Dell pulls ads from Jersey Shore, calls show 'derogatony' (video)

Its seems that casual TV viewers and large corporations handle Schadenfreude very differently. While MTV's Jersey Shore has been a constant source of amusement for at least one Engadget editor, TMZ (our other favorite tech site) reports that Dell has joined a growing list of advertisers that are backing away from the reality series. In fact, a company spokesman (with a less jaded view of humanity than us) has gone on record stating that Dell doesn't "condone or support ethnic bashing in any form." And neither do we, of course -- but we do love a good laugh. Jenni "Jwoww" Farley is unavailable for comment.
@SirNoDroin Not really... If they feel that the audience watching isn't their target audience it's a waste of time. Also, they will get press about this I'm sure which is a good thing as well.
@SirNoDroin touché the press about dropping the avertisting might be a good thing for them, but the thing is EVERYONE is dropping sponsership of the show, so its pretty much getting covered by the rest of the news.
I think dell should have kept it, with there "targeted to high-school/college kid cool school laptop" adverts. That target audience is surely watching, and shows with cult followings are usually the easiest type of consumer to sway i would think. And among this group, if Dell was the "cool company" I'm sure they would be swayed to buy one (similar to how people buy Apple products for the coolness factor)
You make a good argument, but I still stand by my point, dropping sponsorship was a bad idea.
Any company that supports ANY MTV show should be boycotted for the rest of one's life IMO.

How exactly is this show dumbing anyone down? It's pretty clear to any viewer, myself included, that the behaviors aren't healthy for functioning adults (e.g.: in the 20's, the concept of working is foreign or being excessively attached to one's parents) nor is the excessive tanning. If anything, it reinforces that idea of what is and is not conducive to positive development.

The show is terrible stop talking about this trash and they will stop putting it on TV. It isn't even interesting anymore it is just the same shit rehashed over and over again.

One trip to the Jersey Shore will confirm everything you see on this show. It's ok for MTV to show "documentaries/reality shows" on pregnant teens, mentally challenged teens, nerds who want to be "made" or endless seasons of the Real World, which show people of all ethnicity being drunks and doing stupid things, but if they narrow it down to Jersey it becomes a huge deal because some Italian people don't like it.
These people exist. No one is saying all Italians are like that. Get over it.

None of the people on this show are from the Jersey shore - most of them are form NY, Staten Island, Long Island
@monkeyontherun4 but all the advertising from Dell and Dominos, for example, if being pulled from Jersey Shore and not any other MTV show. That's what I'm getting at.
@bwl Just because many of the stars of the show live out of Jersey doesn't mean this isn't what happens in Jersey. If you go to Karma (club there), if you hang out on the Jersey Shore, there are plenty of these types of people. Whether they live in Jersey or not, they do hang out in Jersey, the show shows the cast talk about the Shore as a summer hang out, they have other friends there...it's not like MTV found stereotypical people in other boroughs and stuck them into Jersey to create their stereotype fantasy. These kids go there all the time anyway.

the Jersey Shore sort of serves as a resort area for the NYC, LI. It's where Atlantic City is.
you know how you have that place that seems really cool to go to when you're in high school or college that seems really corny once you get a responsibility or two? that's kind of what it is...in this case anyway.
you generally hear people talking about going to "the shore" through the summer.
If you've seen "The Wrestler", the beach they visit is at the Jersey shore.
When I see pictures like this and fine out that there are people in New Jersey that actually look like this it ruins my day. In fact. Christmas is cancelled. I hate that people that douchey are alive somewhere looking this stupid and they have no idea that they look like complete morons. That guy's hair makes me weep. I don't even know what this article was about... man...

The first time I saw the show I thought it was a spoof on Reality TV and the kids I went to High School with... then I realized it was on MTV and not Comedy Central and I proceeded to weep for humanity in general and the states adjacent to New Jersey in particular.

Hell, All MTV shows are just BS.. None of these shows are 'reality shows' as the people in the show don't "act" real, they are just trying to get as much attention out of it as they can... The biggest problem is that a lot of teenagers really think it is real... but then again MTV sux beyond all believe anyway these days..

this show is so bad, mtv puts up this trash in a summer house in seaside, and films it. there not even from our state,its bad enough we have to deal with the coming down every summer and trashing our beaches, but now people think that the ny bennies are from jersey that messed up. Pretty sure what did it was the situation yelling @ the Dell computer telling him to get a new haircut when he was trying to drink his jagerbombs. "NOT NOW, CHIEF. I"M IN THE ZONE!"
In case there are those here who haven't figured it out yet, these children putting in and playing up (goaded by producers) the same way the casts of every other of these manufactured situation shows do.
