_or_pdf=pdf
so we know it's coming, but from what they've been saying it's going to have 1.6 Android, which is OLD already... Why not release it with 2.1? And even if they do release it with this, with AT&T talking about charging users if they go over the 5GB cap of your UNLIMITED DATA plan??????? then i'm not upgrading ANYTHING with them....
@elijahblake
The a at the end of a sony ericsson model number (i.e. w580a) designates that it is designed for the north american market and not necessarily for att.
YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is that a pile of sex laying next to that ruler?
@7egend
You bet it is!! Can't wait for this phone to come out. The only thing though, why are they saying before 2011?? I thought that Q1 2010 was already stated for the release...
@Plazmic Flame
Q1 2010 is in fact BEFORE 2011, you know.
@Plazmic Flame
Probably because the X1 had way too many delays so they're just hesitant to trust the stated release date
@7egend - LOL nice. I am torn. Nexus One? Experia X10? HTC Dragon? A partridge in a pair of trees? WTF? Its going to be SICK trying to decide. I am hoping I can have both in my hands to test them thoroughly.
So does the FCC do certification for Canada too? Cuz there's only one carrier that you listed (ATT) that is actual 'merican...
@altarity
No, of course it doesn't, you twit. It's a US government commission that certifies devices do not interfere with wireless electromagnetic transmission laws.
@James Sonne
My point was: If this isn't headed to the US, than why certify with the FCC? i.e. It's a lock for ATT. (A little thing called deductive reasoning, that I've recently picked up)
@altarity not necessarily, there are a bunch of handsets that go through the FCC (with and without ATT/TMO bands) that never actually show up in America on carrier (ie. W995, X1, N900, etc.)
@emuneee
Thanks for the informative answer, and not calling me a twit.
@altarity
There is a similar certification scheme in Canada called Industry Canada (IC), normally when FCC is complete so is IC, however industry canada is not as open with their listings to be able to get the same info as we do from the FCC
now ALL UMTS carriers in US/Canada are covered
hopefully both X10 and X10a will be available in states. (make sure to put "will work with T-Mobile and Wind 3G" label on X10)
Oi Chris Ziegler,
Why use a ruler when you really don't want to show us the length of this device? Or may be just work on your photography skills....BECAUSE I CAN'T SEE THE FECKIN UNITS on the ruler...
@Hitman This is the FCC test lab's shot, not mine. I WISH I had an X10!
@Hitman
The FCC took that picture.
@Hitman
I can see the units just fine. Looks to be about 12cm. And Chris Ziegler, do you think this has a pretty decent chance of making it to AT&T?
@Chris Ziegler (intended to him, if you're not him)
I owe you an apology. I woke up and read the article. Still groggy, I lashed out because I couldn't see the dimensions despite the ruler next to it.
@Mr Oos ...and that's on a good day.
@james321
What exactly are you saying? The SE X10 is by far the best looking Android device in both hardware and software.
i'll take the white virgin.
@va jj version.
I didn't realize you could still find one of those...
Now at&t kids can stop crying about not having a decent Android device. Even if at&t doesn't subsidize this, you could still get it unlocked w/ at&t 3G. I might get it..
meh... he is a Chinese robot using Google Translate for you to click on his stupid link.
Dear Sony Ericsson, please add touch sensitive buttons on the bottom instead of those god ugly plastic ones, and put vanilla Android 2.1 on it. Good day.
@TechCrunch
why would you want touch buttons over physical ones? How do they look bad!???
Is it me or does the article list the exact same bands found in the last article? whats the deal? is there a typo?
Dec 18th 2009: "What we're looking at here are test results for EDGE 850 / 1900 plus WCDMA Band IV (that'd be T-Mobile's and WIND's spectrum, by the bye)"
@treewin82
Those are the GPRS/GSM/Edge bands. Those will work across all carriers. The difference now is that the 3g bands are also listed as at&t's, where as last time they were only listed as tmo's.
@Yaoooo84
Yeah, it really saddens me that tmobile is getting all these bad ass devices while at&t customers are getting shafted. I'd actually prefer the HD2 over this. Call me crazy, but for a 4.3" media phone, I'd actually prefer WinMo, if only because it has Opera and Core Player. I haven't had much success with video players in android.
@jroff
just re-read the article. makes sense. thanks.
X10, HD2 or NexusOne... cant wait!
thank god, at least I have the choice to stay on my ATT plan with the X10...I am also considering the HD2 which supposedly is coming out on TMO
@Yaoooo84 sign with more than one carrier. problems solved!
I'm not going to hold my breath on the possibility AT&T subs this (because I know they're not). But this phone is nice, and getting it unlocked and working on AT&T's 3g network would suit me just fine.
(a guy can dream)
the xperia x1 had way better design and buttons
all this xperia has going for it is the fast processor and android. Everything else is worse compared to the old version.
Those buttons are Terrrriblee, and they are at the VERY bottom of the screen so you have Nothing to hold onto when holding the phone except for the buttons.
@(Unverified)
Are you missing opposable thumbs?
You should be able to hold the phone with your fingers and the bottom of your palm, then bend your thumb down to touch the buttons on the buttons.
Hardware-wise, this phone is on par with the Nexus One (physical design is subjective - I like both designs, but the X10 looks slightly better to my eye; however, "Sony Style" would not warrant a price premium for me. Price would ultimately be the deciding factor for me). I believe the X10 also has an OLED display, like the Nexus One is rumored to. The only sticking point is its version of Android, which is expected to be updated soon after the initial release. I'm sure people will get a Vanilla Android 2.1 running on it within days of being released, resolving this shortcoming.
All-in-all, this will be a great phone IFF they release it on time (unlike the X1) and don't price it over the market rate. Consumers will pay a little bit of a price premium; however i do not see this phone being a success if sold for over $299. It must be priced on par with the iPhone, unsubsidized or not. The market for unlocked phones in the US is a small niche and not enough to keep SE afloat and make an actual profit. Just as Sony did with the PS3, they need to forward price this phone to get mass market acceptance.
after a few years without s/e phones, i will be back for the x10
Do I dare say...... iPhone killer?
if this DOES happen to hit AT&T, does anyone else think they will exchange all the pre-installed Google apps for their own and yahoo ones?!
they're apparently doing that for their first Android phone with Motoblur, Google search is "Yahoo Search", the only google app on there is Google Maps.
I'll be selling my 3GS for this phone.
I was going to wait for HTC's Android phone for AT&T but I don't know, this shit looks pretty good now that I go back and look at it.
I have had the opportunity to play around with this for a couple of days and i have to say, this is the nicest hardware running android today. And all the SonyEricsson specific applications kicks ass. It all runs so smooth and fast.. I am definitely buying one of theese when hitting the market.. I will actually sell my iPhone to buy this phone....
SE, plllllllllllllllease sell this mobile with android 2.0 or better, your sales will improve 100000%
