We know you're itching to get your hands on a
Nexus One -- Google's managed to build buzz here the way only a couple companies in the world know how. Unfortunately, it sounds like you're going to need to cross your fingers (or pull out that eBay emergency stash) to get one out of the gate, because we've got some intel here suggesting that it'll be available only by "invitation" at first. Our tipster doesn't have information on how those invites are going to be determined, other than the fact that it's Google doing the inviting -- if we had to guess, current registered developers are a strong possibility -- but the good news, we suppose, is that T-Mobile will apparently sell the phone directly at some to-be-determined point in the future. Oh, but that's not all -- we've got specs, too. Lots of them. Here are the highlights, but follow the break for the whole shebang:
- Android 2.1
- 11.5mm thick
- 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 4GB microSD in-box expandable to 32GB
- 5 megapixel camera with mechanical AF and LED flash
- HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100, 7.2Mbps down and 2Mbps up -- in other words, yes to T-Mobile 3G and no to AT&T 3G, though you'll still be fine on EDGE
- 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display
@dand
If Verizon already had the Droid, T-Mobile has the Nexus One, then you can count on At&t getting the Bravo.
Is it just me, or is Engadget ignoring Gizmodo's very positive Nexus One hands-on preview?
@TareG
Yup, reading about how it actually performs is far more interesting than looking at the specs. This thing sounds ridiculously awesome.
I don't mean to pick on you specifically, but I have to say I don't understand this line thinking, and I see it a lot in real life, too. Leaving AT&T (or any another carrier) and breaking the contract doesn't mean you go to jail or anything. At most, it's what, $175*? And since they prorate the ETF, it could be significantly less.
If I hated AT&T, seems like $100 to leave (or whatever) would hardly hold me back. Hell, I could even sell the phone, perhaps, to offset that. And who knows, maybe I'll end up with a cheaper plan on another carrier (probably not the case with VZW, but maybe Tmob or Sprint), so in the long run, I save money.
Anyways, just sayin'
*Verizon's current hoohah with the SuperETF notwithstanding
Ugh, still no confirmation if it can do 720p video recording like the Bravo.
waah .. my Magic looks junk to this baby
please give us a CDMA version
I love my G1 and T-Mobile finally activated 3G throughout most of St. Louis yesterday. I get about five pretty much anywhere as long as I'm not inside a Wal-Mart or something. I don't think I could go with anything but an Android phone from now on. Hopefully the Nexus One sans contract is affordable enough since I won't be eligible for an upgrade until 2011.
WHERE IS FM radio??? I do not see it in the specs!!! Again 5 cent economy or just weird marketing?
RAM: 512MB
facepalm*
Over at that paragon of journalistic integrity, Engadget, they’re reporting the specs of the completely non-existent Google Phone, AKA “Nexus One,” AKA “Google’s PR Department is wasted off their ass.” What I find most interesting about this whole charade is that someone actually took the time to fake a full set of specs. Click the link above for pictures of the whole list, but the “highlights” as reported by Engadget are here:
Android 2.1
11.5 mm thick
512MB RAM, 512 MB ROM, 4GB microSD in-box blah blah blah
FAST OH MY GOD SO FAST I WANT TO TOUCH MYSELF
3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display
So if it were real, it would be a nice phone. But so what? Is this news? You could just go to the damn HTC site and get those specs, since it’s just a damn HTC Passion. Amateurs.
The weirdest part of this story is a throwaway comment that somehow made it into the headline for the post, that Google would start selling their phones on January 5th as invite-only. Like they did when they launched Gmail and Wave and a lot of their other products.
Are you drunk, Google? Shut up. This is a stupid idea. In the world of actual business where you’re trying to get people to spend actual real money on a real physical product, you want to remove as many barriers to entry as you possibly can. One what you could do this is by letting anyone with the money to buy your idiot phone to actually, you know, buy the thing.
Anyway, it’s probably all moot. Aside from the fact that it sounds like some lame masturbatory rumor a fanboy came up with, because omfg wouldn’t it be great if google was so awsome they did invites on hardware like they do 4 software extreme to the maxxx so fantastic i just came, that’s the part of Engadget’s supposed scoop that doesn’t have even the pretence of attribution. What’s wrong, Engadget, couldn’t you get your crack team of photo manipulators to whip you up something that made it look like you didn’t pull the idea of an invite-only phone completely out of your ass?
Dear @AndroidDoesnt,
You're a moron.
Kind Regards,
Everyone.
I wouldnt buy ANY phone without a front camera, skype video for phones is around the corner!
x10 or nexus 1?
both have no front camera it seems :(
I'm sad, but I took the time to type out the full specs (the ones that were there) here:
http://www.nexusoneforum.net/forum/nexus-one-google-phone-news/63-nexus-one-invite-only-january-5th.html
And will the invitation be transferable?
http://www.NexusOneBlog.com
I hope that they determine the invites by picking people who use Google services the most.
Don't understand why they dont install atleast 1GB of Flash for storage. OR make it possible to install programs on that SD
Looking at the specs, it's definitely a nice phone to develop android apps on...
does this mean no NEXUS ONE for Verizon wireless??!?!? can i still buy it unlocked for Verizon? or do i have to go to the DROID??!?! please HELP
1111!!!
Sizing up the reported specs of the HTC Bravo with the Nexus One, it seems like the Bravo scores higher -
Where specs are not similar, the Nexus One scores with
512 MB RAM vs. 320 MB RAM
WiFi AGN vs. just WiFI AG
Noise cancellation mic
In comparison, the Bravo scores with
16GB out of the box memory card
WiFi based tethering
DivX and Dolby support
FM Radio
720p recording
Multi-touch
and above all the HTC Sense UI overlay
So, is all the hype about the Nexus One thanks only to the Google backing?
@gopals
So the Passion isn't the Bravo? The Passion is supposed to be the Nexus one, yeah? Sorry...a little laggy on mobile tech. I'm trying to confirm and compare the specs on the Bravo and all I'm seeing is that it's the Passion, but for release in Europe. Oh, and the Passion is supposed to be the Nexus One.
@gopals I will wait for Bravo instead Nexus according with that spec you've written.
And does either of the Bravo or the Nexus One have graphics acceleration?
Sorry, am I reading this correctly? Only 512 Flash memory? Yes 512 ram and 1 gz processor is nice, but only 512 of storage on board? C'mon, my N97 has 32g *and* can address a 16g card. Still tempted tho.... ;-)
@markzip
I think some people prefer memory cards, for bad case scenario purposes. For instance, if you need to factory reset your Nokia, you're losing what you store natively on the device, no? (I could be wrong, I don't own a N97). This means you'd have to copy off all the data someplace and then put it back when you were done (if it works that way).
I personally have a good 50 or so apps installed and I haven't quite maxed out my G1 yet. I can't even begin to imagine 512MB worth of storage....It'd be like my desktop OS, and tons of apps I don't ever use. When my phone gets a little slow, instead of uninstalling apps I don't use I prefer to factory reset it so I have a clean slate, and install my apps again which is no trouble. Then I leave out the ones I never used and don't want. All my music is safe on my micro sdhc card.
Anyway, until the Android phones become viable gaming devices I don't think they need more than 512-1GB RAM. When they get acceleration and can play PSP looking games, THEN I'd love to see a move to more storage, because we all know it's games that really eat up the storage in phones. That, and media.
Does anyone else see that it will be using wireless N along with the usual A, B and G specs? wouldn't this be a first in that area? Also I noticed that it says for the platform " Android 2.0 Ecliar; is this just the current version or will it be getting the bump to 2.1 Flan?
@Hodge20 It's probably the "new" Broadcom chip.
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9122858/Broadcom_launches_802.11n_chip_for_cell_phones
@user001 Yeah I remember reading about that. It's about time phone manufacturers made the jump to wireless N.
No keyboard. Fuck you Google.
Can anyone confirm that Rogers wireless in Canada runs on the 1700Mhz band?
rabble rabble rabble rabble
Buying HTC HD2 means having a beast which can handle both WinMo and Android (maybe dual boot). There will be an Android rom for HTC HD2 very soon, without a doubt.
It's a godphone......mmm.
hello. i was wondering if you guys have any opinions on what phone should i get. i wanted to get the HTC HD2. but now i dont know lol. im currently with sprint but i will leave for a phone that its worth it.
plus what about ATT's 3G being over crowded? is it worth it to gget a good phone with ATT if their network is being overused? or should i wait for T Mobile's 3G to improve?
@xelastik2002 Mmmm, the more recent test
http://gizmodo.com/5428343/our-2009-12+city-3g-data-mega-test-att-won?skyline=true&s=i
seem to point to that being more of an issue with the Iphone itself than the network. Basically, when they used a computer with the 3G modem rather than a phone, AT&T data network was the best (yes, that means better than Verizon). That says nothing about what the voice experience is like, but...just sayin.
@xelastik2002 Also..T-mobile network is definitely better...if by better you mean faster, where you can get it. It's up to 10 times faster than AT&T in real world use (I'm on AT&T, co-worker is on T-mobile, I got 500kbs, he got 5Mbs). Look at the coverage maps and see if who (AT&T or T-mobile) covers where you are and where you go most of the time.
I would love an invited - if really needed!!!
How are the rumors shaping up about delivery in Europe - Germany??
so what the hell happened!? i thought that this phone was going to be usable on ALL networks, a version for each network...if its only usable by t-mobile networks then its still an exclusive phone no matter if there is a contract involved or not
really disappointed, I really want this phone, but I guess I'm stuck with my old 3G, though I guess I could jump ship, would have to check the coverage though....
This phone has as much RAM as my computer. Fuck.
@Hiro This phone is a computer.
At this point, the January 5 launch date seems to be for the developer version of the phone (hence the invite-only sale) with the t mobile version following sometime down the road.
If you want this phone early, spend $25 to register yourself as android developer to increase your chance of receiving an invite.
The G1 was a disappointment, N1 seems to be a true flagship phone, something t-mobile is desperately in need of.
So, it is supposedly coming out on Jan. 5th, 2KX as developer's phone...
But it is also supposedly coming out with T-mobile???
I gotta get this phone if it is coming out in T-mobile...
or HTC Bravo, or HD2, or Xperia X10, or SE Nanami,...
well, Nexus One, feature-wise, falls in between.
Sorry, but, in reality, they ALL SUCK!!
Samsung i8910 HD got the best of both worlds, aka 3.7 inch AMOLED 16 million color display of HTC Bravo, yet 8MP camera from Xperia X10, HD 720p recording from HTC Bravo (well, actually it’s more the other way around lol, but that’s not the point), 1500mAh battery from X10, FM radio from HTC Bravo, and triband UMTS (1900Mhz frequency for US) from X10.
Plus add to that 5.1 surround sound via speakers, and 16GB internal memory.
Oh, yeah, I forgot this Samsung device has been out for over 6 MONTHS – sometimes I wonder how can other companies be SO SLOW!!
Yeah, it does run on this pathetic Symbian 5th (but thats cause it takes the BEST advantage of the hardware, well, did in 2009 at least) But it’s getting kinetic scrolling, multi-touch, new browser, revamped UI via update next month!
May I suggest that this best phone of 2009 will remain best of 2010?
PLEASE, don’t rank me down, (or hate me) – just trying to be helpful
Cya ^.^
@MiXy I've fondled this phone multiple times at the Samsung Experience in NY, and I'm in agreement with you on most points. My current phone run s60, so even that didn't really put me off. Only problem is that AT&T is transition 1900MHz to be EDGE only. Their 3.5G (HSDPA) is going to be (in some places already is) on 850MHz. If only Samsung had release a US version, I would have bought one by now.
